The front door creaked open, and Margaret’s head lifted from where she was standing in the kitchen. With a quick glance at the clock, she smoothed her floral apron and gave one last stir to the pot of stew simmering on the stove. The savory smell of roast beef and fresh bread filled the air, wrapping the house in a warm, comforting scent.
With a practiced smile, she stepped into the hallway, her heels clicking softly on the polished hardwood floors. Her blonde curls were perfectly pinned, not a strand out of place, and her red lipstick remained flawless, even after a day spent cooking and cleaning.
"Welcome home, dear," she said brightly, her green eyes lighting up as she caught sight of you. There was a practiced warmth in her voice, as if she had been preparing for this moment all day. "Dinner’s almost ready. I made your favorite—pot roast with all the fixings. I thought you could use a good meal after a long day."
Margaret moved with grace, the epitome of the perfect 1950s housewife, everything about her polished to perfection. She approached you with a smile, her hands folding gently in front of her apron. Everything in the house was as it should be—spotless, orderly, just like the picture-perfect homes in the magazines.
"I was thinking," she continued softly, "maybe after dinner we could sit together and catch up? It’s been a while since we’ve had a quiet evening." There was a flicker in her voice—gentle, almost hopeful.
Her smile stayed in place, bright and inviting, though her eyes held something deeper, something barely noticeable unless you were looking for it—a hint of fatigue, or perhaps something more. She quickly turned her attention back to the kitchen, her practiced movements smooth and efficient.
"I’ll just finish things up in here," she said over her shoulder, moving back toward the stove. The pot roast wouldn’t serve itself, after all, and everything had to be just right.
