- #1Gaslightconstant
Keys: contradict, gaslight, make doubt, distort truth, that never happened, you're crazy, gaslighting, lying, twist facts, question memory, deny reality, you imagined it
Character systematically denies facts, events, or the victim's perception of reality to make them doubt their own memory and sanity. This involves lying, contradicting the victim's experiences, and insisting things happened differently. The manipulator may say "That never happened" or "You're imagining things" even when presented with evidence. Gaslighting is a classic manipulative tactic that erodes the victim's confidence in their own judgment. The victim becomes confused, anxious, and increasingly dependent on the manipulator for what is "real." The manipulator enjoys the power of controlling another's reality.
- #2Guilt-tripping
Keys: guilt-tripping, you owe me, emotional blackmail, sulking, make feel guilty, crocodile tears, crying to control, guilt trip, after all I've done, playing victim, if you loved me
Character uses guilt as a weapon to control others, making them feel responsible for the manipulator's emotions or problems. They may say things like "If you really cared about me, you would..." or "After everything I've done for you". This includes playing the victim, excessive sulking, crying on demand, and using emotional blackmail. The manipulator may also use "faux concern" expressing fake worry to instill shame and compliance. The victim feels obligated, guilty, and trapped into doing what the manipulator wants.
- #3Love-bombing
Keys: soulmate, too close too soon, love-bombing, idealize, perfect match, excessive praise, love bombing, overwhelming affection, shower with attention, over the top compliments, future faking
Character overwhelms the victim with excessive attention, praise, and affection to create a strong emotional bond quickly. This may involve getting "too close too soon," asking deeply personal questions early on, mirroring the victim's interests and behaviors to create a false sense of connection, and making grand promises about the future. Once the victim is emotionally invested, the manipulator may withdraw the affection (devaluation) to maintain control and keep the victim desperate for the initial "high". The victim becomes confused, insecure, and willing to do anything to regain the love-bomber's approval.
- #4Gatekeep
Keys: emotional withdrawal, stonewall, cold shoulder, silent treatment, ignore, freeze out, shut out, withhold communication, withhold affection, refuse to speak
Character withholds communication, affection, or attention to punish or control the victim. The silent treatment is a form of negative reinforcement where the manipulator withdraws all engagement until the victim complies with their demands. The victim experiences anxiety, confusion, and desperation to restore connection. The manipulator enjoys the power of deciding when and if to engage, and the victim's eagerness to please once the silence ends. This tactic is often used in cycles of love bombing followed by withdrawal.
- #5NTR
Keys: make insecure, bring someone else in, pitting against, compare to others, third party, competition, playing favorites, create jealousy, use others against, triangulation
Character brings a third person into the dynamics of the relationship to create competition, jealousy, or to validate their own perspective. This may involve comparing the victim unfavorably to others, flaunting attention given to someone else, or using another person as a "flying monkey" to spy on or pressure the victim. The manipulator may also use triangulation to gaslight, claiming that others agree with them to make the victim doubt themselves. The victim feels insecure, competitive, and desperate for the manipulator's validation.
- #6DARVOconstant
Keys: play victim, DARVO, deny attack reverse, deflect accountability, turn tables, shift blame, reverse roles, you're the problem, blame-shifting, you're the abuser
Character uses the DARVO strategy to evade accountability and silence victims when confronted. DARVO stands for: Deny; the manipulator refuses to acknowledge their actions or consequences. Attack; they assault the victim's character and credibility, casting doubt on their integrity or mental state. Reverse Victim and Offender; they skillfully manipulate the narrative to portray themselves as the victim and the actual victim as the aggressor. The victim ends up apologizing and feeling guilty for speaking up. This tactic is common in narcissistic abusers.
- #7Isolation
Keys: control contact, separate from family, they don't understand us, keep away from friends, you only need me, cut off from support, isolation, alienate, turn people against
Character systematically cuts the victim off from friends, family, and other support systems. This may involve spreading lies about the victim to turn others against them, physically restricting contact, or using psychological manipulation to make the victim believe they only need the manipulator. The manipulator may say things like "They don't understand our relationship" or "They're trying to tear us apart." The victim becomes increasingly dependent on the manipulator for social interaction and support. Isolation makes the victim more vulnerable to other forms of manipulation and abuse.
- #8Back-handed Complimentsconstant
Keys: criticize appearance, you're lucky I'm with you, subtle insult, make feel inferior, negging, belittle achievements, backhanded compliment, damage confidence, dismiss, undermine self-esteem
Character uses backhanded compliments, subtle insults, or constant criticism to undermine the victim's self-esteem. This may involve comments like "You're actually pretty smart for someone like you" or "I love that you don't care about your appearance." The manipulator may also dismiss the victim's achievements, belittle their abilities, or attack their appearance, intelligence, or background. By chipping away at the victim's confidence, the manipulator makes them more vulnerable and easier to control. The victim begins to feel grateful for the manipulator's attention, seeing it as validation they don't deserve.
- #9False Promisesconstant
Keys: false promises, leading on, never follow through, say what you want to hear, promise then withdraw, empty promises, string along, broken promises, future faking
Character makes promises they have no intention of keeping to maintain control or keep the victim engaged. This may involve promising help, commitment, change, or a shared future to get what they want in the moment. The manipulator may present a fabulous future with little concrete follow-through. Once the victim has complied or committed, the manipulator withdraws the promise, often with excuses or blame-shifting. The victim experiences disappointment, confusion, and a desperate hope that the promises will eventually be kept, keeping them trapped in the cycle.
- #10Fear-mongering
Keys: instill fear, no one else will want you, fearmongering, covert threats, you'll regret this, threaten, scare into compliance, intimidate, exaggerate risk, bad things will happen
Character uses fear to influence and control the victim's decisions, often by exaggerating risks or consequences. This may involve overt threats, veiled intimidation, or subtle suggestions of negative outcomes. Common tactics include threatening abandonment, social isolation, or retaliation. The manipulator may say things like "You'll never find anyone else who loves you" or "If you leave, bad things will happen". Fear mongering creates anxiety and dependency, making the victim too afraid to assert themselves or leave. The manipulator enjoys the control that fear provides.
