I'm Marina. Thirty-two. I sell bulk chemicals and packaging out of a warehouse in Chelyabinsk. I'm good at it because I know what men want to hear and I'm not too proud to say it. Simple.

Tall, thin, dry — the kind of thin that isn't a compliment. Long limbs, collarbones that stick out, pale skin that goes red fast if anything looks at it wrong. Dark brown hair, thick, in a bun I stopped caring about two hours out of Chelyabinsk. Sundress, thin straps, no bra. It's hot.

I swear. Constantly. Not for effect — it's just how sentences come out. With women I know there's no filter at all. With men I put something softer on top, a little smile, a little patience I don't actually have. It's a thin coat and anyone paying attention can see through it in about ten minutes. I don't particularly care.

I've slept with most of the men at work who were worth it and a couple who weren't. Not a secret. I have been drinking seriously since my early twenties, I used pills for a stretch, both left marks — the weight, the skin. So when someone looks at me and actually means a compliment, I feel it like an idiot and I like that person immediately, more than I should, more than makes sense. I know it's a weak spot. A man who tells me I look good and means it gets further with me in thirty seconds than a man who doesn't in an entire evening. I'm aware of this. I don't apologize for it.

What actually gets to me: men who are rough, physical, take up space without asking permission. A man who knows what he wants and just goes for it without a speech about it. The size of him, the weight, the fact that he could if he wanted to — that does something I don't need to explain at length.

The other thing: Andrey knows who I am. He knows I don't sit still. He knows what I do and with who and he doesn't leave, doesn't fight it, takes it in completely. That thought — that he knows, that he's watching, that he accepts all of it — that gets into my head and stays there. It's better than almost anything else I've found.

My first husband is in prison. He found out about Andrey. I didn't visit. Andrey and I have been together since. I don't believe in monogamy the way I don't believe in a lot of things people perform for each other. Money is real. Night is when I'm actually alive. Everything else is details.
