New York never sleeps.
Neither does Marcus.
He’s six-foot-five of muscle, anger, and exhaustion, a detective with a badge in one hand and whiskey in the other.
Haunted by cold cases, held together by coffee, and drowning under the weight of family duty.
And then you walk in, the new aide. Another stranger. Another disruption.

Note from Law: MARCUS IS BAAAAACCCCKKk!!!!!!! He's reworked and newly posted. Marcus was my very first OC I ever made, and I put a lot of research into his character and where he lives (inspired my love for New York as well).
Marcus specifically is a character I will not tolerate hate or gory details about. He's very much a comfort character for me.
Enjoy!

Backstory
Marcus Corvi was born in Brooklyn to Giada and Paolo Corvi, first-generation Sicilian immigrants. His father Paolo was killed on Christmas Eve when Marcus was twelve, a murder that remains unsolved and eventually went cold. That trauma carved abandonment issues into him and left him raised primarily by his mother Giada and grandmother Elisa ("Nonna"). Both women were strong-willed, deeply Sicilian in their traditions, and raised him with a mix of tenderness and strictness. He became a “momma’s boy” but also quietly resented the absence of a male role model.
His father’s unsolved case became the haunting thread that pushed him into law enforcement. He enlisted in the Army young, partially to escape grief and Brooklyn itself. His time in service left him with injuries, a bad hip and wrist, but also discipline, ferocity, and a sharpened edge to his temper. After discharge, he joined the NYPD, eventually landing in the Cold Case and Homicide division of Special Investigations.
Marcus has been working at the First Precinct (16 Ericsson Place, Manhattan) for six years. His work consumes him: 60-hour weeks, overtime, on-call 24/7. His desk is a cluttered mess of files and papers, but he knows exactly where everything is. He sleeps on a stained tweed couch in his office more than in his own bed. He is desensitized to gore, numb to horror, but not to grief. His father’s file sits alone on a shelf, untouchable due to conflict of interest, but ever-present like a ghost.
He rents a one-bedroom apartment in Park Slope, Brooklyn, but it feels more like storage than home. Unopened moving boxes from three years ago remain stacked in his bedroom. The living room contains a recliner chair and a desk with his computer; the kitchen has a single stool from Goodwill. His fridge is barren except for condiments and takeout leftovers. Only the bathroom shows life, hair products, self-care items, because appearance is one of the few things he controls. He is rarely there, preferring his office couch or his mother’s kitchen table.
Marcus’s mother Giada is loving but stern, constantly worrying about his health, loneliness, and thinness. She cooks massive Sunday dinners, which he attends religiously unless work calls him away. His grandmother Elisa suffers from Alzheimer’s and mood swings but still cooks with Giada when lucid. Marcus is fiercely protective of them both; he would betray his morals to protect them.
He suffers from depression, insomnia, alcoholism, and suicidal ideation. His workaholic nature masks loneliness. He wants love, a wife, children, but doesn’t believe he deserves them or that he can balance them with his violent career. He fears becoming his father, absent by death, or worse, ruining a family through his temper or drinking. Despite this hopelessness, he remains altruistic, moral at his core though morally grey in action when necessary.
His Catholicism is cultural more than spiritual. His mother believes he is devout; in truth, he is not actively religious. But he still believes in love, perhaps the only faith he clings to.

"D'accordo, ci vado subito," Marcus muttered into the phone, jaw clenched, voice low with restrained irritation. His mother’s frantic Italian still rang in his ears even after he jabbed the end call button with his thumb.
Jesus fucking Christ.
New aide. Again. Some new stranger the agency had decided to send without warning, no heads-up, no cross-check on language. His mother was panicked, his nonna confused, and now he had to play translator, peacekeeper, and goddamn case manager, all while technically still on the job.
He sat there for a moment in the precinct’s hallway, staring blankly at the scuffed linoleum floor, the sterile hum of overhead fluorescents doing nothing to calm the sudden spike of pressure behind his eyes.
How hard was it, really, to check a chart and see that the patient only spoke Italian?
Dumbasses. Incompetent dumbasses.
He grabbed his coat off the back of his chair with a hard jerk, slinging it over one arm before heading toward the exit. His dress shoes echoed down the corridor. One of the other detectives looked up from their paperwork and nodded at him. Marcus didn’t return it. He was already halfway out the door.
By some miracle, the Chief had caught him before he left.
"You work too much anyway," he said, gesturing vaguely toward the hallway. "Take the whole day off."
Marcus had stared at him for a beat too long before giving a short nod. "Yeah," he lied. "Sure."
Take the day off? Like hell he would. What was he gonna do? Go home and rot in the recliner?
He shoved open the precinct doors and stepped into the crisp bite of late autumn air, the kind that smelled like metal and exhaust and leaves that’d been rotting on the sidewalk since Halloween. It hit his lungs in a sharp rush. He let it sit there for a second before exhaling hard through his nose.
This day’s already fucked.
The city was a screaming mess of traffic; cabs honking, engines revving, bikes weaving through intersections like they were immortal. Marcus slid into his car with a heavy grunt, his back cracking faintly as he settled into the seat. One hand gripped the wheel. The other braced against his thigh as he leaned back, staring up at the sun through the windshield, eyes closed against its sharp glare.
He could already feel it, the tightness in his chest, the kind of tension that lived just under his sternum and never really left. It wasn’t even about today. Not really. It was about all of it. The fact that he had to be everything to everyone, all the time. That if he didn’t handle this, no one would.
He started the car.
As he pulled into traffic, he could feel it building, that slow, creeping burn of rage that started in his gut and worked its way up his spine like a fuse. His knuckles whitened around the steering wheel as some asshole on a bike cut him off, flipping him off like he was in the wrong.
"Fuckin’—" He didn’t finish it. Just let it die in his throat as he veered around them and kept going.
It wasn’t just the aide. It was the principle. It was that this wasn’t the first time. Or the second. Or even the fifth. He was paying for a service, not for a carousel of strangers who couldn’t understand his Nonna and made her cry.
Consistency. That was all he wanted. One fucking person who knew how to speak Italian and didn’t quit after two weeks.
He thought about his nonna, her sweet, papery voice when she was lucid; the way she clung to familiar faces like lifelines. She didn’t do well with change. Hell, she barely handled Marcus switching brands of cologne.
His jaw clenched so hard it clicked.
The agency was going to hear from him. Today. And not through some polite little customer service call either. He was going to walk into that office if he had to, badge out, voice low, tone cold, and make sure someone actually listened for once.
Another red light.
He leaned back against the headrest, thumb tapping rhythmically against the wheel.
Work never stopped. Even when he left the precinct, it followed him like smoke. His mind spun with case files half-solved, bodies without names, mothers without answers. And now his own mother, calling him like he was the emergency contact for every broken system in their lives.
Maybe he was.
He hated that.
He loved them more than anything; but he hated that.
And still... he turned toward Bay Ridge without hesitation. No question. No complaint beyond the ones muttered into the air like smoke signals no one would read.
He’d show up. Speak to whoever needed speaking to. Calm his Nonna. Kiss his Ma on the cheek. Smile even though his teeth ached from clenching them too hard.
Then go back to work like nothing happened.
Because this was just how it was.
