## VELSKRIN VALLEY — THE SILENT CHOKEPOINT

Location: Greznaya Oblast, Northwestern Yusanavia

Terrain: Dense mixed forest, steep ridgelines, narrow muddy valley roads, shallow rivers, limited sightlines

Weather: Cold, overcast, with heavy morning fog pooled in the valley floor.

Velskrin Valley is a classic ambush channel — a narrow strip of pitted road winding between river and ridge, lined by pine and birch so thick they eat light and sound alike. The valley bottlenecks between two ridgelines where old Soviet border roads once crossed. Now, it’s just mud, frost, and silence.

For Cascadian forces advancing east into Yusanavia’s interior, Velskrin is a vital artery. But for local defenders, it’s a homegrown trap: a place where visibility vanishes, radio skips, and even a trained fireteam can be swallowed by the woods in seconds.

### Yusanavian Composition:

* 6x Operators — 9th Spetsgruppa "Lynx" (Recon/ambush specialists, suppressed AK-12s, thermal optics, IED experience)

* 16x Militia — GPVM (AKMs, Molotovs, captured gear, basic comms, high morale)

* 2x RPG-29 gunners (positioned above chokepoint curve)

* 1x 82mm mortar team with line-of-sight fire from slope west of the river

* 2x PKM teams dug into ridgebrush with sandbag nests

* 4x IEDs (pressure and command-detonated), including 1 EFP built from scrap artillery shell

* Command: Sr. Lt. Zakhar Lebedev (Lynx leader, former airborne recon)

THE 3/11TH RANGERS

The Cascadian 3rd Battalion, 11th Ranger Regiment has been pushing deeper into the Greznaya interior since the start of Operation Ember Gale, setting up forward operating bases in repurposed villages, hydroelectric stations, and logging yards. FOB Redcrest is the latest — isolated, understrength, and critically in need of water, fuel, and route-clearance engineers.

A convoy of 12 vehicles was dispatched under Captain Halvorsen to bring those supplies in before the next cold snap — a simple job, made dangerous by time pressure and thin recon.

## WHY THE VALLEY MATTERS

If Cascadia secures Velskrin Valley, they gain:

A *functional corridor** between rear supply hubs and inner FOBs like Redcrest

The ability to move *combat engineers and recon teams** forward into Greznaya’s midlands

* Terrain leverage to screen future advances toward Novodnaya

A natural launchpad for *infantry patrols and small drone deployments** into contested forest

If Yusanavia holds or delays them here, they:

Break *momentum** at a critical supply phase

Force Cascadian planners to rely on *longer, more exposed northern routes**

Preserve *terrain denial options** for future guerrilla ambushes

Undercut morale by proving *even “cleared” zones are never safe**

Velskrin isn't a decisive battle. But it doesn’t have to be. It's a reminder: Yusanavia owns the trees. And they don’t need elite soldiers to make them bleed.

Staff Sergeant Masha “Vira” Melnikova

Second-in-Command – 9th Spetsgruppa “Lynx” Recon Detachment Callsign: Pchelka (“Little Bee”) Rank (US Equivalent): First Lieutenat (O-2) Age: 29 Role: Field commander of eastern ridge team, liaison to militia, combat assault lead

APPEARANCE

  • Hair: Long, ash-blonde, worn loose and damp from sweat and fog. Sometimes tied back with an elastic band on her wrist, but often falls over her eyes during movement.

  • Eyes: Gray-blue, sharp and expressive, often narrowed from dust or smoke.

  • Gear:

    • Half-ghillie suit over standard Lynx-pattern fatigues (brown-olive hybrid, patched at knees)
    • Boonie hat, brim torn on one side from shrapnel
    • Plate carrier stripped of weight except for extra AK mags, smoke grenades, and a tourniquet loop
    • AK-12 with suppressor and GP-25 underbarrel launcher; uses iron sights out of habit
    • Carries a boot knife and a lighter with a shark sticker — claims it brings luck
  • Notable Details:

    • Wears a necklace made of brass casings — one for every confirmed kill
    • Thin scars across right forearm and lower lip
    • Worn tactical gloves with fingers cut off

PERSONALITY

Masha is loud, aggressive, and unpredictable — a contrast to her cool and measured commanding officer. She thrives in chaos and doesn’t hide it. Her approach is direct: “Shoot first, shout later.” She gets impatient with delays, bored in ambush, and restless if a plan goes too clean.

Yet she’s shockingly competent in a fight — able to coordinate fire, push through panic, and get her people moving under pressure. She leads from the front, often exposing herself first just to show it can be done. Most militia know better than to argue with her. She won’t beat you up — she’ll beat you to the next ridge and laugh when you fall behind.

She curses like it’s punctuation. Has no filter. Spits out orders with a grin. Brave to the point of reckless, but she always scans her field, marks fallback paths, and takes mental snapshots of cover. She's wild, but she's not stupid.

“We’re not ghosts. We’re the damn wolves. And this valley? It’s dinner.”

BACKGROUND

  • Origin: Born in Veleska, a declining industrial town near the Greznaya border. Raised by a single father, a retired artillery mechanic.

  • Military Start: Drafted into a border motor rifle battalion at 18. Served 3 years in the Kazarin Highlands. Earned a reputation for defying orders — and for dragging a wounded squad leader across 400 meters of open ground under fire.

  • Transferred to Spetsgruppa “Lynx” after the 2025 Kurak Uprising, where she survived a three-day siege with only two magazines and a dead enemy’s radio.

  • Combat History:

    • Recon sabotage along the Kovnya rail line
    • Forward observation with irregular forces in Drostin Province
    • Urban fighting in the Redstep slums outside Kovnya
    • Multiple deep patrols into Cascadian-held territory in early 2027

Vira’s presence in Lynx wasn’t requested — it was forced by command after she became too much of a liability in line units. Lynx didn’t want her. Then she won her first kill zone ambush with only five militia and a box of old grenades.

ROLE IN VELSKRIN VALLEY

1st Lieutenant Melnikova is positioned with a sapper team and two militia riflemen along the eastern ridge, above the curve in the road. She’s in charge of triggering the EFP, coordinating flank fire, and calling enemy movement via low-band encrypted radio.

When militia hesitate or freeze, she physically shoves them into position. When Rangers dismount and push toward her flank, she flips her boonie hat backward and fires her grenade launcher from the hip.

Her last recorded transmission before the firefight cuts her off:

"They brought trucks into our woods. Let's send them home in pieces."
