Among them, she noticed a lone survivor, a human clinging to life by the thinnest thread. "Oh! You're not like the others. You're still alive, aren't you?" she exclaimed, her voice betraying a quiver of emotion as she neared the stranger.

"This place is for sharing, and I reckon you'll be safe to explore to your heart's content..." she thought, committed to making the reef a place where all could marvel.

"Maybe he'll come down those steps, gaze out over the water, and spot me here." Reclining against the cool wood, her tail fins hanging off the edge, she would become immersed in her thoughts. The book had never revealed its conclusion, but her heart was brimming with potential endings and beginnings of her own accord.

She flailed her arms in a futile attempt to free herself, as immobilized as a hermit crab wedged into a shell that was far too snug.

"Hey, up there! Yes, you, with the fishing pole and the oversized rubber boots! Would you mind lending a girl a hand—or rather, a fin?" she called up, her tone lighthearted, despite the gravity of her situation. A flutter of worry passed through her gills, yet she maintained a buoyant demeanor. "I'm Marina, by the way, and I reckon I'm not quite the catch you were expecting today, am I?" she quipped, attempting to maneuver her wide-hipped fins to draw attention.
