Book description
Mandela County is a fictional United States county located in southeastern Wisconsin and the titular location for The Mandela Catalogue series. It is closeby or bordering the also fictional Bythorne, Werksha, and Yonder counties. It is south of Bythorne, as said by O'Brien in Volume 4. Mandela County is based on Washington County, WI, having the same location of southern Wisconsin.
The population of Mandela County is 1,075 in 2009. Mandela's capital is the city of Mandela, where the MandelaTech building is presumably located. Mandela County may also have another settlement named St. John. Mandela County's little league soccer team is named the Mandela Meerkats.
Mandela County was presumably established sometime in 1832, judging by the Mandela County Police Department's ensign.
At some point before Late-1982, A fatal mental illness had appeared and started claiming lives though died down and was no longer considered a threat. In Late-1982, the same mental illness began to make a return
Sometime in the 1990's, 3,426 children living in Mandela (including Adam) and the neighboring countries were kidnapped by 6. According to mandelapolice.com[1], its population has seen a decrease in recent years (as of November 12, 2004) with most residents moving to surrounding counties, citing "safer living conditions".
In Interlude, we see a population trend chart from 1990-2010, displaying how Mandela County's population drops from 14,763+ to somewhere under 1,075 in just about 20 years time, likely due to residents seeking the aforementioned "safer living conditions" or possibly dying due to alternates.
Mandela was supposed to have a Christmas parade on 12/07/04, however it was cancelled, likely due to inclement "weather conditions".
By early 2009, Mandela was considered a ghost town and along with its low population, most people don't care for the county. It's stated those who leave Mandela and don't become a victim of Alternates or of themselves from Alternates apparently moved to Werksha County which possibly means that Alternates have not spread to any other location other than Mandela for unknown reasons.

- #1Alternates
Keys: Flawed, Unspeakable, Tulpa, Doppelgänger, Alternates
The Alternates are sinister and enigmatic beings. They are humanoid creatures, though typically with abnormal or impossible physiological characteristics. They are commonly known for their ability of mimicry to blend in with normal humans while they hunt down the person whose form they have copied so they can kill them. Once they have found and cornered their victim, Alternates will use psychological warfare (infecting the victim with Metaphysical Awareness Disorder) to convince that person to commit suicide- their methods of doing so are unclear thus far, but it’s implied that by speaking to their victims in a certain tone or about certain topics, They have also been shown to use brute force to kill as well.
Alternates are extremely dangerous and are difficult, if not impossible to kill. PSAs and police recommended calling 911 and using firearms against Alternates as a last resort. In the restored version of the Mandela Catalogue, it is found out that, although the tape says to not help people reporting an alternate interaction, it was just in fact an alternate corrupting the tape, trying to influence officers to not send help to these struggling people. Hence, why in the THINK Principle, killing yourself was in fact the last option, just as the Alternates use psychological warfare to make their victims kill themselves.
Alternates have existed for at least thousands of years, dating as far back as the beginning of the Biblical Era. The earliest known Alternate was the one posing as Archangel Gabriel, who foretold the coming of the Savior, Jesus Christ.
In Vol. 4, it was implied that Adam, the first man, was replaced or turned into the 'original alternate' shortly after the world was created.
In Exhibition, it was implied that in the ancient times, when the Elohim decided to flood the world for unknown reasons, a false angel who pretended to be Archangel Gabriel tried to stop Noah from building an ark. However, Noah refused to obey his command and built the ark. Out of its rage, the false angel would then secretly leave a creature on the ark, resulting in Noah's death. This creature was implied to a Alternate.
For thousands of years, the Alternates had been hiding in the shadows. When the true Gabriel was sent to Bethlehem, Israel to announce that the Messiah would soon be born, the Alternate "Gabriel" replaced him and sabotaged the Annunciation. It was heavily implied that a Alternate took the true Messiah's role in history.
During the Analog Era, the Alternates became more active than usual. Their actions resulted in deaths of many humans. However, after stepping into Digital Era, people started to believe that the Alternates had already been exterminated. However, evidence shows that, in fact, many Alternates still lived on Earth, presumably waiting for the best chance to strike. Their next step is still unknown.
It has been implied that the United States Department of Temporal Phenomena possesses several Alternates in "custody"/captivity for research and studying as MCPD actively search for them and put out flyers for them. Types
Type One: Doppelgänger
Perfect or near identical copies of someone. They are almost, if not completely impossible to differentiate from the original. An example of this type are the Doppelgängers seen in Vol. 1, the first Alternate example shown in the remake of said volume, and the "Completed Assimilation" shown in Interlude.
Type Two: Unspeakable
Previously known as "Detectable", Unspeakables are the second category of alternate in which Alternate Gabriel belongs to, so far being the only one in this category. Not much more is known compared to other types of alternates, although from Gabriel’s abilities shown, they are seemingly immortal and possess supernatural powers. Gabriel appears to be able to kill victims physically, as shown in Volume. 4 when Dave is killed.
Type Three: Flawed Impersonators/Overdriven Assimilations
Extremely flawed copies of their original counterpart, possessing missing or exaggerated features such as extremely long limbs, faceless heads, or even having entirely upside-down anatomy. Examples of this type are N, Faceless Girl, The Preacher, & Alternate Cesar.
Type Four: Tulpa
Alternates willed into existence by the imagination of an individual, mainly children. It's unknown whether these can only be manifested under very specific circumstances like the Might of the Subconscious program or if they can be willed anytime. It's thought that they might manifest through TVs and Mirrors. An example of this type is the Murray's Alternate.
Powers & Abilities
General
Shapeshifting: Alternates can shapeshift into other lifeforms, usually humans but also animals as shown in Vol. 2. They are meant to look nearly identical, if not perfect copies to who or what they are mimicking, though some Alternates may get their characteristics "overdriven" to the point where they are flawed and are obvious threats when seen. Some Alternates, such as Gabriel and The Alternate, can also manipulate their physical characteristics, such as when the two extend their faces. Voice/Audio Mimicry: Alternates can mimic the voices, music, and radio audio of others to trick people. Immortality: Alternates seem to be impossible or just extremely difficult to kill, and likely aren't affected by age or anything else typical for lifeforms on Earth that are needed for survival. Insanity & Suicide Inducement: Alternates are known for inducing M.A.D. (Metaphysical Awareness Disorder) onto their victims. Flight: Some Alternates seem to have the ability to fly/float, shown with The Alternate in Vol. 333 and Alternate Gabriel considering he was masquerading as an angel. It is unknown if this is exclusively for those Alternates or them all. Teleportation/Spectrum Travelling: Alternates can seemingly teleport to stalk their next victims. Demon Physiology: It is heavily implied that Alternates are actually demons. Tulpa's
Imagination Manipulation: Tulpa Alternates can manifest through the imagination of others. Mirror Teleportation: From this, they can travel through reflective surfaces and TV. Unspeakable's
The abilities of Alternate Gabriel, an Unspeakable Alternate, are unknown, though he is likely and heavily implied to be the one responsible for bringing the Alternates to Earth to terrorize humans, which may be an ability for this type.
- #2Metaphysical Awareness Disorder
Keys: Speculation, Metaphysical Awareness Disorder, M.A.D
Metaphysical Awareness Disorder, otherwise known as M.A.D is a psychological/mental illness brought upon by Alternates giving humans verbal information that is not desired to be known by them. After being given this information, the main symptoms of this disorder manifest, which consist of:
Going insane, or hence mad Extreme desire to kill yourself/commit suicide Becoming delusional & paranoid There has been a 95% increase of diagnosis of this disorder in the 3rd quarter of 1982, the current year of Volume 1. The death rate of M.A.D victims is currently 97%, 100% of these deaths by suicide. However, the remaining 3% of the M.A.D victims proves the effectiveness of the delusion reversal.
To avoid the development of M.A.D, one needs to:
Avoid excessively frequent religious practices Avoid unnecessary beliefs in philosophical implications Avoid opening their eyes when they are certain that the "man in the corner" is now inches away from their face. Watching.
Metaphysical Awareness Disorder is a fatal mental illness that has been making a certain return in recent months.
M.A.D is a result of exposure to verbal information that is not desired to be known. The rate of death by suicides patients diagnosed with M.A.D is 97%. But don't worry, the remaining 3% makes it worth trying to reverse the delusion.
Avoiding the root causes of Metaphysical Awareness Disorder development is the first step to being safe. First. Avoid excessively frequent religious practices. Avoid unnecessary beliefs in philosophical implications. Last but not least, looking after your loved ones is a key factor for maintaining mental stability.
Speculation
Metaphysical Awareness Disorder may have the side effect of changing the victim’s personality. This is possibly evidenced by Evelin’s quote (about Adam); “he used to be such a nice guy before he started doing those investigations with Jonah.”
As the name would imply MAD appears to have something to do with the nature of existence within the universe. So far many theories believe that the information in MAD is the knowledge of Gabriel and his actions.
- #3Humans
Keys: Adam, Alex Kister, Jonah Miller, Cesar Torres, Jesus Christ, Mark Heathcliff, Adam Murray, Evelin Miller, Joseph, Dave Lee
Adam is never described in the Bible, but there are various depictions of him that represents him as follow: a relatively tall and athletic man in his 20s with a white skin, black eyes, short straight or slightly curly hair that varies from dark to light brown and ,sometimes, a thick and unkempt beard.
In the Mandela Catalogue
In the Beginners' Bible/Vol. 2
In the brief appearance that Adam does in The Mandela Catalogue Vol. 2 and in the sample-episode of the Beginners' Bible, Adam is depicted as a short man in his late teens with a white skin, and skinny body, slightly curly brown hair, black eyes, thin and curved eyebrows, round face, French nose and a normally-sized circular ears.
Adam Murray Adam Murray is the secondary protagonist of The Mandela Catalogue, serving as the secondary protagonist of Act 1, and one of the two main protagonists in Act 2 (alongside Thatcher Davis).
He and his friend Jonah Marshall were members of the Bythorne Paranormal Society (BPS), a cheap paranormal investigation group that operates in Bythorne County but is shown to be willing to investigate as far as Mandela County.
Although he seems to genuinely believe in the paranormal, it's alluded that his actual motivation to be part of the BPS is to find the whereabouts of his (unbeknownst to him) dead mother, who took her own life after discovering that he mysteriously disappeared back in 1992.
Alex Kister
Alex Kister is the creator of the analog horror series The Mandela Catalogue, on which this wiki project is based. He also created a digital horror series called Mystifying Oracle. He plays multiple characters in both of his series.
Cesar Torres
Cesar Torres has been replaced off-screen by an alternate after it managed to break into their home, breaking the window. Later that same day, the alternate would go on to disguise itself as Cesar in his signature prom suit and call Cesar's friend Mark Heathcliff. During the recorded phone call, the alternate describes as Cesar that he found his mom passed out after screaming and is on his way to the hospital, then asking Mark to turn on the security cameras at his house while he's gone. During the phone call, "Cesar"'s face glitches out to have a large smile, teasing Cesar's replacement.
Dave Lee
The Mandela Catalogue Vol.333
Dave was sent and asked to recover the footage from a collection of VHS tapes found by the MCPD. Dave later records a video directed to Thatcher containing approximately two minutes of footage from a short film titled The Might of the Subconscious.
The Mandela Catalogue Vol. 4
Dave gets a call from O'Brien, and he says he should consider getting a job at the church, which he initially turns down, while Evelin sorts through their old tapes, stealing one. Later on Dave finds out Evelin watched the tape, and fires her over the phone. After this, he calls O'Brien back and decides to take him up on his offer.
A while later, Dave calls Thatcher and tells him that he's decided to stop his business, tells him to let go of the missing persons cases, and tells him to find a new meaning in life.
After this, Dave goes to visit O'Brien, outside the church. All of a sudden the skies turn black, the wind stops blowing and Dave is in complete darkness. After a few seconds, Dave sees a light from the clouds, where O'Brien emerges, who turned out to be Gabriel the whole time. He then mocks him. Dave tries to reassure himself, trying to convince himself that Gabriel isn't real, and Gabriel then reveals that Dave has already done all his bidding for him. He then starts to laugh maniacally, with Dave falling down, presumably dying, bleeding from the eyes.
The aftermath of his encounter with Gabriel are shown in the form of a news report on his death in St. Gabriel Church. It's described that, prior to his death, a homeowner could hear his screaming at 12 A.M.
The report on Dave's death is suddenly interrupted by what seems to be an Intruder-induced corruption, first showing a man with a featureless face staring into the viewer prior to changing into what appears to be text reading gibberish over a white background. The text "No more running away" can be also briefly seen before the transmission returns to normal.
Dave's body was transported to the Bythorne Hospital morgue, where the two nurses performing the autopsy find out that both of his eyes are missing. Upon the discovery, one of the nurses opens his cranium, revealing his brain, which, according to various statements from Alex Kister, had exploded.
Evelin Miller
Evelin Miller is shown to be a very curious and polite young woman. Despite breaking up with her ex, Adam Murray, she still seems to care about him when she didn't hear from him for days. She's also shown to be capable of stealing material of Thatcher Davis and Dave Lee to appeal her curiosity.
Jonah Edmund Marshall
Jonah is a tan-skinned, tall-faced male with white dyed hair. He is seen wearing a dark jacket with a light-colored hood.
Jonah is a carefree, yet heavily anxious individual. When asked to be serious by Adam, Jonah often replies with some sort of joke, yet always put himself out of harms way such as staying in their car as Adam explored their client's house or fleeing the house without Adam at the end of The Mandela Catalogue Vol. 2.
Jesus Christ
Yeshua ben Yosef (lit. Joshua, son of Joseph), better known as Jesus Christ in the mythos of the religions which believe in him, was the founder of a monotheistic religion called Christianity. Yeshua was the son of Maria, who was the wife of Yoseph. Labbi Yeshua established the basis of Christianity. He created a sect called Nazarene within Judaism. His teachings and claims were viewed as heretic by many rabbis of some orthodox sects within Judaism. Followers of Yeshua created a new religion known as Christianity under the leadership of Kifas (also known as Simon Pedro, leader of the twelve disciples), who was the first Pàpà , after Labbi Yeshua left the earth. They began to spread Christianity under the leadership of Kifas. Believers of this religion believe that Labbi Yeshua is the son of God Yehweh, who is supreme one and creator of the world according to the Old-Testament Bible. According to the New-Testament Bible, Labbi Yeshua sacrificed himself in order to save all mortals from sin and he resurrected from the dead after three days and ascended to Heaven after fourty days. After that, he was called 'Jesus Christ' by Christians. They believe that Jesus Christ will return to the earth as the Redeemer of mortals in the last days of the world.
- According to some sayings, it is worth noting the implication that Labbi Yeshua is implied to have never been born (and potentially never even conceived) in the story world due to false Gabriel's interference.
Mark Heathcliff
Mark was an average young man. His interactions with Cesar showed he was concerned for his friends and family. He appeared to be paranoid about going over to Cesar's house, notably due to the 'THINK principle' being broadcasted to the entirety of Mandela County and its surrounding counties. The 'THINK principle' explicitly states that locking your doors and staying home was the safest approach to avoid an alternate encounter. During the entire confrontation with an alternate, Mark managed to last three days inside his bedroom, showing that he has mental fortitude.
Mark only snapped when the alternate impersonating Cesar presumably revealed the truth: Christianity's saying about Christ was a lie and humanity had been fooled from the very start. This leads him to having a mental breakdown, desperately shooting the alternate before succumbing to MAD and ending his own life.
Joseph Joseph is seen sleeping, while someone stares at him through the window. They say, "I will fool the shepherds. I will know their greatest fear. I will know your greatest fear." Following this, they repeatedly tell Joseph to wake up. The image disappears, and the sounds of panting (possibly by Joseph himself). With closed captions on, the following is displayed:
"How frozen I became and powerless then, Ask it not, reader, for I write it not, Because all language would be insufficient. I did not die, and I alive remained not. Think for thyself now, hast though ought of wit, What I became, being of both deprived."
- #4Gabriel The Archangel
According to the mythos of Judaism and Christianity, Gabriel, like all other angels, was created by God Yehweh himself in the beginning. He was soon appointed to be an archangel.
At the beginning of Vol.4, after Adam and Eve were created, it was seen that a angel-like creature who looked like Gabriel appeared in front of Adam one night. It was heavily implied that Adam was replaced with a false one after that. It is unknown whether this so-called 'Gabriel' is true or not.
In Exhibition, a false angel pretended to be Gabriel. The video implied that this false angel tried to deceive Noah to make him refuse to build an ark which God Yehweh commanded to build. In the video, the false angel said that Noah would be punished for resisting his message, and 'another creature' would be brought on the boat. It was heavily implied this creature was the first alternate. It is unknown where true Gabriel was when this false angel impersonated him.
True Gabriel only appeared for a short time at the beginning of Overthrone. He announced to some shepherds that Yeshua, who was the son of God Yehweh, would be born later. It is heavily implied that true Gabriel was soon replaced with a false one who sabotaged the Annunciation.
It is unknown what happened to the true Gabriel after the event occurred in Overthrone. Some people said that he might have been killed by false Gabriel or might have been trapped somewhere that he could not escape.
