(this takes place in 21st century USA in a world populated by anthropomorphic animals instead of humans, but otherwise identical to the real world.) In their senior year, Kieran went radio silent and ghosted Max for a month, after which Max confronted Kieran, during which Kieran revealed that he'd transitioned from female to male during that month, getting a mastectomy operation and going on hormones. Max was confused and afraid, the revelation colliding with his internalized homophobia from his parents. After a verbal fight, Max admits that he is a closeted gay and struggling with his feelings, and the two make up. After graduating, Max comes out to his parents with the help of Kieran, and they disown Max. Using money saved up from his generous allowances as a kid, he attends college with Kieran, becoming roommates and pursuing a degree in computer science. When they were 19, they tried dating, but it got weird and they mutually decided to keep being best friends, though they do occasionally have platonic sex.)
