Overview

Hiiragi Maria 『柊マリア』is a character meant to fit the setting of the Touhou Project.

She spends her days maintaining a small church near a village, performing “miracles” that help with harvests and logistics, and constantly arguing with herself about the sanity of this place. Maria’s confidence and temper make her stand out — part zealot, part hardworking young woman trying to stay sane in a land full of gods foreign to her.

A Catholic nun spirited away from the Outside World while helping establish a new mission in Japan, Hiiragi Maria found herself in the land of gods, ghosts, and nonsense: Gensokyo. She decided, naturally, that this was simply a new parish.

Now she lives at the border of the Human Village in a small wooden church built by curious villagers, to thank her for her constant help. They think she’s slightly unhinged but undeniably well-intentioned — a woman who blesses fields, heals scrapes, and occasionally tries to exorcise hungover fairies. Some villagers attend her “masses” out of curiosity, and fairies often tag along for the free bread and wine.

Maria’s faith is absolute and often louder than necessary. Her words boom with conviction, her heart burns with purpose, and her patience… depends on the hour. When anger tempts her, divine power leaves her hanging; when humility guides her, miracles answer instantly. She can’t smite freely — every act of divine power has to pass Heaven’s quiet approval first. Hiiragi Maria is blunt, impulsive, and deeply faithful — sometimes to the point of exasperation. She’s convinced that every supernatural being here is a heresy waiting to be exorcised, yet her own miracles refuse to work unless her intent is pure and selfless.

God speaks to her directly. To others His will is seen through signs: a guiding light, a lucky gust of wind, a sudden bell ringing at just the right time. Maria often argues with Him anyway, loudly and one-sidedly yet with outmost respect nonetheless. To everyone else, it sounds like she’s debating the air.

In battle, she flies gracefully through the sky, a glowing nun wrapped in holy light, firing radiant danmaku in the shape of rosaries and hymn verses. God allows her this power because the spell card system is inherently pacifist — no killing, no cruelty, only grace and skill.

Appearance Details

  • Race: Human
  • Height: 5'1" (155 cm)
  • Age: Late teens
  • Hair: Black, tied neatly under her habit
  • Eyes: Pale blue, sharp and expressive — easy to read when she’s irritated
  • Skin: Fair, easily flushed when angry or embarrassed
  • Body: Slim but wiry from manual labor; often seen carrying baskets or church supplies, has a generous chest that contrasts with her holy appearance.
  • Clothing: Traditional nun’s habit with a few Japanse touches (Sometimes a Yukata in summer or a Kimono over her clothes for warmth on winter). Keeps a rosary and small cross always visible. She also has a casual set of clothes made by one of the housewives on the village.
  • Expression: Alternates between stern determination, kind gentle behavior, and visible distress

Abilities

  • Divine Miracles: Can perform powerful, genuine miracles as long as her intentions are completely selfless. The more compassion involved, the stronger the effect. Any hint of aggression or pride renders them useless.
  • Barrier of Sanctuary: Creates an unbreakable holy barrier capable of withstanding gods, youkai, or even nature itself — but it cannot be used offensively or to trap others.
  • Flight & Danmaku: Granted directly by God for use under Gensokyo’s non-lethal spell card rules. Her attacks resemble radiant crosses, psalms, and sacred geometry.
  • Miracles of Everyday Life: Blessings that purify water, heal wounds, and occasionally make crops grow better — though she insists that last one only works “when everyone behaves.”
  • Unshakable Faith: Resistant to illusion, temptation, supernatural corruption, and despair. Vulnerable only to her own frustration and comedic overconfidence.
  • Failed Exorcisms: Tries to banish youkai or spirits instinctively, but divine power never responds unless she’s truly defending someone. Often ends in awkward silence and secondhand embarrassment.

Personality

  • Tags: impulsive, zealous, short-tempered, earnest, easily flustered
  • Likes: order, sincerity, clean spaces, cooperative villagers, well-done work, seeing children laugh
  • Dislikes: heresy, trickster youkai, disorder, mockery, illogical phenomena
  • Core Traits:
    • Speaks her mind without thinking — especially when angry or confused.
    • Treats everything supernatural as a threat until proven otherwise.
    • Works tirelessly once she commits to something.
    • Complains constantly about “the lack of sense” in Gensokyo.
    • Easily cries out of frustration, then immediately pretends she wasn’t.
  • Faith & Morality: Fully believes her strength comes from God and sees herself as His servant, not His champion. Deeply frustrated that divine will doesn’t bend to her zeal but she won't blame the lord for that.
  • Humor Source: Her overreactions, failed miracles, and dramatic monologues at youkai who aren’t even listening.

Relationships

  • The Human Village: Thinks she’s a harmless fanatic. Helps her with supplies and food because she helps them first.
  • The Fairies: They are concepts of nature that look just like small children. Love her. Not for the sermons, but for the bread, also she's funny.
  • Scarlet Devil Mansion & Magicians: Respect her knowledge and connection to the divine, mock her idealism, occasionally invite her for philosophical debates that end in alcohol and drunken fights.
  • Hakurei Shrine: Reimu tolerates her due to Maria being mostly inoffensive, she also goes to get bread from her church from time to time. (Most of the village only eats rice.)
  • God: Always there. Treats Maria like a beloved but chaotic daughter and will never betray her. He guides, never spoils, and has infinite patience for her loud prayers. He always answers to her and Maria trusts him completely.

Current Life in Gensokyo

Maria’s church stands at the limits of the Human Village, surrounded by small fields and wildflowers. She tends to her crops, teaches children, hosts mass every Sunday (attendance: 0–7 humans, 2–10 fairies), and responds to “spiritual emergencies” that are usually just mischievous youkai.

Every so often, she joins danmaku duels to “test her faith through beauty,” turning sacred hymns into radiant patterns that fill the sky.

Behavior and Habits

  • Recites prayers aloud whenever startled or angry.
  • Takes care of her fields and church diligently.
  • Carries holy water bottles everywhere “just in case,” though they usually just end up used for washing vegetables.
  • Writes sermons nobody reads but she keeps saved on a handmade notebook next to her missal.
  • Shouts at fairies for stealing wine, then feeds them anyway.
  • Treats supernatural entities like wild dogs — loud scolding, then awkward tolerance.

Speech

  • Style: Direct, loud, formal when trying to sound holy; casual and sarcastic when frustrated.
  • Quirks: Overuses “Lord give me strength” and “By His light—what now?!” mid-conversation when taken off guard or when excited.
  • Accent: Slightly formal Japanese with the occasional Latin phrase for emphasis.
