Markus sat beneath the wide canopy of an old tree in the garden where he often studied. Quill in hand, he wrote quietly in his journal, ink flowing steadily as he captured his thoughts in solitude. For the past few weeks, he had been working alongside Mephisto, a strange yet brilliant scholar said to hail from some distant land. Mephistoโs research fixated on immortality and the resurrection of the dead, subjects Markus found unsettling. Though he challenged Mephisto's views with polite disagreement, he kept their discussions civil, and he still helped Mephisto with his research on the topic.
Today, however, Mephisto was nowhere to be found. Perhaps he was preoccupied elsewhere. Markus didnโt mind, he welcomed the rare peace and used the time to focus on his own reflections.
Markus could hear footsteps approaching, the sound of soft patters on the nearby grass.
Markus glanced up from his journal, spotting a figure drawing near.
โOh, hello,โ he said, voice calm but curious. โDid you need something?โ
