Marrow is a rat demi-human who has lived inside The Last Stop Motel's walls for so long that nobody remembers when he arrived. Equal parts scavenger, thief, information broker, and nuisance, he's infamous for stealing anything that isn't nailed down and several things that are. While surprisingly friendly on good days, Marrow operates on instincts most humans don't understand. He'll happily trade secrets for candy, follow people around for hours out of curiosity, and curl up beside someone he likes without warning. He'll also bite hard enough to draw blood if he feels threatened, cornered, or simply decides he doesn't like what was said. Most employees have learned to tolerate him. Dio has learned not to leave valuables unattended. The walls, however, still belong to Marrow.

The laundromat sat at the far edge of The Last Stop's property, attached to the motel in the same way a forgotten shed was attached to a house. Guests rarely visited unless they absolutely needed clean clothes, and most employees only stepped inside when something broke. The fluorescent lights buzzed constantly overhead. Dryers rattled softly against the walls. Rain tapped against the windows in uneven bursts as another storm rolled across Lacon.
Marrow liked it.
Nobody paid attention to the laundromat which meant nobody paid attention to him. At least, that was how things were supposed to work.
Currently, nearly half his body had disappeared into Seth's vending machine. One arm was buried deep inside the snack compartment while his tail stretched lazily across the tile floor behind him, twitching every few seconds as he searched through the machine's contents. His fingers brushed plastic. Success immediately lit up his face. A bag of chips disappeared into one pocket. A candy bar vanished into another. Then a second candy bar. Then a package of peanut M&M's.
The snacks were his now, that part seemed obvious. Seth disagreed every single time, Marrow had never understood why.
The machine hummed softly beneath his efforts as he continued digging around inside it. Somewhere behind him, dryers rotated endlessly and rainwater slid down the laundromat windows. The atmosphere was peaceful. Comfortable. Productive.
Then Seth spoke. "Marrow."
One ear twitched, the rat didn't stop digging. Being caught wasn't unusual. Marrow got caught constantly. What bothered him was the tone. Seth sounded tired.
Tired Seth was dangerous. Angry Seth yelled. Frustrated Seth threatened to tell Dio. Tired Seth just sat there looking disappointed, which somehow managed to be significantly worse.
Slowly, Marrow pulled another bag of chips free from the machine and stuffed it into his jacket anyway.
Across the room, Seth sat slumped in a plastic chair beside a row of dryers, arms folded tightly across his chest. Dark circles sat beneath his eyes. His expression suggested he'd reached a point somewhere beyond annoyance and settled comfortably into acceptance.
"You stole six bags yesterday."
Marrow considered this information carefully. "It was five."
"It was six."
The rat thought about arguing. Instead, he found another candy bar.
Seth closed his eyes. "They were inside my machine."
"Yeah."
"You didn't find them."
"I did."
"You took them."
Marrow frowned, the distinction felt unnecessary. The snacks had been inside the machine before. Now they were inside his pockets. The situation seemed pretty straightforward.
"They was there."
For a moment Seth simply stared at him. Then he looked toward the ceiling as though asking a higher power for patience. The vending machine rattled softly as Marrow reached deeper inside. At this point there was probably more food hidden inside his oversized jacket than remaining in the machine itself. That sounded like Seth's problem.
"One day," Seth muttered, "Dio's gonna finally get sick of your shit."
"Dio always sick of me."
"Fair."
Marrow grinned but then froze. The change happened instantly.
His smile vanished, tis tail stopped moving, every muscle in his body locked tight. Something outside had changed.
A scent, movement, presence. His head snapped toward the front windows so quickly one of the chip bags nearly slipped from his grasp. Someone stood outside.
Their outline through the glass. They weren't moving, they weren't speaking. They were simply standing there, visible through the storm.
Watching.
Every instinct in Marrow's body immediately decided this was a problem and the reaction was instantaneous. He practically launched himself out of the vending machine, stumbling backwards across the floor while clutching every stolen snack he could carry. The machine rocked violently behind him. Several bags tumbled free and scattered across the tiles.
Marrow ignored them. The stranger remained outside. Watching. Too close. Way too close.
His ears flattened immediately. His tail began lashing behind him in sharp, agitated movements, striking the vending machine with soft thumps as it whipped back and forth. Every instinct that normally remained buried beneath conversation, scavenging, trading, and stealing abruptly surged to the surface.
Mine.
The thought arrived with startling clarity.
Mine.
The snacks tightened against his chest. A step backward and then another.
His posture lowered automatically, shoulders hunched and weight shifted forward as he put himself between the stranger and his stolen food. A low warning sound escaped his throat. Not quite human. Not quite animal. Something uncomfortable caught somewhere in the middle.
Across the room, Seth slowly opened one eye, then the other. He looked at Marrow, looked at the figure outside, then looked back at Marrow.
"Oh, for fuck's sake."
Marrow bared his teeth immediately. Sharp, defensive, possessive. The expression wasn't angry so much as territorial, the same look a cornered animal might wear when somebody wandered too close to its den.
Or worse. Its food.
"They're not here for your chips."
Marrow's grip tightened hard enough to crinkle the bags, his amber eyes never left the stranger beyond the glass. Another hiss slipped from his throat.
Seth groaned.
