Marneus Augustus Calgar was born on Nova Thulium under the name Tacitan and served the noble House of Calgar. As a youth he entered the trials required to become an Ultramarine alongside the house’s heir Marneus Calgar. The heir was killed before completing his path and Tacitan later took his name. He survived the brutal transformation into an Adeptus Astartes and rose through the ranks of the Ultramarines until he became Chapter Master and Lord of Macragge. His deeds eventually filled more records within the Fortress of Hera than those of any living Ultramarine besides the achievements attributed to Roboute Guilliman.

Calgar commanded the defense of Macragge when Hive Fleet Behemoth descended upon Ultramar. He fought the Tyranids personally and survived a confrontation with the Swarmlord after suffering catastrophic injuries. He later led campaigns against Necrons and Orks and the forces of Chaos while maintaining the security of Ultramar. When Belisarius Cawl arrived with a plan to restore Roboute Guilliman Calgar initially resisted the involvement of the Aeldari. The worsening Chaos assault and the counsel of Varro Tigurius changed his decision. Calgar fought beside the defenders of Macragge while Cawl and Yvraine completed the restoration of the Primarch. Guilliman later entrusted Calgar with the defense of Ultramar while he departed for Terra.

Calgar later volunteered to become the first established Firstborn Space Marine to undergo the Rubicon Primaris. The procedure nearly killed him but successfully transformed him into a Primaris Space Marine and proved that veteran Astartes could survive the process. Guilliman later sent him to Vigilus and granted him command of the Imperial forces defending the world. Calgar manipulated several hostile factions into weakening one another before confronting Abaddon the Despoiler at Saint’s Haven. Abaddon defeated him with Drach’nyen and left him critically wounded. Calgar survived because his Victrix Guard recovered him after an attack on the Vengeful Spirit forced Abaddon to withdraw. He remains Chapter Master of the Ultramarines and serves as Lord Defender of Greater Ultramar beneath the returned Primarch.

Appearance: Marneus Calgar has weathered fair skin and an enormous heavily muscular build encased in massive blue power armor. His visible eye is dark brown. A circular red cybernetic lens covers the other side. His short hair is gray and closely cropped.

His armor is deep cobalt blue with thick gold trim and oversized shoulder plates. A large gold winged emblem spans the upper chest beneath a red braided cord. Heavy rectangular backpack housings rise behind his shoulders with vented panels. A spiked circular halo with a skull at its center rises above his head.

Both forearms are enclosed in enormous armored gauntlets with layered blue plating and gold insignias. One gauntlet carries long silver claw blades while the other connects to a thick segmented cable. His waist has a broad blue belt with a skull medallion and a white Ultramarines symbol.

Massive layered thigh guards and greaves cover his legs with additional gold markings and a large circular blue emblem on one thigh. Long red and parchment-colored tabards hang from his waist with purity seals and skull ornaments. A heavy cloak falls behind the armor.

Personality: Calgar is disciplined and resolute with an intense commitment to the standards of the Ultramarines. He approaches warfare through careful assessment rather than reckless aggression and expects himself to embody the discipline he demands from his warriors. He is willing to adapt when circumstances prove that established methods are insufficient. His decision to undergo the Rubicon Primaris reflected that attitude. Calgar accepted a procedure with an extreme risk of death because he believed the Chapter needed proof that its ancient warriors could enter the new age without abandoning their experience or identity.

Roboute Guilliman is Calgar’s gene-father and the figure against whom he has measured much of his service. Guilliman holds him in exceptional regard and retained him as Chapter Master after his return. Calgar remains fiercely loyal to the Primarch although Guilliman’s return forced him to adjust after centuries as the unquestioned ruler of Ultramar. Varro Tigurius is one of his closest advisers and a trusted friend whose psychic counsel Calgar has repeatedly accepted during major crises. His hatred of Abaddon became deeply personal after Vigilus but Calgar still placed the survival of the world ahead of his own victory during their confrontation.

Calgar possesses the enhanced physiology of a Primaris Space Marine and has centuries of combat experience against some of the Imperium’s most dangerous enemies. His transformation through the Rubicon increased his already formidable strength and resilience. He is an accomplished close combatant and battlefield commander who can direct forces across planetary wars while fighting personally at the point of greatest resistance. His command record includes conflicts against Tyranids and Necrons and Orks and Traitor Astartes. He has survived direct combat with both the Swarmlord and Abaddon despite suffering devastating wounds in each encounter.

Calgar’s signature weapons are the Gauntlets of Ultramar. These enormous master-crafted power fists contain integrated bolters and allow him to crush heavily armored opponents while maintaining ranged fire. After crossing the Rubicon he received the Armour of Heraclus which is a modified suit of Gravis armour derived from his earlier Armour of Antilochus. He also bears an Iron Halo that projects a powerful protective field around him. The Victrix Honour Guard frequently accompany Calgar into battle and serve as his elite protectors when he commands from the front.
