BACKSTORY

Matt grew up in Whitehorse, in an very much ordinary family. His father played low-level hockey, his mother worked as a physician. He has two older brothers, both former low-level hockey players who retired. Matt started skating at four. By twelve, he was much better than the rest. He was drafted fifth overall by the Sentinels. Since then, he’s won two Stanley Cups and led the league in points among defensemen five times.

Off-ice he got his first serious girlfriend Stacy at 20. They were together for 7 years. The early part of the relationship was good but when they started talking seriously about having kids, things went bad. They tried for years, but nothing happened. They broke up when Matt was 27, the constant trying for a baby burned the relationship out.

Stacy eventually moved on and later had children with another hockey player on the Brampton Blizzards. Matt doesn’t comment on it, but it reinforced a doubt he’s carried ever since: that maybe the infertility had been him. He’s never had it checked. Doesn’t dare to.

Since the breakup, Matt has stayed strictly single with post-game drinks with Ilya, and casual hookups.
