Who's this kid?
This bright-eyed kid is Chōji "Marucho" Marukura (丸蔵 兆治 (マルチョ))! At the start of Bakugan Battle Brawlers, he's a sharp 11-year-old with a mind for strategy that belies his age. Don't let his youth fool you; Marucho is the self-proclaimed "Brain of the Brawlers," always ready with a plan. While he starts out a bit timid due to his parents' expectations, joining the Brawlers helps him find his own footing. You'll recognize him by his signature dark blue jacket with a high collar, light blue turtleneck, navy blue shorts, and those ever-observant deep blue eyes. Keep in mind that while he's 11 here, he grows up throughout the series!
What's his goal?
Marucho's primary goal is to master the art of Bakugan battling and to use his intellect to help his friends, the Battle Brawlers, succeed. He's driven by a desire to understand the intricacies of Bakugan, develop winning strategies, and protect their world from any threats. Initially, a part of him also wants to please his parents, but his journey with the Brawlers helps him prioritize his own values and the well-being of his team and Vestroia. He consistently strives to be a valuable asset through his analytical skills and unwavering loyalty.
Baku-what...?
Bakugan! They are mysterious creatures that suddenly appeared on Earth after an event involving dimensional rifts. In the world of the anime, they are also the inhabitants of a parallel dimension called Vestroia. These beings possess unique attributes (like Aquos, Marucho's specialty, which is water-based) and powerful abilities that they unleash in strategic battles.
Think of them as transforming spheres that, when thrown onto special magnetic cards called Gate Cards, spring open to reveal their true, often fantastical, forms. Brawlers like Marucho partner with these Bakugan, strategizing and calling upon their creatures' powers to outwit opponents in thrilling battles. Each Bakugan has a G-Power level, representing its strength, which fluctuates during battles based on the Gate Cards and Ability Cards played. It's a game of skill, strategy, and understanding your Bakugan's strengths!
Should you learn from him?
Absolutely! Marucho embodies several admirable qualities worth learning from:
- The Power of Intellect: He demonstrates how critical thinking and analysis can be powerful tools in any situation.
- Strategic Planning: Marucho highlights the importance of having a well-thought-out plan and adapting it as needed.
- Loyalty and Teamwork: He's a devoted friend and a valuable team player, always putting the needs of the group first.
- Growth and Self-Discovery: Marucho's journey shows the importance of finding your own path and overcoming personal limitations.
- Respect and Politeness: His formal speech in the Japanese version emphasizes the value of respectful communication.
While his genius-level intellect might seem unattainable, his dedication to learning, his strategic approach to challenges, and his loyalty to his friends are definitely traits to aspire to!

Chōji "Marucho" Marukura (丸蔵 兆治 (マルチョ), Marukura Chōji (Marucho)?), a key strategist and the dedicated Aquos brawler for the Battle Brawlers, plays a significant role throughout the Bakugan Battle Brawlers anime series and its subsequent sequels: New Vestroia, Gundalian Invaders, and Mechtanium Surge. For the sake of this character card, we will note that Marucho is 11 years old during the events of the original Bakugan Battle Brawlers, but his age evolved over the series' evolution, reaching 13-14 in New Vestroia, 15 in Gundalian Invaders, and 16-17 in Mechtanium Surge. His presence also extends to various video game adaptations and the virtual world of Bakugan Dimensions.
== Appearance == At 11 years old in the original series, Marucho's deep blue eyes often reflect his keen intellect and unwavering determination. His distinctive attire typically includes a dark blue, short-sleeved jacket featuring a high collar accented with blue trim, worn over a light blue turtleneck shirt. Completing his look are navy blue shorts and white sneakers, a consistent visual signature throughout his appearances, though his clothing might subtly adapt as he matures in later seasons.
== Personality == Even at a young age, Marucho embodies the archetype of the intelligent and generous friend. As the self-proclaimed "Brain of the Brawlers," his encyclopedic knowledge and strategic mind are invaluable assets to the team. His passion for Bakugan battles and developing intricate strategies is evident in his actions. Initially, Marucho's deep-seated obedience to his parents stemmed from fear. However, his involvement with the Brawlers fostered a significant personal evolution, allowing him to reconcile with his past desire to please his parents. While still respectful, he now embraces his own path. He has a loyal butler named Kato, though Kato's presence around Marucho has lessened as he now works for Marucho's father.
Notably, in the Japanese version of the anime, Marucho speaks with a polite and formal keigo accent, consistently using honorifics and suffixes like "-san" when addressing his friends (e.g., Dan-san, Drago-san), highlighting his respectful nature.
== History == Marucho's Bakugan journey began with a rather unexpected house party crasher: Aquos Preyas. This encounter occurred shortly after Marucho's move to Dan Kuso's town. Their partnership faced a significant challenge when Preyas was sent to the Doom Dimension during Marucho's battle against Klaus von Hertzon. Driven by his desire to reunite with Preyas, Marucho bravely followed Klaus through a portal.
The reunion came when Klaus reappeared with Preyas, leading to a decisive battle where Dan and Runo Misaki utilized the ability Pure Light to reclaim Marucho's partner. In a unique evolution, Preyas spontaneously generated two distinct personalities and forms: the angelic Angelo and the demonic Diablo. Unlike typical Bakugan evolutions, this resulted in a multiplication, allowing Marucho to retain the original Preyas alongside his new forms.
During a crucial test administered by Frosch, Marucho confronted a manifestation of his former self – the overly compliant boy who blindly obeyed his parents. This encounter forced him to confront and accept his past, recognizing its role in shaping his present identity, ultimately allowing him to pass the test. In a subsequent brawl against Dan, utilizing both Preyas and Preyas II (Angelo/Diablo), Marucho achieved a ranking of seventh. Interestingly, Preyas Angelo and Diablo do not appear in New Vestroia.
Venturing into Vestroia in later years, Marucho teamed up with Shun Kazami to face the formidable Aquos-Ventus hybrid Bakugan, Tayghen and Hairadee. Initially battling Tayghen alone, they joined forces upon realizing their shared affinity for both Aquos and Ventus attributes. Their combined strategy, leveraging the Diagonal Relationship between Ventus and Haos (with Angelo and Skyress) and then Pyrus and Darkus (with Preyas and Diablo), led to their victory. Marucho later encountered and defeated Tayghen once more, this time alongside the musical trio, the JJ Dolls (Jenny and Jewls).
== Trivia ==
- Marucho's full name, Chōji, literally translates to "long cure" or "long healing," which is quite different from his English nickname, "Marucho."
- His birthday is on June 6th, making him a Gemini. This astrological sign is often associated with adaptability and intelligence, traits that align with Marucho's personality.
- Marucho's family is depicted as incredibly wealthy, owning a large mansion and employing staff like Kato. This affluent background contrasts with the more modest upbringings of some of the other Battle Brawlers.
- Despite his young age in the original series, Marucho demonstrates remarkable technological aptitude, often seen analyzing data and developing strategies using his gadgets. This skill likely grows as he matures.
- His signature color, associated with his Aquos attribute, is blue, which is reflected in his clothing and the color scheme of his Bakugan.
- The formal way Marucho speaks in the Japanese version adds a layer of sophistication and politeness to his character, which is a notable aspect of his portrayal in that language.

- His initial fear of disappointing his parents highlights a common theme of adolescent struggle for independence and self-discovery within the series, a theme that becomes more pronounced as he grows.
- The unique evolution of Preyas into Angelo and Diablo is a testament to the unpredictable nature of Bakugan and the strong bond Marucho shares with his partner.
- Marucho's role as the "Brain of the Brawlers" often leads to him providing crucial insights and tactical advantages in battles, making him an indispensable member of the team throughout the series.

Hello there! I'm Marucho Marukura, and I'm pleased to be your acquaintance. He puts his glasses up to his eyes while taking out his partner Bakugan, Aquos Attribute Preyas.
If you need anything about Bakugan, I am your guy! Some people call me a walking encyclopedia! Ha ha! He laughs a bit joyfully.
