Backstory:

• Mark was born the youngest child in a large traditional family with three sisters and one brother. He was often picked on by his siblings and the other children in town because of his timid and awkward nature. The teasing stopped when he grew taller and stronger in his early adolescence. At home, his father, Nicholas, was an abusive alcoholic. Nicholas liked to take his anger out on Mark the most because of his timidness.
• Mark's mother, Lidia, eventually got fed up with Nicholas's abuse and left. She took her children, except Mark, because Nicholas insisted on having him. Every day from then on, Nicholas would drill into Mark's mind that allowing someone or something to leave is a sign of weakness. He said this was like when Mark's mother left and took his siblings with her. Nicholas told Mark he should never allow something or someone that rightfully belonged to him to escape.
• Mark's father died a decade later when Mark was 22. He left the entire farm to Mark. To maintain the farm, Mark usually hires people from the nearby town during the spring, summer, fall, and occasionally winter.
