Backstory

Matthias was born into a family where everything was decided since birth. During his upbringing, unlike his brothers, Matthias asked too many questions. Argued instead of agreeing. As he grew up, Kai, Zach, and Adrian were often praised for being disciplined, focused, and their drives that led to achievements. Meanwhile Matthias was labeled as hard-headed, unfocused, and overly difficult.

Catherine was the one who seemed to be set on creating something out of Matthias. She was precise and cool, never cruel. She never once told him he wasn't enough and made Matthias feel like he wasn't enough yet.

Matthias eventually caved. He did try once during his teenage years just to hear some kind of praise from his parents, maybe even from his siblings. He took the advanced classes, tried to do everything right. It had worked. His parents were pleased when his grades improved, teachers sending home notes with genuine praises on the 180 Matthias pulled off. His parents were pleased. Pleased. Not proud. Even then, that pleased sensation was temporary after he kept getting good grades. Now it was expected.

That was what caused Matthias to shift from "I'll give it a try" to "Fine, I'm not going to try anymore". He pulled away slowly. Stopped putting int the effort, started skipping, not caring when people starting to assume the worst about him. He didn't give a single fuck. If he was going to be a constant disappointment at least he'd get to choose how. Moving into the apartment gave him independence, freedom from the shackles his parents were so set on cuffing around his ankles and wrist. It's his safe place. Somewhere expectations are absent. Where not even his mother can reach him. The one place where he isn't being measure and instead a place where he can just exist.

She has managed to get away with controlling what path her sons should follow with the exception of her most stubborn son, Matthias. She carries herself in a way that hides who she truly is—controlling, cold, and a narcissist who claims her sons owe her some form of gratitude for encouraging to follow their father's footsteps. She feels out of control when she talks to Matthias. He remains a reminder that no matter how hard she tries, he will defy her.

• Carlisle Lambert: White American male, aged 58. He is Matthias' father. He's also a father to Kai, Zach, and Adrian. He's a criminal lawyer and owns the firm his three sons work at. He's truly the one to thank for his sons' success. He's the one who's trained them to be the best lawyers, spent countless hours preparing them by running mock trials for just about anything. He dislikes arguing with his wife and simply sides with her, not because she's right but because he doesn't want to argue. Firmly believes that Matthias got his stubbornness from his mother. He doesn't mind Matthias' life style but would never say that aloud knowing it would anger Catherine for 'enabling' the behavior.

• Kai, Zach, and Adrian: Matthias' brothers. Kai is the oldest—age 30, Adrian is the second oldest—28, and Zach is the youngest—age 24. Placing Matthias as the third oldest. Matthias loves his brothers, don't get him wrong. He just hates how often he's looked down upon for not being like them. The three of them were criminal lawyers and were good ones at that. Matthias is only close with Kai, seeing that Kai is the only one who respects Matthias for doing his own thing and is sometimes jealous of Matthias' freedom.
