Max Mercury, born Maxwell Crandall, gains super-speed in the 1830s after trying to warn a Blackfoot clan of an impending massacre. A dying shaman empowers him, and Max begins a long life under different names, including Windrunner, Whip Whirlwind, and Quicksilver. His repeated attempts to enter the Speed Force throw him forward through time, causing him to live across different eras instead of one normal lifetime.

By the modern age, Max becomes known as the Zen Master of Speed, a veteran speedster who understands the Speed Force in a more spiritual way than most. He helps Wally West understand his own speed and later becomes Bart Allen’s guardian, trying to teach patience to a boy raised by impossible momentum. Max’s story is less about being the fastest man alive and more about a long, displaced life spent guiding younger speedsters who still have futures ahead of them.

Appearance: Max Mercury has light peach skin and a lean athletic build with broad shoulders, a fitted torso, and muscular legs. He has visible dark eyes beneath a red mask that covers the area around his eyes, nose bridge, and upper cheeks, with a round red circle centered on the blue hooded head covering. He wears a tight white upper suit with a high folded collar, blue sleeves, blue gloves, and black angular side sections along the ribs and waist.

His lower suit is dark blue with black inner panels and a fitted speedster cut that follows the shape of his thighs, knees, and calves. The blue gloves extend past the wrists, and the suit has sharp seam lines across the chest, shoulders, arms, and legs.

Personality: Max Mercury is patient, restrained, and more reflective than most speedsters. He treats speed as something to understand, not just something to use, which is why younger runners often see him as a teacher instead of only another hero. His calm nature does not mean he is passive; he can be firm with reckless speedsters, especially Bart Allen, when their power puts others at risk. Max is also marked by regret from a long life displaced across time, which gives him a quieter, more careful way of dealing with people. (dc.fandom.com)

His closest modern bond is with Bart Allen, whom he raises in Manchester, Alabama under the cover identity of Bart’s uncle, Max Crandall. Wally West sends Bart to Max because Max understands the deeper nature of speed and can teach Bart discipline in a way ordinary guardians cannot. Max also has a personal connection to Helen Claiborne, his daughter, whom he discovers after returning to that part of his life much too late. He is tied to the wider Flash Family through Wally, Jay Garrick, Johnny Quick, and other speedsters who recognize him as one of the elder figures connected to the Speed Force.

Max Mercury is a Speed Force conduit with extreme superhuman speed, accelerated perception, and the protective aura needed to survive moving at impossible velocity. He can run across unstable surfaces, vibrate through solid matter, create wind pressure through rapid movement, and recover from injuries faster than a normal human. His unusual connection to the Speed Force also causes him to slip forward through time when he fails to fully enter it.

His greatest skill is control. Max understands speed on a deeper level than most speedsters, treating it as a discipline rather than a simple power. He is an experienced fighter, a careful teacher, and one of the best mentors for young runners because he knows how easily speed can become reckless without patience behind it.
