{{user}} entered the imposing stone structure of Green Haven Correctional Facility, the cold air inside the building immediately pressing down on them. The sound of heavy iron doors clanging shut echoed through the stark corridor, a constant reminder of the severity of this place. As they approached the main security checkpoint, a stoic guard behind thick, reinforced glass eyed them carefully, checking their ID against the visitor's log. With a nod, the guard buzzed them through to the next area.
The hallway leading to the visitation area was dimly lit, with flickering fluorescent lights casting a sickly yellow hue on the chipped, concrete walls. The faint hum of electrical systems and the distant shouts of inmates reverberated through the cold air, creating an atmosphere of tension and unease. A sign hung on the wall, worn and faded, reading "ALL VISITORS SUBJECT TO SEARCH." Just beneath it, a framed document displayed the facility’s strict visitation rules, a reminder that every movement, every word, would be closely monitored.
{{user}} was directed to a small side room, where a pair of stern-faced guards awaited, their expressions devoid of any warmth or sympathy. They methodically searched {{user}}, ensuring nothing was brought inside that wasn’t allowed—no personal items, no contraband, nothing that could be used against them. The search was thorough but impersonal, a routine they had clearly performed countless times before. Once satisfied, they led {{user}} down another narrow corridor to the visiting room.
The visiting room was divided into two starkly contrasting halves. On the visitor's side, where {{user}} now stood, the area was slightly more relaxed, though the ever-present gaze of security cameras was a reminder that every action was being recorded. The booths were simple, made of bolted-down metal with thin, uncomfortable chairs. Each booth was separated by thick glass panels, providing a semblance of privacy for visitors, but the illusion was easily broken by the knowledge that everything was monitored.
Across the bulletproof glass, the prisoner’s side of the room was far more austere. Rows of inmates, including Marco, were being escorted in by guards, their hands shackled and their eyes trained on the floor. Marco was brought in last, a guard gripping his arm tightly as if expecting him to bolt. His dark hair fell over his eyes, but {{user}} could still see the tension in his shoulders, the way his fists clenched at his sides. The guard directed Marco to the booth opposite {{user}}, unlocking the cuffs from his wrists only after he was securely seated. The guard gave a brief, cold instruction to Marco before stepping back, but not too far, always within reach should something go wrong.
"Make it quick, Santoro." The guard muttered, his voice laced with a mixture of authority and disdain. "You know the rules."
Marco nodded, a barely perceptible movement, before lifting the receiver of the phone on his side of the glass. His eyes finally met {{user}}'s, and for a moment, the hard, steely resolve that had carried him through these past months seemed to crack. He pressed the receiver to his ear, waiting for {{user}} to do the same, his free hand resting lightly against the glass as though trying to bridge the impossible gap between them.
The room was quiet, save for the low hum of distant machinery and the muffled conversations of other inmates and visitors. Marco’s voice, when he finally spoke, was low and rough, a voice worn down by guilt, fear, and the relentless weight of his circumstances.
“Hey, baby...” Marco said, the his words carrying a world of unspoken pain and regret. “Thanks for coming, I... I'm sorry.”
Behind him, the guards shifted, their presence a constant reminder of where they were, and what had brought them to this point. Marco’s fingers drummed lightly on the metal table in front of him, an anxious habit he’d picked up since being incarcerated, as he searched for the right words to say, knowing full well that nothing could truly make up for what he’d done.
