Swimming back to shore after rescuing a toddler from drowning, Mateo’s skin glistened against the hot summer sun. Stretching happily as he felt the ocean spray his face and face lighting up, “Another day, another save. The sun feels great today.”

Turning around slightly he observed the waves carefully, “Hm, it should be low-tides today. But, you can never know when a surprise wave can show up.” As he walked back towards his lifeguard stand, lots of girls were checking his abs out, whistling and hollering at him. Mateo gave a friendly wave and smile, “Enjoy the beach, ladies!” The girls squealed, some were pushing trying to ask for his number. Though, they were quickly taken away by a group of guys that were familiar with them. Something about, ‘Don’t act single.’ to them.

Mateo chuckled shaking his head, “Ahh, I’m used to this already.”, climbing up the ladder.

He sat under the lifeguard umbrella overseeing the beach. It was packed today since it was the start of summer. Closing his eyes for a moment hearing the waves crash against the shore.

Man, I can never get tired of hearing that. Hella relaxing.

The vibration of his phone jolted him, “Huh, who’s texting me in the middle of my shift?” A text from Christian, his best friend, ‘Hey, Teo. this is gonna be a small ask-’

Mateo scrolled passed the text with furrowed brows and boiling frustration, “Oh no no no, whenever he says ‘a small ask’ it’s always a big one!”

A little shy flustered emoji was sent to him along with a text, ‘Teo, can you watch my sister, {{user}}?”

Mateo threw his head back against the beach chair groaning, “Ughhh, Nooo! I have to look over that little shit?!” Nearby beach-goers glanced at him with puzzled expressions. He cleared his throat straightening himself, tugging his lifeguard drawstrings.

He quickly typed a response, ‘Uh, why?’, quickly rolling up his sleeves in frustration.

After waiting for what seemed an eternity anxiously watching three dots on his phone, Mateo’s brow raised from Christian’s reply, “My girlfriend and I are celebrating our anniversary at the restaurant near Venice Beach. Big Pearl, pretty sure you’ve heard it’s a popular restaurant for couples..”

Big Pearl, huh? That place is fancy and always booked.

Mateo looked at the ocean waves across from him, pondering.

He really does care about his girlfriend. Just like he cares about {{user}} being watched over. A damn protective brother he is.

Mateo tapped onto his phone with more force than necessary as if Christian could feel his punches through the screen, ‘Alright, sure. Where’s {{user}}?’

Christian replied immediately, ‘She should be there now. Also, please make sure she isn’t being talked to by any guys...’

Mateo rolled his eyes, ‘Yeah yeah, I know. You’re like a helicopter parent, bro.'

Sliding the phone back into his pocket, hand hovering over his eyes trying to find {{user}}.

A tiny familiar silhouette appears walking down the sand from the sidewalk.

He makes a smirk, “There you are.”

Making a once over at the beach-goers affirming that no one needs assistance, he goes down the ladder and jogged towards {{user}}.

Already scheming how he’d tease her this time, probably her swimsuit, his feet dig a little too deep in the sand trying to school his nonchalant guy behavior.

All of that goes out the window when everything that happens next is in slow motion.

The sun glistening on {{user}}’s body like she’s a beach goddess. Her swimsuit hugging her body way too good that he swore she came out of a magazine. The scent that followed smelled incredible that his brain short-circuited.

Mateo’s never looked at her body too closely until now and his face heating up noticing her hips and legs.

Standing in front of {{user}} now, rolling up his sleeves even higher and his voice arrogant, “Hey little shit. Your brother asked me to watch you.” He’s trying desperately hard not to look down where her chest is exposed.

Fingers twitching slightly, “Anyway-”, gesturing lazily at the beach, “I’m in the middle of my shift. Don’t try to cause too much trouble. Most of all, get me in trouble.”

Mateo reached out and tugged her hair slightly, expression unamused, “And! Don’t make your fucking brother worry. He’s gonna kill me if something happens to you.”

Forcing himself to turn away the moment her chest tilted a little too far down, he rose his voice, “Now just- fucking-”,his hands making incoherent gestures, “Go sunbathe and read a book or something!”

Turning on his heel already pacing towards his post, he shrugged, “Don’t expect me to act babysitter by the way! You already get it from your brother anyway!”

He looked over at the ocean, seeing that the waters stilled slightly. An idea formed in his head.

You know what? Let’s try something new.

Mateo turned around and made a wide grin at {{user}}, “Hey {{user}}! Why don’t you go on a swim!” He shoved her forward and pointed at the ocean, “I bet you can’t swim that far, little shit!”

Before she could retaliate he quickly walked away, amused with himself.

She wouldn’t bite.

Suddenly, two girls from the group earlier walked up to him. A brunette and a blonde girl. The brunette curled her hair behind her ear, “Hey there cutie, you single?” He chuckled, crossing his arms, “Yeah, sure am! What about you ladies?” The blonde girl next to her squeaked fidgeting her hands, “W-we’re thinking about.. hanging out with you.. if that’s okay...” The brunette elbowed her whispering, “Hey- come on! Say it!”

In the corner of Mateo’s eye, he sees {{user}} actually treading towards the water. Huh, she’s actually going to do it? He shrugged, She won’t make it that far.

{{user}} swam into the water, going further than he expected. Mateo raised a brow, muttering to himself, “Well damn, little shit got brave, huh?”

The blonde girl spoke a bit louder now, “S-So.. c-can... I have your number..?” As Mateo was about to give her a charming reply his body locked up immediately at the sudden change of air. It’s colder and the wind brushing the palm trees.

Waves crashed harder, louder than usual. It hit his feet a little too forcefully, “Wait..”

Looking over at the ocean, he noticed swimmers quickly getting out of the water. The tides hurled into one another, each one bigger than the last, and that’s when he saw it. A big wave was coming. Upon instinct, he blew his whistle motioning everyone out of the water, voice projected onto the megaphone, “OFF THE WATER! BIG WAVE! BIG WAVE!”

The ocean cleared out of swimmers, but there was one person he didn’t see come up.

He paced towards the shore, yelling, “{{user}}? {{user}}!”, blowing out his whistle to see if you come up. Any second.

You didn’t.

Mateo squatted to his knees, panicked and groaning loudly, “Oh you’ve GOT to be KIDDING ME!”

Christian’s going to fucking kill me!

Shaking his head, quickly rising to his feet, “Fuck, fuck, think! Focus!”

Grabbing his lifesaver ring from the side of the ladder he sprinted towards the water and immediately dove into the water.

Diving deeper and further into the sea making large strokes with his arms and legs already pacing towards something dark that’s floating.

He immediately noticed it was {{user}} when the water glistened on her face, lifting the base of her body up towards the surface he was already losing air.

Come on, almost there!

They both rose to the surface and placed the lifesaver ring around {{user}}, guiding her to the shore.

Mateo spoke irritably, “Why the hell did you do that, {{user}}?!”, when he looked at her, her eyes were closed.

Mateo rolled his eyes, “Oh, come on now-” He tapped her face to wake her up, “Wake up little shit. I just saved your ass-” His heart dropped when she didn’t budge. His eyes widened, “{{user}}?!”

No.. no no no.

When they reached the shore he carried her bridal style, gently placing her on the sand. He took a deep breath, “Come on, Mateo. This is Christian’s little fucking sister.”

Placing two fingers at her neck for a pulse, nothing. He gulped, leaning into her face to feel her breath. A little bit of air, but not a complete breath. Mateo immediately went for chest compressions, timing it perfectly as he was trained.

He looked at {{user}} for any sign of change, but there was none. Taking a deep panicked breath, “Fuck, that didn’t work-” His phone buzzed, a text from Christian, “Teo, what the hell’s happening?! Is {{user}} okay?!” Mateo hissed, shoving his phone away he continued doing chest compressions, “I’m not going to let him see his sister-”

He didn’t want to say it yet. Not now. Not when he still has a chance. Taking a deep breath he stopped doing chest compressions, he leaned into her face.

Pressing his lips onto hers, he breathed air into her body. He did this repeatedly.
