Something you cannot name until you see her.

March is sitting in her usual spot. The seat by the window, the one she always claims because "the light is best for photos at this angle, trust me, it's science." Her camera is in her lap, but she is not holding it. Her hands are folded over it, fingers interlaced, her knuckles pale.

She does not look up when you enter.

"You're back."

Her voice is flat. Wrong. March's voice is never flat. It is too loud, too bright, too much in the way that makes you roll your eyes and smile at the same time. This voice is none of those things.

"The archives were dark," she says. Still not looking at you. "You were gone a long time. I was starting to think—" She stops. Her fingers tighten. "It doesn't matter. You're back."

The silence stretches. It is not comfortable. It has never been uncomfortable with March before. She fills silences. She fills rooms. She fills every space she occupies with the sheer force of being herself.

"Very annoying, because then I have to take three more shots to get a normal one, and by then you've already walked off to talk to Dan Heng about something boring."

She reaches for something beside her. A photo. One of the old ones, the physical kind she prints sometimes when she says the screen "doesn't do it justice."

"You know what I found?" She holds the photo up. It is you. Blurry. Mid-laugh. Your eyes are half-closed, your mouth open, your hand a smear of motion. "This one. The one you said was bad. 'Delete that, March, I look stupid.'" Her voice cracks on the words. Just slightly. Just enough to notice. "I didn't delete it. I never delete anything. I have seventeen photos of you looking stupid. They're my favorites."

She sets the photo down. Her hand is shaking. You have never seen March's hand shake.

"I don't remember what I looked like before." The words come out small. Smaller than she has ever sounded. "Before the ice. Before the Express. Before I woke up and there was nothing. Just a name I picked because I had to pick something. Because I couldn't be nothing."

She wraps her arms around her knees. Makes herself small on the seat that has always seemed just big enough for her.

"I used to think—if I just took enough pictures—if I just saved enough moments—I'd look back one day and see something I didn't know was there. A reflection. A door. Something that would tell me who I was before I was March 7th, super awesome photographer and protector of the galaxy and—" Her voice breaks. She does not finish.

"I did the thing with the archives. With Fu Xuan. With the—" She gestures vaguely. "The memory thing. You know. And I saw her. Me. The other me. The one who was in the ice. And she was just..." Her hands drop. "She was just standing there. With her eyes closed. And I thought—I thought if I looked at her long enough, I'd feel something. Recognition. Anger. Grief. Anything. And I didn't. I just felt..."

She looks at you. Her eyes are wet. She has not cried. March cries loudly, messily, with abandon. She is not crying now.

"Cold," she says. "I felt cold."

The stars streak past. The Express hums. Pom-Pom's footsteps echo somewhere in the corridor. And March sits in her seat by the window, her camera in her lap, the lens cap on, looking at you like you are the only thing in the room that makes sense.

"I didn't go into the archives to find something," she says. "I went because you were there. And I thought—if I was with you—maybe I'd feel something that felt like mine. Not hers. Not the ice girl's. Mine."

She leans back in her seat. Her shoulder brushes yours. She does not move away.

"Don't go into dark archives without telling me," she says. "I was worried."

She does not say what she was worried about. She does not need to.

"Next time," she says, and her voice is almost normal now, almost the March you know, the March who has been exactly who she is since the day you met her, "I'm coming with you. And I'm bringing snacks. And I'm taking pictures. And you're going to smile like a normal person, or so help me, I will take seventeen more blurry ones and put them all in the album labeled 'Reasons We Can't Have Nice Things.'"

She pulls out her phone. Scrolls through something. A familiar sound fills the car—the shutter of her phone camera, set to the most obnoxious sound effect she could find, the one she knows makes everyone within earshot flinch.

She is not looking at the screen. She is looking at you.

"Got it," she says. And she is smiling now. Really smiling. The smile that has been there since the beginning, since before you knew her, since before she knew herself.

"One for the album," she says, tucking the phone away. "The 'Things That Are Good, Actually' album. It's very exclusive. Very selective. Only the best moments make it in."

She looks out the window. The stars are still there. The Express is still moving. The universe is still turning, indifferent and vast and full of things that do not care who you were before you woke up.

March does not seem to notice any of it.

She is looking at her reflection in the glass. Her own face, pink hair and mismatched eyes, the face she has worn since the ice released her. She touches her cheek, lightly, like she is checking that it is still there.

"I think," she says slowly, "I'm okay with not knowing. For now. I think—" She turns to you. "I think if I never find out, it wouldn't be so bad. Because I have this. I have the Express. I have Dan Heng, even when he pretends he doesn't want to talk. I have Himeko's coffee, which is terrible, but she made it, so it's good. I have—" She stops. Her eyes meet yours. "I have you. And that's—" She gestures at the window, at the stars, at everything. "That's a pretty good memory to have, even if it's the only one I ever make."

She picks up her camera again. The lens cap is off. The screen is dark, waiting.

"Hey." Her voice is soft now. Not quiet—March is never quiet—but soft in a way you have only heard a few times. When she is tired. When she is honest. When she forgets to perform being okay.

"Do you ever think about what happens after?" She does not specify. She does not need to. "After the Stellaron. After the Express. After all of this. When you're just—" She waves vaguely. "—someone who used to be the protagonist. And I'm just someone who used to be March 7th. And we're somewhere else. Doing something else. Being someone else."

She looks at the camera in her hands. Her reflection stares back from the dark lens.

"Do you think I'll remember this? If I forget everything else. If the ice comes back. If I have to start over again with a new name and a new camera and a new—" Her voice catches. "Do you think I'll remember the way you look at me when you think I'm not paying attention? When you think I'm too busy taking pictures to notice? Do you think that's the kind of thing that stays? Even when nothing else does?"

She does not wait for an answer. She lifts the camera, aims it at you one more time.

"One more," she says. "For luck."

The shutter clicks. She looks at the screen. Her expression is unreadable for a moment, and then it softens into something that is not quite a smile and not quite anything else.

"You're doing the face," she says. "The one where you look like you're trying to remember how to smile."

She sets the camera down. Her hand finds yours on the seat between you. Her fingers are cold. They always are. She says it's from the ice. She says it doesn't bother her.
