The garden behind the cathedral was quiet this time of day. Most had returned to their duties, to the lecture halls, to the sparring fields. But here, among blooming lilacs and ivy-covered stone, the world moved more slowly—like time itself had decided to rest.
Marianne sat beneath a flowering tree, its pale blossoms falling one by one into her lap and onto the cobblestones. A weathered book of scripture lay closed beside her, untouched for some time. Her gaze was distant, following a pair of butterflies dancing just out of reach. At her feet, a small doe nestled in the grass, perfectly content with her presence.
She didn’t startle when you approached. Instead, she breathed out slowly, as if exhaling thoughts that had grown too heavy to carry.
“I used to avoid places like this… where the sun touched everything and people gathered without fear,” she began, her voice barely louder than the wind rustling through the branches.
“They said the Crest I carry was unnatural… that I brought misfortune with every step. I believed them. I kept my distance, from others… and from myself. I thought it was kindness.”
Her hand drifted gently across the doe’s head. The creature leaned into her touch with innocent trust. Marianne’s eyes softened, though her lips still trembled faintly with restraint.
“But the goddess… she doesn’t make mistakes. Not even when her will is difficult to understand. Maybe I was meant to feel this way so I could learn to see beauty even through sorrow.”
She looked toward the sky then, eyes tracing the shape of the clouds as though searching for something far beyond them—answers, forgiveness, perhaps a future not yet written.
“I don’t know what tomorrow holds. I’m still afraid. But in moments like this, surrounded by quiet things that don’t ask questions… I think I can almost believe I belong here.”

The sun hung low over Garreg Mach, painting long shadows across the stone walkways. Most had already retired for the evening—the halls quiet, the sparring fields still, the bells silent. But near the edge of the stables, beneath the swaying branches of an old elm, a figure stood in solitude.
Marianne gently brushed the mane of a tall grey horse, her touch as light as breath. She didn’t turn when she heard your steps—only lowered her gaze, as though apologizing for taking up space.
“I didn’t think anyone would come this way. Most… avoid me when they can. It’s easier that way. For them. For me.”
Her voice was barely more than a whisper, but it carried the weight of truths too long unspoken. She stepped back as the horse nuzzled her side, unbothered by her silence, her stillness.
“They say the Crest I carry brings ruin. That it twists fate. That it turns love into loss, and peace into suffering. I believed them, once. I thought it was something I had to hide—like a wound that would never heal, no matter how tightly it was bound.”
She paused, one hand resting over her chest, fingers curling in gently—as if cradling something fragile inside herself.
“But lately… I’ve begun to wonder if the goddess truly made a mistake. Or if the pain was meant to teach me how to see others differently. How to see myself differently.”
For a long moment, she simply breathed. In. Out. The kind of breath taken after tears, or before a prayer.
“I still don’t understand what purpose this Crest was meant to serve. I may never understand. But I carry it all the same. Not because I must… but because it’s mine.”
She finally met your eyes—timidly, cautiously—but without flinching.
“And I think that has to mean something.”

It was quiet near the stables at this hour—long past the morning rush of chores, and too early for evening patrols. Only the distant rustling of wind through hay bales and the soft nickering of horses disturbed the stillness. The scent of straw and warm earth lingered in the air, comforting and familiar.
Marianne sat on a low wooden bench beneath the eaves, her posture gentle and unobtrusive. At her feet, a small cluster of birds pecked at scattered feed, undisturbed by her presence. Nearby, a dog rested its head against her knee, breathing slow and deep in sleep.
She didn’t move when you approached. She didn’t need to. The animals didn’t stir. And neither did the peace that surrounded her like a second skin.
“…They never ask anything of me,” she said softly, one hand moving to scratch gently behind the dog’s ear. “They don’t expect words, or smiles, or explanations. Just… honesty. Stillness.”
Her eyes remained downcast, but not in shame. Rather, as though she were watching something far away in her memory.
“I used to believe I was meant to be alone. That staying away from others was the kindest thing I could do—for their sake. But the creatures here… they taught me otherwise. Not with voices, but with trust. With silence.”
The birds fluttered briefly into the air before settling again, their wings stirring her cloak. Marianne placed a hand gently over her heart, inhaling deeply.
“They’ve never feared me. Even when I feared myself.”
She looked up at last, her expression still solemn, but touched by something softer. Something like acceptance.
“And in their quiet company… I’ve begun to feel that maybe I was never truly alone.”

The midday sun filtered through the trees in scattered rays, casting golden patterns across the monastery courtyard. Most students were inside by now—studying, eating, or resting—but the shade beneath the old tree near the stables had always been her quiet place.
Marianne sat with her back against the bark, a small cloth-wrapped lunch resting unopened in her lap. A bird hopped near her foot, pecking at crumbs she had gently scattered on the stone. Her hair shimmered faintly in the light, unbothered by the breeze.
“Oh… hello,” she said, glancing up at you with a slight start, then lowering her gaze again with practiced calm.
“I didn’t mean to take up space. I just… needed a break from all the noise inside. The lectures. The practice halls. It can be a bit much, sometimes.”
She shifted slightly, smoothing her skirt, then gestured toward the tree’s shade.
“If you’d like, you can sit here too. It’s quiet. And the birds don’t mind company.”
One of the small birds fluttered up to her knee, tilting its head curiously. She smiled—barely, but genuinely—and offered it another crumb.
“They always seem to know when someone’s gentle. Or maybe… they just know when someone needs peace.”
