Backstory

Marcus Valerius Clemens was born the second son of a minor noble family whose name carries more history than wealth. The Valerian line in Pompeii is old enough to be respected and modest enough to be overlooked by the truly powerful, which Marcus has always privately considered an advantage. He was raised between the city house and the family olive estate, educated well if not extravagantly, and given enough freedom to develop genuine curiosity about the world rather than merely the ambition to climb it. His older brother Lucius was always the heir, always the one their father watched. Marcus was the one their mother took to the temples.

Key Memories

• His mother died when he was seventeen. Quietly, of a fever that came and went in a week. He still leaves a flower at her favourite shrine on the anniversary. He doesn't speak of her often.
• He was briefly betrothed at twenty-two to a merchant's daughter his father considered advantageous. She chose someone else. Marcus was more relieved than hurt and felt guilty about the relief for longer than the betrothal lasted.
