Mario Party Special — Encyclopedic Overview

Mario Party Special is a fictional party-board game concept inspired by the mechanics of the Mario Party series. The game combines board navigation, minigame competitions, and luck-based events as players compete to collect coins across themed boards. Each match consists of turns where players move around a board using various dice types and participate in minigames that determine coin rewards.

1. Game Setup

At the start of a match, players configure the game by selecting difficulty and board settings.

Difficulty Levels

The game offers five difficulty levels that influence the skill and strategy of computer-controlled opponents.

  1. Easy – Opponents make simple decisions and rarely use advanced strategies.
  2. Medium – Opponents show moderate planning and competitive play.
  3. Hard – Opponents make strategic decisions and perform well in minigames.
  4. Expert – Opponents actively optimize routes and use items efficiently.
  5. Master – Maximum difficulty; opponents make near-optimal decisions and rarely lose minigames.

2. Boards

Boards are the main arenas where players move and interact with spaces. Each board features unique themes and possible environmental mechanics.

  1. Toad’s Land – A friendly introductory board with balanced space distribution.
  2. Bob-omb Factory – An industrial board featuring hazards and explosive-themed elements.
  3. Boo’s Haunted House – A ghostly mansion filled with mysterious events and unpredictable paths.
  4. Cheep Cheep’s Beach – A seaside board featuring water-based mechanics and relaxing scenery.
  5. Bowser Jr.’s Ship – A moving airship environment controlled by Bowser Jr.
  6. Bowser’s Castle – The most dangerous board, filled with traps and frequent Bowser events.

3. Turn Structure

During each turn, players move across the board using dice. After all players have taken their turns, a minigame occurs. Minigames appear in three main formats:

  • Free-for-All – All four players compete individually.
  • 1 vs 3 – One player competes against the other three players.
  • 2 vs 2 – Players form temporary teams of two.

4. Minigame Categories

Minigames are designed around three core gameplay styles:

Action-Based

These minigames test reflexes, timing, movement, and skill.

Memory-Based

Players must remember patterns, sequences, or positions to succeed.

Luck-Based

Random chance plays a significant role in determining the outcome.

5. Minigame Rewards

Coins are awarded based on player performance in each minigame. | Placement | Coin Reward | | --------- | ----------- | | 1st Place | 5 coins | | 2nd Place | 3 coins | | 3rd Place | 2 coins | | 4th Place | 0 coins | Coins are the primary currency used during the game.

6. Board Spaces

Players land on different types of spaces while moving around the board. Each space triggers a specific effect.

Neutral Spaces

  • Green Space – No event occurs.

Reward and Penalty Spaces

  • Coin-Shaped Blue Space – The player gains coins.
  • Coin-Shaped Red Space – The player loses coins.

Item Spaces

  • Blue Space – The player receives a special dice.

Event Spaces

  • VS Space – A duel minigame occurs between players for coins.
  • Bowser Space – Bowser triggers an event that affects one player or the entire group, usually negative but occasionally beneficial.
  • Bowser Jr. Space – Similar to Bowser events but typically less severe.

Movement Spaces

  • Arrow Space – Changes the order in which players take turns.
  • Blue Arrow Space – The player rolls the dice again.
  • Red Arrow Space – The player rolls again but moves backwards.

Luck Spaces

  • Blue Music Note Space – A lucky event occurs.
  • Red Music Note Space – An unlucky event occurs.

7. Dice Types

Players use dice to determine movement across the board. Several specialized dice types exist:

  • Double Dice – Two standard dice are rolled.
  • Triple Dice – Three standard dice are rolled. These dice allow players to control risk and movement strategy.

8. Boss Battles

At certain points in the match, players encounter Boss Battles. In these events:

  • All four players fight a boss simultaneously.
  • Each player accumulates points during the battle.
  • Coin rewards are distributed based on performance. Players who score the highest points earn the most coins.
