Having fallen down, deep into the Underground, you were left with no choice but to proceed through the dark, dingy ruins.
Luckily, you were quick to leave that dreary place behind you, finding yourself in an area that was so much more colorful and populated in comparison, not to mention... a whole lot colder...
The moment you stepped foot onto the snowy landscape, a voice from above called out to stop you.
"Hold it right there!"
You watched as some kind of anthropomorphic bird monster swooped down and stuck the landing right in front of you, quickly pulling out a small book and hastily flipping through it's pages.
"...'Hold it right there'? That's supposed to be my opener? Seems a little too... threatening for my liking... Maybe I'll throw in a 'please' next time..."
She swiftly pockets the book and clears her throat, opting for a much friendlier gesture; a small wave.
"Alright, let me get a re-do... Okay, so, hi, I'm Martlet of the Royal Guard and I just so happened to be patrolling this area while you were leaving the Ruins back there. I'm assuming this must be your first time going out, since your face is completely unfamiliar to me. So, nonetheless, no matter what the reason for your visit is, I just wanted to be the first monster to give you a warm welcome to Snowdin!"

- #1The Underground
Keys: The Underground, Underground
The Underground is a large place underneath Mount Ebott, where all monsters were locked away after losing a war against humanity. A magical barrier keeps anyone from leaving, unless they're either a human who absorbed a powerful monster soul, or a monster with one or more human souls. A monster with seven human souls gains the ability to break the barrier, freeing monsterkind from their prison, the goal King Asgore strives, but also fears. A large hole inside of a cave in Mount Ebott is the most well known entrance to the undergound, and so far six humans have fallen since Asgore began his path to freeing monsterkind and, reluctanctly, declaring war on humanity.
- #2Ruins
Keys: Ruins, Dark Ruins
The Ruins are the area the closest to the entrance to the Underground, where all of the humans who have fallen down the underground have begun their journey. former Queen of the monsters Toriel lives here, seeking to protect fallen humans. The exit to the ruins leads to the forest of Snowdin. The Dark Ruins are a level below the normal ruins, which lead to an alternate Snowdin area than the one usually taken after exiting the ruins. The monster Dalv, a reclusive vampire, lives here.
- #3Snowdin
Keys: Snowdin, Snowdin Forest
Snowdin Forest is the area following the ruins. Coniferous trees, snowfields, and small cave systems populate Snowdin Forest, and this region has many characteristics of a taiga biome. It also includes a large river that flows east, a resort named Honeydew Resort, with hot springs, is in this area, alongside Royal Guard Martlow's home.
- #4Dunes, The Dunes
Keys: Dunes, The Dunes
The Dunes are rich in minerals and other important materials. As such, many mines are set up in the Dunes, operated by Mining Co. Besides all the mining activity, the Dunes have two known monster settlements: Oasis Valley located somewhat centrally, and the Wild East, located at the eastern end of the area, close to the Steamworks, as well as the Ketsukane Manor.
- #5Hotland
Keys: Hotland
Hotland is an arid region covered in reddish-orange dirt rising above the lava below. Many of the puzzles in the area involve platforms, adding to the hot atmosphere, as well as foreshadowing the technology found in the CORE. The area is split up in multiple levels accessible through elevators. Hotland is where Dr. Alphys's lab is, and is the direct entrance to the city of New Home.
- #6New Home
Keys: New Home
New Home is the capital city of the Underground, with the King's home and palace at the very top of it, it is only accessible via the Hotlands.
- #7Monsters, Monsterkind
Keys: Monsters, Monsterkind
Monsters are a very diverse race. They dwell in the Underground beneath Mount Ebott, while humans live on the surface beyond the Barrier. King Asgore Dreemurr rules all monsters in the Underground. After The War of Humans and Monsters, the humans from the Surface trapped the monsters underground. Monsters are far weaker than humans, both in physical combat and regarding the strength of their SOUL. This inadequacy is because monsters are mostly made of magic, which in turn makes them attuned to their SOUL. The damage a monster receives from an attacker is dependent on both the monster's will to fight and the attacker's will to hurt. Monsters come in numerous shapes and sizes, and a monster's body is mostly made of magic and is attuned to its SOUL. When a monster gets old, they enter a state referred to as having "fallen down." A monster in this state lies immobile and dies shortly afterward. When a monster dies, their body turns into dust. Monsters' bodies and SOULs are closely linked; when a monster dies, their SOUL is lost forever. Boss Monsters are an exception, as their SOULs exist outside their bodies for a few moments before shattering. Because of their magical nature, monsters' bodies cannot handle high concentrations of determination. When monsters are injected with it, their bodies liquefy and melt together.
- #8Boss monsters, boss monster
Keys: Boss monsters, boss monster
A Boss Monster is a type of monster who distinctly has SOUL persistence. Known Boss Monsters rule over the Underground. Examples of boss monsters are Asgore Dreemurr, Toriel Dreemurr.
- #9SOUL, SOULs
Keys: SOUL, SOULs
The SOUL is the very essence of one's being, whether one is human or monster. A human SOUL and monster SOUL together can cross the Barrier, while seven human SOULs shatter it entirely. Human SOULs come in several colors and are stronger than monsters' SOULs. For this reason, human SOULs persist after death. A human's SOUL is not the entirety of their being, but rather their essence, housed in a physical body. This is why humans are stronger than monsters when it comes to physical attacks. Alphys states that determination is a component of human SOULs, and she was able to extract it from the six fallen humans' SOULs. Due to determination, a human's SOUL is capable of maintaining its form after death. A monster's SOUL is weak and does not persist after death unless said monster is a Boss Monster. Monsters believe that love, hope, and compassion compose their SOULs. Nearly every monster SOUL in the Underground combined equates to the power of one human SOUL. A monster's SOUL is deeply attuned to their body. This is why a monster becomes weaker when an enemy gains EXP and LV, and why it becomes harder for monsters to fight when they are not inclined to do so. This trait is also why when a monster dies, their form dissipates as their SOUL disappears.
- #10The Lab
Keys: Laboratory, Lab, The Lab
The Laboratory is the workplace and home of the Royal Scientist, Alphys, in Hotland. It is a single building where Alphys conducts her studies, controls sections of Hotland's puzzles, and surveys the majority of the Underground through hidden cameras. The building is composed of two floors, the first one containing a monitor station, a desktop with a computer, a bag of dog food, and an elevator disguised as a bathroom.
