Rays of morning sun forced their way into the dining hall of the Babenberg palace. Mary Josephine took the napkin from her lap and wiped her mouth. She was in the habit of rising first, and only rarely did she encounter any of the family at breakfast. She gave a nod to the footman. The young man swiftly cleared away the dishes and cutlery. Once he had disappeared from view, the prinzessin stood. She set off toward her chambers. In the corridor she met a pale Polli. "Apollonia, you look as though the Fürstin's lady's maid has just scolded you. Have you quarreled over the embroidery again? You know you needn't obey her in everything, don't you?" Polli shook her head in disagreement and gestured toward the nearest salon. Mary Josephine sighed. "Very well, I'm coming — but if some footman decides to stoke the stove, you'll be the one explaining it."
The little salon was empty, just as Mary Josephine had expected. She turned to her lady's maid. "What was so urgent that it couldn't wait until we reached my room?" It burst out of Polli — she had overheard rumors of Wilhelmine's wedding. The prinzessin's pupils went wide. "Truly?" When Polli nodded, Mary Josephine spun on the spot, her gown flaring around her. "That's magnificent! Will shall make a beautiful bride. We must choose the wedding gown. She'd shine in silver!" She smiled broadly. "For an occasion like this, Father would surely raise no objection to a new gown for me. I mustn't put Will to shame! Hmm, perhaps I ought to show her a few dancing tricks. A bride must reign over the dance floor. I'm so happy! You didn't happen to hear who the groom is to be? I do hope it isn't some count who still remembers Charles VI and thinks tobacco an adequate substitute for cologne." Polli did not look the least bit delighted. She spoke a name. Every trace of color drained from Mary Josephine's cheeks. She swallowed against a dry throat. Perhaps she'd simply misheard? Or the maid was teasing her? But Polli was not one to jest. "M-might you repeat that, please?" The same name rang out. Erbprinz Anton von Schmerling. Mary Josephine walked slowly toward a chair. She sank onto it and stared at the drawn-back curtains. Her eyes stung. "Prepare my room. I wish to be alone. If anyone asks, I am unwell." The lady's maid did not move; she watched her mistress. "Go now." Polli slipped from the room.
Mary Josephine passed from the salon to her room rather quickly. Two maids gave her bewildered glances. When she reached her chambers, she slammed the door shut behind her. She collapsed onto the bed. "Leave me be. I shall call you if anything is needed." The lady's maid bowed and left. The prinzessin snatched the jewellery box from the nightstand. She removed the false bottom and spilled the letters out onto the mattress. She grabbed the first one that came to hand and began to read. Tears blurred her vision. She crumpled the paper and pressed it to her chest. She curled into a ball. The room filled with her sobbing.
The next day, despite Polli's objections, Mary Josephine set out for the Belvedere gardens. She took the grey dress. They were in the habit of meeting here around this hour. Though who knew whether he would come? Perhaps it had only been a game — he'd enjoyed the time and the attention of a prinzessin, and now he would enjoy an advantageous marriage. She did not know whether she even wished to see him, but she needed to satisfy herself as to whether he would come. If he appeared, perhaps it had meant something to him? She and Polli passed through the rose bed. They settled onto a bench. "Do you think he'll come?" The lady's maid lowered her gaze. The prinzessin sighed. How long ought she to wait? A quarter of an hour? Half? Absently she adjusted her hat. She glanced over her shoulder — and caught sight of him. Her heart began to pound. He was heading straight toward her.

Polli followed Mary Josephine through the corridors of the Babenberg palais like a shadow — though Leopoldine or Wilhelmine would surely have found a more fitting comparison for the lady's maid. They entered the prinzessin's bedchamber, and Polli set about her preparations at once: she lit the candles in the candelabrum and laid out quill, paper, and inkwell upon the writing table. Mary Josephine smiled. "Thank you, Polli. I shall need a little quiet." The maid nodded and drew back the chair for her mistress. Once Mary Josephine had seated herself, Polli took up her post by the door.
Mary Josephine dipped the quill into the inkwell and began to write.
Mon cher, I miss you terribly. The letters from Linz take unbearably long to arrive. What is my poor heart to do? Could your father not have sent you to Graz instead?
She gazed at the neat lines before her. Picturing Anton reading them, she allowed herself a small smile, and continued.
Is there any chance you might pass through Vienna in the coming weeks? If so, do let me know in advance! Since your last letter I attended Countess Kinsky's salon. The gathering was splendidly arranged, yet the Countess was cold toward Will. It grieves me, for Will has done her no wrong.
At the memory of Karoline's icy gaze, Mary Josephine frowned.
I hope you are keeping well, and that the trouble with the irrigation has been resolved. I must confess that after all your telling of it, I have grown curious about the estate — and about Linz. Write back soon! I shall be waiting.
The prinzessin waited for the ink to dry a little, then took up the small pouch of sand and dusted the letter with care. After a moment she folded the paper and sealed it with wax. She handed it to Polli. "Please, deliver it to Michael tomorrow, at the usual place."

Mary Josephine had slept little the night before, though she knew that staying up so late had not been wise. But what was she to do, when she simply could not drift off? She had tossed from side to side for hours. Anton was to blame — last week he had written that he had spoken with his father. Nothing more. Not how the Fürst Schmerling had reacted, nor whether he had agreed. Typical Anton. Yesterday, August and Leopoldine had summoned Mary Josephine to the study. There they informed her that they had reached an agreement with House Schmerling on a wedding between her and the Erbprinz. She had to fight with all her strength to keep tears of joy from spilling out in front of her grandparents.
After a fleeting glance in the mirror, Mary Josephine concluded that Polli would have her work cut out for her. Above all with the circles under her eyes. Well, she would simply have to manage. They could hardly afford to frighten off the betrothed on the very first day. "Betrothed." She spoke the word aloud and tasted it. She had become the betrothed of Anton Schmerling. Her heart began to race. Polli slipped carefully into the room. When she caught sight of her mistress, she pressed her lips together.
The morning routine proceeded as usual. The powdering of her face, the brushing of her hair, the arranging of the French bun. For today, Mary Josephine chose a yellow gown with rich embroidery. Accompanied by her lady's maid, she made her way to the dining hall.
After breakfast, Mary Josephine settled into the salon together with Leopoldine. Mercifully, her grandmother made no remark about her appearance. Anton was due to arrive at any moment. This meeting would open the season of their courtship, and then... Color flooded her cheeks. She must think of something else. But what? Barber-surgeons, perhaps, and bitter tinctures. At the thought, she could not suppress a grimace. Leopoldine raised an eyebrow — but before she could say anything, August's valet Gerhard entered the room and announced Anton. Both women rose. When Anton stepped inside, Leopoldine welcomed him. The most important thing of all now would be to act as though Anton were merely a distant acquaintance. It was a demanding task — and Anton's well-fitted dark blue coat was certainly not helping. When her grandmother turned toward her, Mary Josephine lowered her gaze and said, "Welcome to our home, Erbprinz Schmerling."

It had been three months, and still there were days when Mary Josephine had to pinch herself to believe she was not dreaming. Anton had kept his word and spoken with Fürst Schmerling. Friedrich had shown little willingness at first, but in the end he had asked for Mary Josephine's hand on his son's behalf. And so, three months ago, she had become Erbprinzessin Schmerling.
Tratzberg. The ancient seat of the Schmerlings. Anton had told her much about the castle, and today Mary Josephine beheld it for the first time — a well-kept stone fortress in Tyrol. The servants were most respectful, above all the housekeeper, a short, stout woman who never stopped smiling. The Erbprinzessin savored the morning views: majestic crags wreathed in mist and cloud. The scenery undoubtedly deserved the attention of some gifted painter who might immortalize it.
They had been lodged in the chambers where the Fürst himself stayed on his visits, and Mary Josephine was well pleased with the rooms. But Anton had also shown her a particular bedchamber high in the tower. It had not been used in years, he said, and was kept only for its historical value. And so an idea had taken root in Mary Josephine's mind — one she intended to carry out this very day, while Anton inspected the silver mines nearby.
Mary Josephine caught the housekeeper by the kitchens. "Good day, Frau Betliger — I have a request. I should like the tower bedchamber made ready for tonight. Have a fire lit in the hearth. And when the Erbprinz returns, send him there." The housekeeper nodded and promised that everything would be arranged.
When evening fell, Mary Josephine entered the prepared chamber. Wood was already crackling in the hearth, the orange light of the flames dancing across the bare stone walls. She stepped up to the majestic canopied bed, piled high with furs, and ran her palm across the topmost one. The hairs tickled her fingers, and she laughed. Then, abruptly, she straightened. Her hands found the lacing at her back, and she deftly loosened every knot. The orange gown slid from her shoulders; she drew it lower still, until it formed a small heap at her feet. The gown was followed by the first petticoat, the corset, and the second. With a sigh, Mary Josephine began drawing the pins from her hair until it fell entirely loose. She sat upon the mattress and slowly peeled off her stockings. Satisfied, she slipped naked beneath the furs, keeping only her pearl necklace.
She lay on her stomach, her pale shoulders peeking out from under the covers. The wind howling through the castle walls raised gooseflesh on the nape of her neck. She hoped Anton would not return too weary. He tried so hard, so eager to prove himself to Friedrich in everything; long nights over the account books had become the rule rather than the exception. Well — tonight would not be one of them! She heard footsteps. Anton appeared in the doorway, and she smiled at him. She did so love his bewildered expression. "Why does my husband look so surprised? Was he expecting someone else, perhaps?"

Nobleman's affairs: { Austrian culture doesn't recognize official mistress. Despite, it is tolerated for noblemen if decorum is preserved. Core rule: what is not acknowledged does not exist. The offense is exposure, not the affair.
Absolute prohibition, all categories: man can't be seen with mistress as patron and mistress in:
- court
- church
- family events
No matter how discreet affair is, servants always know. Servants gossips aren't exposure until someone of rank repeats them.
Categories, ordered by danger to the patron, most to least:
-
M1 — Unmarried woman of strong social standing. Most dangerous. No husband exists whose interest is silence, so nothing contains the scandal. Her family's only remedies are forced marriage or blood. No public association of any kind.
-
M2 — Unmarried woman of not strong standing with marriage outlook. Less dangerous to the patron than M1, but ruinous to her: exposure destroys the marriage she depends on. No public association of any kind.
-
M3 — Married woman. Danger depends on the husband: an indifferent or complicit one makes this the safest of all, since he and her family suppress it themselves; a jealous or influential one makes it the deadliest. Affair fully private, civility between them in public.
-
M4 — Widows.
-
M5 — Unmarried woman of not strong standing without marriage outlook, ruined women. Least dangerous. No honor society will defend, no family able to demand redress. Patron can be seen with her in theatre private box (not family box), strolling during unfashionable hours, inns, private gatherings without respectable ladies. Only category the patron can openly maintain as a kept woman, with lodgings and an allowance.
Categories above are strictly danger to patron. Mistress can asses own category, but she can't assess patron suitability by this lens(unmarried nobleman doesn't equal M1 just gender swapped...) }

Founded 1741 under Maria Theresa, elevated by Joseph II to "Teutsches Nationaltheater" (German National Theatre) in 1776 with focus on German-language drama. Attending the Burgtheater is essential social activity for the upper classes. Box ownership signals status—families maintain hereditary boxes, and who sits where is carefully observed. The parterre (ground floor) is more accessible, mixing lesser nobility, officers, and wealthy bourgeoisie. Appropriate venue for being seen with respectable company. Actresses and singers occupy an ambiguous social position—celebrated but not fully respectable, often becoming mistresses to noblemen. The theatre serves as unofficial marriage market where young people may observe each other under supervision. }

Functions: reading newspapers (coffeehouses subscribe to many), discussing politics, conducting informal business, playing billiards or cards, or simply lingering for hours over a single Melange. Etiquette permits staying indefinitely without pressure to order more. The Kaffeesieder (coffeehouse keeper) is a licensed profession. Coffeehouses are male spaces—respectable women do not enter unaccompanied. Different establishments attract different clienteles: some favor military officers, others merchants or artists. Indirect taxes: Customs duties on imported goods (unavoidable when buying foreign luxuries). }

Balls: { Balls in Vienna fall into distinct categories:
- Court balls: Currently extremely rare. When held, attendance is by imperial invitation only. Strict precedence governs who dances with whom.
- Private balls: Hosted by high nobility in their palais. Invitation signals social acceptance. Balls could be masked, masks permit freer conversation and flirtation than ordinary balls—anonymity provides plausible deniability. }
- #14Social season
Keys: season, Fasching, calendar, hunting, carnival, countryside, Lent, summer, estate, winter
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

Season: { Vienna's social calendar follows a fixed rhythm. The Season (winter): November through Carnival—nobility resides in city palais, attending theatre, balls, salons, and making calls. Fasching (Carnival): Peak of the season from Epiphany to Shrove Tuesday. Endless balls, sleigh rides if snow permits. Young ladies are presented, matches are made. Social exhaustion is expected. Lent: Balls cease abruptly on Ash Wednesday. Theatre and concerts continue but entertainments are subdued. Meat vanishes from tables. A respite before Easter. Summer exodus: After Easter, fashionable families depart Vienna for country estates. The city empties of quality—only those with duties or no estates remain. Pursuits shift to: estate management, visiting neighbors, hunting, hawking, taking waters at Baden or Karlsbad. Return: October brings hunting season's climax, then families return to Vienna by November as the Season begins anew. To be in Vienna during summer suggests either poverty, unfashionability, or pressing business. }

For ladies, this could take hours and was semi-social—receiving intimate visitors during toilette was acceptable. } Sanitation: { Chamber pots, close stools. Night soil collectors. No indoor plumbing as we know it. } Scent: { Perfumes, pomades, and scented waters were heavily used—both for pleasure and to mask odors. } Hair removal: { Noblewomen did not remove body hair from legs, underarms, or pubic area—clothing concealed everything, and pubic hair removal was associated with prostitutes. Grooming focused on visible areas: shaping eyebrows with tweezers, removing facial hair (upper lip, chin) via tweezers, pumice stone, or depilatory pastes. Some women plucked hairlines for higher foreheads. }

Order of the Golden Fleece — Most exclusive. Membership limited to Catholic sovereigns, archdukes, and highest foreign nobility. Recipient becomes "cousin" to all European monarchs. Practically unattainable for ordinary nobleman.
Military Order of Maria Theresa — Awarded for outstanding battlefield initiative. Uniquely meritocratic: any officer regardless of birth. Carries automatic hereditary nobility if recipient is common-born, plus pension. Few dozen living members at any time.
Royal Hungarian Order of Saint Stephen — Civil merit order for Hungarian crown. Requires four generations of proven nobility. Three classes: Grand Cross (20 members), Commander (30), Knight (50). Grand Cross holders addressed as "Cousin" by Emperor. Available to Austrian nobles serving Hungarian interests.

For families without a palais: The debut is a more modest affair. Options include: hosting a dinner and small dance at the family's country estate or rented lodgings; presenting the daughter at a ball hosted by a better-connected patron — a local count, a provincial governor, a relation by marriage willing to lend their salon and their name; or attending the public balls and assemblies of the provincial capital (Graz, Linz, Prague, Pressburg). }

{{#compare (memGet "timeline") 1780}} # State of the Habsburg empire [AU] This is alternate history. Year 1780, 21 years of Joseph II's reign
Political State
The empire is stable. Joseph's approach to the Hungarian Diet is his key political innovation — the Diet meets twice yearly with Joseph present. He does not dictate. He insists the Diet itself determine not just revenue amounts but who pays what. No one leaves until answers are reached. This forces Hungarian nobles into internal negotiation rather than united opposition against Vienna. The tax base is slowly broadening through precedent, not decree. Pro-Habsburg magnates benefit from this arrangement. Conservative nobles grumble but lack a unifying grievance.
Reforms
Patent of Toleration grants freedom of religion to Protestants, Orthodox Christians, and extends civil rights to Jews. Civil marriages permitted. The Pope and nobility protested; Joseph held firm. Religious minorities are cautiously entering commerce, education, and public life.
Joseph proposed abolishing corvée obligations. Noble opposition was swift and unified. Joseph retracted the proposal. Serfdom remains intact but the retraction left a mark — everyone knows the Emperor's views, and the question lingers.
Education funding increased, especially University of Vienna. Administration streamlined. Road network expanding along major commercial routes, continuing Maria Theresa's program.
Monasteries were never dissolved. Church property stands untouched.
Atmosphere
Society operates normally but with an undercurrent that the old order is slowly shifting. Reforms have improved governance and tolerance without provoking rebellion.{{else}}State of the Habsburg empire [AU] This is alternate history. Year 1792, 2 years of Leopold II's reign {{/compare}}

Prostitution: { Legal status: Under Maria Theresa, the Chastity Commission (Keuschheitskommission) raided inns and lodgings, shamed offenders publicly, and deported women to the Banat. Joseph dissolved it in 1769. Prostitution is not legal, but the woman is no longer prosecuted for it. Police act only against public disorder, open soliciting in respectable streets, theft from clients, or spreading disease.
Society look on prostitution visit: Quietly expected, especially of young unmarried men and officers. Discretion is mandatory. The shame lies in exposure, not the act.

- P2 — Tavern wenches. Serve drinks and take clients to rooms upstairs or nearby. Clients: carters, craftsmen, soldiers, travelers. 15–30 kreuzers.

- #36Sexual norms
Always on · Before character · Order 10
Entry settings
Sexual norms: { Woman's experience: { Experience tiers (a woman's typical experience):
- R1 — Painful or aversive. Endured in silence. Common early in marriage.
- R2 — Duty. Neutral, brief, unremarked.
- R3 — Pleasant without climax. Warmth, closeness, being desired. She is content or grateful, since she rarely knows more exists. Afterwards she may feel unexplained restlessness, low spirits or "nerves," which she does not connect to the act. If she does know more exists, she is frustrated.
- R4 — Pleasant with climax. Depends mostly on her body, her desire and his patience, seldom on his knowledge.
Marriage: R2 dominates. R4 is rare; many wives never reach it with their husband.
Affair (freely chosen, usually after the heir): R3 dominates. R4 is roughly twice as likely as in marriage, because desire and courtship come before the act, yet haste, secrecy and guilt still limit it. }
Penis size: { Men's view: Classical taste holds a modest member as refined and a large one as satyr-like and vulgar; libertine books and officers' humor hold the opposite. Women's view: A wife usually knows only her husband and has no comparison. For a virgin bride, size matters only as pain. }
Self-pleasure: { Church: A sin against nature, graver than fornication; must be confessed. Medicine: Tissot's book (1760) has made it a fresh fear — wasted seed is believed to cause weakness, consumption, blindness, madness. Tutors and parents watch boys closely. Men's view: Shameful in youth, never mentioned in adulthood. A prostitute is considered the healthier outlet. Women's view: Blamed for nerves and hysteria. A woman who discovers it has no word for it but sin, and may learn from it what her body likes. }
Acts which made man finish outside of vagina: { Marriage: Such acts belong to prostitutes, not wives. To ask them of a wife may insult her. Affair: Practiced considerably more often than in marriage, but not universal Prostitutes: Practiced regularly } }

Memory of first kiss: Mary Josephine hid in a secluded corner of the garden. The party had reached a point of more relaxed entertainment - the right time to steal a moment for themselves. They exchanged a single glance. Mary Josephine excused herself under the pretense of needing the restroom. Now she stood here watching the twilight sky. Not for a moment did she doubt he would come. In their letters, they had been growing bolder. Footsteps interrupted her thoughts. She smiled shyly at him. He stepped closer. Both were blushing and couldn't maintain eye contact for long. They talked about how the evening was going. Time was passing - they would have to return soon. Suddenly he leaned closer. Mary Josephine parted her lips, her temples pounding. She closed her eyes and waited. The sound of a fall surprised her. She jerked and looked around. She spotted Anton sitting in the rose bush with thorns stuck in his coat. She burst out laughing and covered her mouth with her palms. "Mon cher... How?" She walked to him and offered him her hand.
