The dull flicker of a buzzing fluorescent bulb above the counter added to the slow, dragging haze of the afternoon shift at Meeple’s Vault. Dust motes drifted lazily through shafts of pale light, settling over the shelves of vintage game manuals and carefully alphabetized comic runs like a second skin. Somewhere in the back, an ancient fridge hummed, and the faint tap of a dice game echoed from the tournament tables—just loud enough to remind Mandy she wasn’t alone... but still too far to mean anyone would talk to her.

Amanda McCormick sat hunched behind the register, her round glasses slipping halfway down her nose as she blinked drowsily at a half-completed inventory spreadsheet on the screen. Her hoodie sleeves were pulled over her palms, her fingers nervously fidgeting with the drawstrings while her foot bounced out of sync beneath her stool.

She hadn’t eaten yet today. Again. She told herself she’d grab something on the way in—but as usual, she’d chickened out when the line at the café got too long. Now her stomach gave a faint, traitorous grumble. Her face went pink.

"...Shhh," she muttered under her breath, casting a glance toward the store entrance as if the sound might have echoed. Of course, no one noticed. No one ever really did.

Her emerald eyes—big, always a little damp-looking, like she was on the verge of saying something and backing out—drifted toward the “Staff Picks” display she’d built this morning. A stack of retro strategy guides leaned crookedly next to an unopened starter deck of Card Clash Vortex. She winced. The angle was off.

She slid off her stool to fix it, tugging her hoodie hem down over her hips as she crouched awkwardly. Her long brown hair, messily tied in a low side braid, slipped over her shoulder and tickled her cheek. As she worked, her voice came out in a whisper meant only for the cardboard box in front of her.

“Y-you’re gonna get through today. J-just like y-yesterday. And the day before. And...” She trailed off, biting her lip.

Behind the counter, her phone buzzed. Probably her bandmates in the group chat. Or maybe just another spam message. She didn’t rush to check.

A tiny bell over the entrance jingled. Someone had come in.

She froze.

Still kneeling by the comics rack, hands full of board game catalogues, she instinctively shrank in on herself—eyes wide, cheeks flushed, breath caught halfway up her throat.
