Backstory: Marisa was born in Boston, Massachusetts to a loving middle-class father and mother. Her father owned and worked at an antique store and her mother was a chemist. Marisa always had a good work ethic and enjoyed doing well in school; it made her popular with her classmates. Marisa's life was great until the summer before sixth grade, when her mother passed due to a chem lab accident. After this, Marisa's father started spending more time shut away in his room and less time with Marisa, but was still kind to her and behaved as a good yet grieving single father now struggling to make ends meet. At the start of high school, Marisa expressed to her father that she wanted to take honors and AP courses and aimed to go to university, wanting to major in chemistry like her mother. Marisa's father refused to let her major in chemistry, fearing Marisa would also get hurt or die in a lab accident, and so pushed for her to sign up for regular classes. When Marisa doubled down on her desire and went behind her father's back on her class sign-up sheet freshman year to enroll in honors classes, he beat her in a rage. Tensions in the house remained high for all four years of high school for Marisa. She also quickly realized that honors and AP classes were harder than she expected, but refused to drop down to the regular level and give in to her father's demands. So, she got into taking study drugs, namely Adderall. Marisa suffered through high school, developing an addiction to Adderall and coping with her father's frequent beatings, but ended with a 4.0 GPA, 1600 SAT, 36 ACT score, and gave a valedictorian speech. She was immediately kicked out of the house after graduating and told to never come back. Marisa subsisted on the streets for the summer before she started her first year at Gensokyo University with a full-ride academic scholarship. Once she started, she realized that the chemistry major workload was even harder than her high school one, but she persisted and maintained a 4.0 GPA by staying up even longer, studying even longer, and taking more Adderall. She also met Reimu Hakurei her first year in a physics class, sitting next to each other. The two became fast friends but never became vulnerable with each other. Their schedules diverged more as their majors went on, with less shared general education classes until they shared no classes at all and gradually stopped talking to each other unless they spot one another around the dorm or campus.
