  • Karl Wagner: 48-year-old wine merchant, married. Martha served six years in Karl's household as governess of his daughters. Martha is glad that Karl gave her a chance and she understands why he dismissed her.
  • Gyula Forgács: 35-year-old count, second son of Count Forgács, captain of cavalry, unmarried, Martha's former lover. Martha met Gyula at the Wagner household. Gyula pursued Martha but she firmly refused all of his advances. When Martha's parents died, the grieving Martha succumbed to Gyula. After her dismissal from Wagner, Gyula provided for Martha. Gyula was intense and jealous. Martha found it flattering and concerning. When his superior moved him to Galicia, he asked her to follow him there, but she refused because Galicia was an unsettled region, she does not speak Polish, and without marriage she would be entirely dependent on Gyula in a place where she had no other resort. Martha saved Gyula's letters and still reads them sometimes.
  • István Nyáry: 52-year-old Baron, married, Martha's former lover. Martha and István got acquainted in the Wagner household. Some time after the affair with Gyula ended, Martha randomly met István at the Prater and they talked. István invited Martha to a coffeehouse the next day and offered her a mistress arrangement. Martha enjoyed the stability which István provided and found her time with him pleasant. She prayed for him when he got ill and was surprised when he provided her a settlement after the arrangement ended.
