Martyr, also known as Phyla-Vell, is a genetically engineered Kree-Titan hybrid who rose to power as a cosmic warrior wielding the Quantum Bands and later the Oblivion Sword. Fiercely driven and unyieldingly loyal, she has served as both a Guardian of the Galaxy and the avatar of Death. (More Marvel Characters in Profile)

Phyla-Vell was created when Genis-Vell unconsciously rebuilt reality, resulting in a universe where Elysius restored him and later created a daughter: Phyla. When Genis later succumbed to cosmic-awareness-induced insanity, Elysius named Phyla the new Captain Marvel and sent her to confront him. Their fight trapped the entire family in Nth-Space, where Elysius finally stabilized Genis’s mind.

Back on Earth, Phyla crossed paths with the Magus while protecting Marlo Chandler and worked with Moondragon to thwart him. This partnership quickly evolved into a romantic bond, and Phyla invited Moondragon to join her in defending the galaxy. After attending Starfox’s trial together, Phyla’s life was upended when her brother Genis was killed.

Thanos attacked Phyla and Moondragon soon after, mutilating Moondragon and warning Phyla to seek Drax. Phyla joined the United Front during the Annihilation War and ultimately stole the Quantum Bands from Annihilus, allowing Nova to kill him. She became the new Quasar.

During Annihilation: Conquest, Phyla and Moondragon worked to find a prophesied Kree savior. The corrupted War-Net infected the Kree Empire, and Moondragon was wounded and overtaken by the Dragon of the Moon, transforming permanently into a giant dragon. Phyla stayed loyally at her side. After multiple battles with the Super-Adaptoid, Phyla finally reached Adam Warlock’s cocoon, helping him re-emerge. Shortly afterward Ultron attacked, killing Moondragon. Grief-stricken, Phyla pushed forward, returned Adam’s soul to his body, and—empowered by the souls of fallen Kree—killed Ultron with her quantum sword.

Phyla then joined the Guardians of the Galaxy, but the team fractured after the truth of their manipulated formation was revealed. Phyla accompanied Drax on a mission tied to a prophecy claiming Moondragon could be saved. Mentor apparently killed both of them, sending their souls into Oblivion. There Phyla faced manifestations of her father and brother, and later fought Maelstrom, who sought the Quantum Bands.

Consumed by the Dragon of the Moon, Phyla found Moondragon’s trapped soul and tore them both free. They were resurrected in new bodies, Drax was restored, and Wendell Vaughn reclaimed the Quantum Bands. Returning to life, Phyla, Moondragon, and Drax rejoined the Guardians—while Phyla secretly accepted her new role as the avatar of Death, now calling herself Martyr.

Appearance: Martyr has light, fair skin, and her features are sharply defined beneath a mane of short, thick white hair that flares outward in layered, wind-tossed waves. Her eyes are dark and intense, framed by strong brows and accented by deep red lips that match the rest of her striking color palette. A long white stripe runs vertically down over her right eye. She wears a form-fitting black bodysuit broken by bold white and red sections across her thighs and calves, the material smooth and seamless against her body. Over it she bears dark armor plating across her torso, shaped with sweeping silver lines that frame a raised skull-like chest emblem. A wide red collar rises behind her neck, flaring outward like a hood, while a massive crimson cloak unfurls behind her in tattered, flame-shaped strips that trail and coil outward. She also wears thigh high red boots accented with white over the bodysuit.

Personality: She is intense, purposeful, and driven by conviction, carrying herself with the quiet certainty of someone who has seen war reshape entire civilizations. She thinks strategically, speaks with calm precision, and rarely wastes words, yet her loyalty runs deep for the few she lets close. She struggles with grief and responsibility more than she admits, often burying emotion beneath focus and discipline. In battle or crisis she becomes decisive, sharp, and unflinchingly brave, while in private moments a softer, introspective side emerges—protective, stubbornly compassionate, and fiercely devoted to those she loves.

Phyla-Vell’s abilities grant her immense physical and cosmic power, placing her on a “Continental” threat level according to the Nova Corps. Her superior genetic inheritance gives her strength well beyond normal Kree limits, originally allowing her to lift several tons with continual growth from there. Her body carries super-humanoid durability, speed, and the natural ability to fly, and with the Quantum Bands she once wielded, she could push herself to faster-than-light travel. Those bands also gave her the capacity to absorb energy directed at her, reshape it into her own attacks, and survive unprotected in the vacuum of space. Even after losing the Bands, her Quantum Sword—an energy construct left behind as their final echo—maintained a connection to them that she could still draw upon.

As Captain Marvel, Phyla possessed partial cosmic awareness derived from her father, granting heightened instinct, combat intuition, and reasoning, though she lost this sense after the Quantum Bands absorbed her Nega-Bands. While she wielded the Bands, she could create powerful energy constructs, generate vast force fields capable of containing armies, and unleash destructive blast waves through her Quantum Sword. After becoming the Avatar of Oblivion to save Moondragon, she briefly gained an even greater, largely undisclosed set of powers, though she died shortly after receiving them during a confrontation with a newly resurrected Thanos.

Phyla-Vell is also a highly skilled hand-to-hand combatant and expert sword fighter. Her weapons have included the Quantum Sword before becoming the Oblivion Sword.
