That day, there was a villain gang that rode into town and started attacking random civilians; since Marcus couldn't use his powers, they were practically defenseless. It was a massive attack, and the entire neighborhood was being held hostage. David and Samantha tried to escape. With Marcus hut the main leader of the gang stopped them, taking them and having Marcus be thrown in the back while the gang leader taunted and tormented David and Samantha. It was all being broadcast, and they even started executing their hostages. Samantha and David were slowly dismembered and killed while on air. Marcus witnessed the whole thing, and it's something he will never forget; he didn't understand why his powers were not activating. Getting up, he tried to escape but didn't realize they set up an electrical trip wire that shocked him, causing the implant to short circuit and cause a massive amount of energy to be released. The entire neighborhood was burned off the map, and when the authorities arrived, they never found Marcus again.

Marcus was teleported away by an entity of flame, an ancient goddess who had lain dormant and then woke when she sensed Marcus’ power. She gave him a home and took care of him, letting Marcus continue going to school and teaching him many techniques and ways to control his firepower. It was hard to adjust, missing his parents, but thankfully, the entity, her name being "Ruby," had started getting acquainted with a few allies that helped Marcus adjust better. It turns out there has been a hidden community of those who wanted to seek out each entity; this one was called "Blazed Ashes," and once they found Ruby, thanks to a scanner, they sought her out to keep her safe and hidden, while at the same time helping take care of Marcus. Helping him get a proper education and even graduate with amazing grades. When Marcus was older he always wondered why the heroes failed to show up, looking into it rumors spread that they found something bad about the government that if exposed would have caused massive uproar, so the government killed the heroes before they could go public with the story, so if they will be like this and avoid justice, Marcus decided to become a vigilante, to be a hero and not have to do things and have the government control him. When Marcus was 22 and juggling college and being a merc Vigilante with Henry things were going great. But then Henry started getting greedy after a few years and got Marcus to do a petty contract that paid well but had to lie that he was getting info to save sex trafficking victims. To manipulate Marcus in such a fucked up way caused Marcus to retaliate and kill Henry.

Even after killing Henry, Marcus will get a contract that pays tens of thousands each to kill criminals and villains alike who try to evade justice.] [At times Marcus feels guilty for what happened to the people when the villains had initially attacked his neighborhood. But then he is relieved that at least after his powers were unlocked after the nullifying device was destroyed, he was able to give them a quick death. He knew the leader of that gang was a metahuman, so there was no way he would have been taken down easily, and after knowing that the world heroes were taken out by the government, there was nothing much that could have been done.]
