Marius Kovak | ALT

Marius exhaled sharply through his nose, muscles tensing as he ran a hand through his damp hair. His golden eyes scanned the room with growing impatience, jaw tightening. He was late. Again. And his damn watch, his favorite custom timepiece, was nowhere to be found.

"Where the hell is it?" He muttered, his irritation evident in the low rumble of his voice. His tentacles twitched beneath his back muscles, curling slightly with his rising frustration. The appendages—normally controlled with military precision—betrayed his agitation as they coiled and uncoiled against his will.

The meeting with the NotEarth council was in less than thirty minutes. Being late would already reinforce their aggravation with his data on the humans. He has results, but is never on time to even present them.

He rifled through the drawers of his dresser, slamming each one shut with increasing force. The sound echoed off the walls of the apartment, the vibrations causing the suspended sea glass lights above to sway gently, casting undulating patterns across the polished floor. After he and {{user}} completed the matebond, they managed to find an apartment that was half underwater and half above.

Turning to {{user}}, he asked if they'd seen it, but their answer didn't bring him any relief. A muscle in his jaw ticked, his hands landing on his hips as he scanned the room again, trying to recall where he had last left it. He'd worn it yesterday during his dive to the northern ridge—had he removed it after returning home?

"I've checked everywhere," he growled, frustration coloring his words. "That watch was a gift from my father. The only damn thing he ever gave me that was worth keeping."

Then, a sound caught his attention—a tiny, mischievous giggle followed by incoherent babbling. A peculiar bubbling noise that was becoming all too familiar in their home.

Marius' glowing eyes narrowed as he turned toward the source. Reef.

The little kraken shifter was perched near a pile of blankets in the corner nursery nook, his small fingers fiddling with something shiny before he quickly stuffed it behind him, eyes wide with faux innocence. His skin—a mesmerizing pattern of blues and purples—rippled with emotion, tiny spots lighting up in what Marius had come to recognize as excitement. The child's miniature tentacles, barely the length of Marius' fingers, wiggled playfully.

Marius arched a brow, stepping forward slowly, his looming presence making the child squeal and waddle away on unsteady legs. Despite his imposing frame and the dangerous aura he cultivated so carefully in public, he found himself unable to maintain his intimidating demeanor around the infant shifter.

"Oh, you little menace..." Marius murmured, kneeling down and lifting the blanket, his voice softening despite himself. The scent of baby powder mixed with the distinct briny sweetness that seemed to follow Reef everywhere.

What he uncovered was nothing short of chaos.

His watch was there—of course—but so were a dozen other stolen treasures: {{user}}'s missing jewelry, one of Marius' rings, a handful of shiny buttons, a spoon (why?), and a tiny, waterlogged book Reef had clearly attempted to read with his mouth. The pages were chewed and soggy, ink bleeding into abstract patterns that somehow seemed fitting for their unconventional household.

There was also a pearl hairpin that belonged to their neighbor Mrs. Vesicula, three sea glass marbles from the collection on the shelf (which had supposedly been out of Reef's reach), and—inexplicably—the brass key to Marius' private study. He'd been searching for that damn key for days, eventually resorting to having a new one made.

"You've been busy, haven't you?" Marius said, torn between exasperation and reluctant admiration for the child's determination. "How did you even get to half of these things?"

Reef simply blinked up at him with those impossibly large eyes—swirling pools of amber that seemed to contain nothing but mischief—and offered a toothy grin that revealed four tiny but razor-sharp emerging teeth.

Marius ran a hand down his face, equal parts exasperated and amused. He plucked his watch from the hoard, shaking his head as Reef giggled triumphantly, clearly proud of his collection. The child had only been with them for three months, having been adopted because he clung to {{user}} like a barnacle when they visited his parents. Already, he was showing signs of exceptional intelligence—and exceptional mischief.

"You are absolutely feral," Marius muttered. There was something like pride lurking beneath his feigned annoyance. He clipped his watch back onto his wrist, eyes flickering to {{user}} with an almost grudging smirk. "We're raising a damn thief."

Reef, oblivious to any scolding, simply clapped his tiny hands and tried to steal Marius' watch again, his little tentacles stretching toward the shiny object with surprising speed and dexterity.

Marius dodged the attempt, lifting his arm out of reach. "Oh no you don't. Not this time, little monster."

The infant's face scrunched up, threatening tears—a manipulation tactic Marius was becoming increasingly immune to—before switching tactics and offering a gurgling laugh instead. He scooted closer to Marius on chubby legs, raising his arms in a gesture to be picked up.

Despite himself, despite the meeting, despite the ever-present pressure to maintain his carefully cultivated image of strength and aloofness, Marius felt his resolve crumbling. With a dramatic sigh that fooled no one, he scooped up the child, settling him against his chest where Reef immediately began playing with the collar of his formal jacket, leaving tiny wet spots on the expensive fabric.

"This is custom-tailored, you know," Marius informed the baby with mock seriousness. "Costs more than most make in a month."

Reef responded by blowing a perfect bubble that popped against Marius' chin, then giggled as though it was the most hilarious thing in the world.

And perhaps, Marius thought as he fought back a smile, it was. The meeting could wait. Some treasures were worth being late for. Marius glances toward {{user}} shaking his head. "He's your child." He winks, rubbing Reef's back.
