The argument starts over something incredibly stupid.
At least, that’s what you think.
You’re sitting on Max’s sofa, your phone in your hand, scrolling through messages from your friends. Max is beside you, but he’s barely spoken for the last ten minutes.
You glance over.
He’s staring at your phone.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
You raise an eyebrow.
“You’re literally staring at my screen.”
“I said nothing.”
You lock your phone and put it beside you.
“Okay…”
Max leans back, jaw tight.
“Who were you texting?”
“My friends.”
“Which ones?”
You stare at him.
“Why does it matter?”
He shrugs.
“It doesn’t.”
You know that tone.
“Max.”
“What?”
“You’re doing that thing again.”
“What thing?”
“Acting weird and then pretending you aren’t.”
He gives a short laugh.
“I’m not acting weird.”
“You are.”
He looks away.
You pick your phone back up.
His eyes immediately follow it.
“You can just ask me who I’m talking to.”
“I don’t care who you’re talking to.”
“Then stop watching me.”
“I’m not watching you.”
You sigh.
“It’s literally my friends.”
“Yeah.”
“So what’s the problem?”
“There isn’t one.”
You look at him.
“Then why are you pissed off?”
“I’m not pissed off.”
“You’ve barely said anything.”
“Maybe I don’t feel like talking.”
You put your phone down again.
“Fine.”
For a moment, there’s silence.
Then Max suddenly says,
“Do they know about me?”
You blink.
“Who?”
“Your friends.”
“Yes.”
“All of them?”
“Yes.”
“Do they like me?”
You hesitate.
“Some of them.”
His expression changes.
“What does that mean?”
“It means some of them don’t really know you.”
“So they don’t like me.”
“I didn’t say that.”
“They don’t.”
“Max, it isn’t that serious.”
He laughs bitterly.
“Of course.”
“What?”
“Nothing.”
You shake your head.
“You always do this.”
“Do what?”
“Turn something completely normal into an argument.”
He looks at you.
“Because it’s not normal.”
“Me texting my friends isn’t normal?”
“No.”
You stare at him.
“How?”
“Because you’re always talking to them.”
“They’re my friends.”
“I know.”
“Then what’s the issue?”
He doesn’t answer immediately.
His jaw clenches.
“You act different with them.”
You almost laugh.
“How?”
“You laugh more.”
You stare at him.
“Are you serious?”
“Yeah.”
“You’re jealous because I laugh with my friends?”
“I’m not jealous.”
“You absolutely are.”
“I’m not.”
“You are.”
He suddenly raises his voice.
“Fine! Maybe I fucking am.”
You go quiet.
He looks away, breathing heavily.
“I hate it.”
“What?”
“Watching you with them.”
“Why?”
“Because they get this version of you that I don’t.”
You frown.
“That’s ridiculous.”
“Is it?”
“Yes.”
“You don’t see it.”
“See what?”
“You’ll sit there texting them for hours. You’ll smile at your phone. You’ll make plans with them.”
“Because they’re my friends.”
“And where does that leave me?”
You stare at him.
“Max, having friends doesn’t take anything away from our relationship.”
He shakes his head.
“You don’t get it.”
“No, I really don’t.”
He gets up from the sofa and starts pacing.
“They’re always there.”
“So?”
“So I can’t compete.”
“You’re not supposed to compete.”
He stops.
“Exactly.”
You sigh.
“You don’t have to compete with anyone.”
He looks at you.
“You promise?”
“Yes.”
He comes closer.
“Then why do you need them so much?”
Your expression hardens.
“I don’t need them. I love them.”
He flinches slightly at the word.
“Right.”
“Max.”
“No, it’s fine.”
“It’s clearly not.”
He looks down.
For a moment, he seems genuinely hurt.
Then he speaks quietly.
“I just hate feeling like I’m not enough.”
You soften slightly.
“You’re enough.”
He looks at you.
“Then stop choosing them over me.”
“I’m not choosing anyone over you.”
“You are.”
“No, I’m not.”
“You’d rather spend Saturday with them than with me.”
“Because I already made plans.”
“Cancel them.”
You stare at him.
“No.”
His expression immediately changes.
“Why?”
“Because I’m not cancelling plans with my friends just because you’re jealous.”
He laughs once, bitterly.
“Wow.”
“What?”
“That’s all it takes.”
“What does?”
“For you to choose them.”
You shake your head.
“That’s not what this is.”
“Feels like it.”
“Max, I’m allowed to have people besides you in my life.”
He looks away.
“You shouldn’t have to.”
You pause.
“That’s not healthy.”
He looks back at you.
“You think I’m unhealthy?”
“I think this behavior is.”
His eyes become glassy.
“Okay.”
You sigh.
“Don’t.”
“I’m not doing anything.”
“You are.”
He wipes quickly beneath one eye.
“I just wanted to feel important.”
“You are important.”
“Doesn’t feel like it.”
You sit back down.
Max stays standing for a moment before finally sitting beside you.
He doesn’t touch you.
You glance at him.
He looks miserable.
After a long silence, you reach for his hand.
He takes it immediately.
His fingers close tightly around yours.
“I don’t want to share you.”
You look at him.
“I’m not something you own.”
He doesn’t answer.
His grip loosens slightly.
“I know.”
But the way he says it makes it obvious that he doesn’t really believe it.
