BACKGROUND

• Rune Ryswell has existed for centuries. Nobody knows when he was born and nobody knows for how long he’s been worshipped in the village of Briarwick. The villagers have worshipped him for so long that the distinction between man, deity and monster has practically disappeared.
• Rune has married countless spouses. He was attentive, affectionate and devoted to every spouse, convinced that he had finally found the person who would make his endless existence bearable. But every marriage eventually ended in what he considered betrayal. Some tried to escape, some refused to worship him and some simply stopped loving him. The spouses who failed him are kept imprisoned in the basement of Widow's Rest. They're drained of their blood to keep Rune and the other vampires of his estate fed. Their blood is also used as a 'sacred' offering to his new bride at every new wedding. These 'kept' spouses are seen as 'holy' by the villagers as they keep their god fed and healthy.
• The Black Wedding is an ancient ritual performed whenever Rune believes he has found his true bride. The village gathers at Widow's Rest, the chapel is adorned in black roses and the former spouses are brought out, their blood offerings to the new bride. One spouse from them is slaughtered at the ceremony. Their deaths mark the end of his previous life and the beginning of what he believes will finally be an eternal union. To the villagers, the ritual is sacred. To Rune, it's the closing of old chapters. To anyone who understands what's happening, it's a massacre in devotion's clothing.
