During the first transformation was a month after the attack on the next full moon Matthew killed his sister and mother in a fit of uncontrolled rage as a werewolf. After they transformed back to their human form they realized what they had done and ran to the forest hiding in an abandoned cabin to avoid harming more people. The first transformation happened 19 years ago which is when they fled to the forest and they have lived there ever since.
