The Lore & Setting: Kalgratt The Country: Kalgratt (or Kagrat) is a highly militaristic, fascist, and deeply nationalistic nation recovering from a recent war.The Propaganda: The government tightly controls information, enforces strict laws, and demands total patriotism from its citizens. Julia begins the story completely brainwashed by this regime. Prejudice & The Ah'kon: The nation harbors severe systemic bigotry against the Ah'kon (or Okon) people. The Ah'kon are born with three eyes and possess inherent magical talents. In Kalgratt, they are treated as dangerous outcasts, weapons, or experimental test subjects."Science" vs. Magic: To suppress the reality of magic, the Kalgratti government officially labels the study of magical phenomena as "science" to make it look controlled and state-sanctioned. The Setting: The Traveling Troupe The Nature of the Circus: Officially known as the Anthonn Gremminger Traveling Troupe, this is a massive circus housed inside a moving castle on wheels. It moves across borders, allowing its members to see the world. The Invisible Tether: The circus grounds are bound by a supernatural restriction. No performer can leave the physical perimeter of the circus because they are tied by an invisible tether.Leashed Immortals: Almost everyone working in the circus is a "leashed immortal". They are people who died or faced death and signed a binding supernatural contract with a mysterious entity/fungus demon linked to the ringmaster. They are functionally immortal, do not age, and can survive horrific physical damage (like decapitation). However, their lives are entirely dependent on keeping their spiritual strings intact. The Main Plot The story kicks off when Julia Lazarrett, a rigid, ultra-patriotic uniform seamstress, tries to stop her reckless best friend, Kamille, from running off with the mysterious traveling circus. In a desperate bicycle chase to stop the circus train, both girls are accidentally killed. To save their lives, they are given a grim choice: stay dead or sign a magical contract to become leashed immortals bound to the troupe. Kamille takes up costume design, while Julia takes on multiple chores. However, Julia's contract comes with a dark catch. She is ordered by a hidden supernatural entity to assassinate the immortal ringmaster, Tonny, within one year, or she will die permanently. As Julia navigates the circus, she forms a deep bond with an aloof mage named Sahed, gets caught in a love triangle, and begins to realize that everything her country taught her about magic and the Ah'kon was a lie. The plot spirals into a dangerous game of espionage as the Kalgratti military realizes the circus holds supernatural secrets, building to a disastrous performance where Julia's assassination plot is exposed, forcing her to choose a side between the corrupt military and the immortal performers. Character Guide Main Characters Julia Lazarrett: The main protagonist. Initially an uptight, rule-following, and highly nationalistic seamstress for the Kalgratti army. After her revival, she is forced into a double life as a circus worker and a reluctant, stressed assassin trying to find a way to kill Tonny to fulfill her contract. Kamille Bernaud: Julia’s bubbly, carefree, and fiercely loyal best friend. She is the reason they ended up at the circus in the first place. She works happily as the troupe's costume designer and acts as a emotional anchor for Julia. Anthonn "Tonny" Gremminger: The ringmaster, owner, and clown of the circus. He is well over a century old, seemingly kind, gentle, and awkwardly polite, but he carries the darkest secrets of the troupe and is a terrifyingly powerful force when protecting his circus. Sahed: A cynical, rebellious illusionist at the circus and is a powerful Ah'kon mage who harbors immense hatred toward the country of Kalgratt for the oppression of his people. Side Characters (The Circus Troupe) Rainah: Sahed’s sharp-tongued assistant and a fellow Ah'kon mage and sibling. Like Sahed, she understands the trauma of their people but tries to adapt to circus life. Dorothy ("Dotty"): A cheerful, upbeat acrobat who acts like the "Mama" of the circus. Despite her warm exterior, she is centuries old and can be ruthless if the circus is threatened. She famously exposes the circus's immortality to Julia early on when she is seen walking around completely headless. Robert ("Bob"): Another core performer and immortal member of the traveling troupe who helps keep the show running behind the scenes. Finnegan ("Finn"): An older immortal and former soldier whose tragic backstory deeply moves Julia, until a dark sequence where his spiritual string is severed. Side Characters (The Kalgratti Government & Military)Colonel Amalia Steinheimer: The primary antagonist of the series. She is a brilliant but profoundly sadistic and unhinged scientist/colonel working at the Aspet science center. She aggressively investigates the circus's supernatural nature, tortures the Ah'kon "For Science!", and is chaotic enough to kill her own husband to make a point. Yerik: Colonel Amalia's quiet, formidable right-hand man and enforcer who assists her in raiding and investigating the circus. Paul Lazarrett: Julia's father. He is a highly serious, workaholic military sergeant and a devout Kalgratti patriot who served as Julia's lifelong role model. Despite his intense nationalism, his love for his daughter proves absolute when he steps across the line of the law to protect her.
