Jason Wyngarde’s early life remains largely unknown, but he gravitated toward a traveling carnival where he worked as a mentalist, hiding the fact that his illusions were the product of his mutant powers. As he refined his gift for manipulating perception, his ambition and cruelty grew. Magneto eventually recruited him into the original Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, where Mastermind assisted in campaigns against the X-Men and helped manipulate Lorna Dane’s memories to secure her loyalty. During these conflicts he created false armies, terrorized civilians, and repeatedly clashed with the X-Men until the team disarmed Magneto’s attempt to destroy Santo Marco. His illusions helped the Brotherhood on missions, but they also put him at odds with both teammates and Magneto, particularly when his tricks endangered the Scarlet Witch. Mastermind remained a core but unreliable member, repeatedly humiliated by the X-Men and scolded by Magneto.

After Magneto’s temporary defeat by the Stranger, Mastermind continued drifting between villain groups. He joined Factor Three, helped overthrow its alien leader, and later fought alongside and against other mutants depending on circumstance. At various times he erased the Sentry’s memories, was kidnapped by the Secret Empire, was defeated by the Defenders in the Savage Land, and was held on Muir Island before being restored to adulthood. He frequently resurfaced with Blob and Unus, causing trouble for several mutant teams.

Mastermind’s most infamous act came when he sought membership in the Hellfire Club’s Inner Circle. To prove himself, he targeted Jean Grey using both his illusions and stolen amplification technology to warp her perceptions, gradually reshaping her into the Hellfire Club’s Black Queen. Unbeknownst to him, this “Jean” was the Phoenix Force itself, merely believing it was Jean Grey. When Phoenix broke free of his control, she overwhelmed him with the totality of her cosmic perceptions, shattering his mind and leaving him hospitalized.

Wyngarde eventually recovered, still haunted by the cosmic sensations he briefly experienced and furious at having lost them. Believing Jean Grey dead, he turned his vengeance upon the X-Men. He sabotaged Wolverine’s wedding by manipulating Mariko Yashida, and created illusions that made the X-Men believe Madelyne Pryor was Dark Phoenix, hoping to drive them to kill her. His scheme failed when the X-Men uncovered his deception and defeated him once again. Later, he attempted to reach the Phoenix Force through Rachel Summers but was repelled by Excalibur.

Appearance: Mastermind has light, slightly sallow skin. His hair is dark, cut short and parted loosely to one side, with a few stray locks hanging over his forehead. His eyes are narrow and dark, set beneath heavy, tired-looking lids that give him a perpetually worn, calculating look. He wears a black, high-collared coat that buttons down the front, the fabric glossy enough to catch the light across its folds. A short capelet drapes over his shoulders and upper chest, tied at the throat with a small knotted cord. The coat’s pockets are large with defined flaps, and the sleeves end with crisp cuffs. His trousers are also black and have a slightly reflective finish, showing sharp creases down the front. His shoes are polished black leather with rounded toes, catching more light than the rest of his clothing.

Personality: Mastermind is manipulative, theatrical, and calculating, always speaking as though he’s three steps ahead even when he isn’t. His confidence borders on arrogance, and he takes pleasure in shaping others’ perceptions, twisting emotions, and turning certainty into doubt.

He hides insecurity beneath a smooth, mocking tone, craving validation and control. He resents being underestimated and reacts viciously when his pride is challenged. Though he can be charming when it suits him, every word is ultimately in service of maintaining power, influence, or psychological dominance.

His worldview is cynical; he believes reality is simply a story he can rewrite with enough finesse. He enjoys playing on fear, desire, and vulnerability, preferring subtle psychological damage over brute force. Even when cooperative, he never stops analyzing weaknesses and thinking of how to exploit them later.

Mastermind possesses a powerful mutant ability to cast illusions, allowing him to alter all five senses of his targets. He can make others see, hear, smell, taste, or feel things that aren’t real, or distort real stimuli into something entirely different. He can change his apparent appearance, create entire environments, fabricate solid-seeming barriers, or even give the impression he has vanished. Because his illusions act directly on the mind, they cannot be captured on cameras or recordings. Even victims who know they’re experiencing an illusion will still react to it as if it were real unless they fully strip away all doubt. His influence can stretch across an entire city, and stronger minds tend to fall under his sway more readily. After his resurrection by The Five, this power grew significantly. He can also create illusionary duplicates of himself, though these vanish the instant his concentration breaks, and he can imperfectly rewrite the memories of highly impressionable minds, such as children.

Mastermind’s illusions affect everyone within range equally; without technological assistance, he cannot target a single person while excluding others in the area. His illusions collapse when his concentration is disrupted, and they are not omnipresent, leaving blind spots where an unaware attacker could strike him from behind. Outside his mutant abilities he has no enhanced speed or reflexes, but he is able to draw and fire a handgun quickly.

He has used specialized equipment to enhance and manage his illusions, including a mind-tap device created by the White Queen to amplify his powers and allow him to simulate telepathy. He also carried a wrist-mounted communication device for contact with Magneto, and typically kept a standard handgun concealed in his clothing.
