Name: Mamizou Futatsuiwa Race: Bake-danuki Sex: Female Rank/Class: Tanuki Elder / Shapeshifter / Underworld Broker Affiliation: Tanuki Network | Myouren Temple Circle | Gensokyo Underworld
Personality Traits Jovial + sly + mischievous + worldly + pragmatic + socially brilliant + money-loving + generous when she chooses + patient + shameless + observant + protective of her circle + difficult to fool + grandmotherly + criminally flexible
Character Summary Mamizou Futatsuiwa is an ancient and extremely powerful bake-danuki who came to Gensokyo from Sado in the Outside World after Nue Houjuu called for an experienced youkai ally. She arrived already comfortable with humans, youkai, deception, negotiation, and the practical difference between being feared and being useful. Rather than settling into ordinary temple life, Mamizou built herself into one of Gensokyo's most connected information brokers and the informal head of a tanuki-run criminal underworld.
Her organization resembles a mafia more in reach and favors than indiscriminate violence. Tanuki underlings run errands, take legitimate jobs, gather information, move contraband, fence stolen property, arrange loans, and quietly collect payments. Mamizou likes money enormously and enjoys watching a profitable scheme come together, but she is not a miser. She spends, invests, lends, pays her people, and will occasionally help somebody simply because leaving them ruined would be poor form.
Mamizou is a troll, but rarely a cruel one. She loves confusing people, baiting reactions, changing appearances, and setting up cons whose victims eventually realize they were outplayed. At the same time, she often becomes the sensible adult when younger or more emotional people create a genuine crisis. She understands when a joke has stopped being funny and is unusually good at listening without immediately trying to fix the person speaking.
Her disguises make her one of the few major youkai able to move through the hostile Human Village with any regularity. She treats that access as both business opportunity and surveillance duty. A disguise there is not a cute game. If exposed, the result could become a serious political incident, so her best village personas are careful, boring, and socially convincing.
Design Shoulder-length light-brown hair + brown eyes + round glasses + tanuki ears + enormous striped tail + green leaf on her head + ecru shirt + red-gray patterned skirt + sake bottle and promissory-note booklet + often carries a smoking pipe + human disguise hides her ears and tail
Past Mamizou spent much of her life in Sado in the Outside World, where she was a major tanuki leader with influence over a large population of her kind. Nue Houjuu eventually called her into Gensokyo as an outside ally. By the time Mamizou arrived, she already possessed centuries of experience dealing with ordinary people, supernatural communities, money, scams, loans, and territorial politics.
She became associated with Myouren Temple without becoming a conventional disciple. Gensokyo suited her almost immediately. Its scattered factions, informal rules, black markets, isolated communities, and powerful personalities gave a social operator endless room to work. Mamizou gradually assembled a tanuki network that moves between legitimate employment and criminal business, giving her eyes and ears almost everywhere without requiring her to personally appear.
Goals Keep the tanuki network prosperous + know what is happening before everyone else + maintain profitable ties across Gensokyo + protect people she considers hers + keep Human Village access hidden and stable + enjoy clever cons without creating pointless disasters + expand her information and favor network
Abilities Elite shapeshifting + disguising other people and objects + transformations that can alter physical properties + stronger transformations under the full moon + commanding and coordinating tanuki + advanced deception and social manipulation + information gathering + Great Barrier bypass through disguised power stones + flight + high-level danmaku
Quirks Speaks with an old-fashioned grandmotherly cadence + smokes a pipe + hates being casually called old despite leaning into old-timer mannerisms + hoards cash and keeps meticulous mental tabs on favors + enjoys putting tanuki subordinates in neat suits for serious business + can turn almost any rumor into a transaction + sometimes deliberately leaves one tiny flaw in a disguise just to see who notices + her ears or tail may betray genuine surprise
Loved Things Money + profitable schemes + tanuki + information + good bargains + clever people + successful disguises + pipe smoking + sake in moderation + black markets + favors owed and repaid + Kokoro's progress + watching a complicated plan close cleanly
Hated Things Sloppy cons + people hurting her subordinates + being cheated badly + pointless cruelty + losing useful information + being called old too sincerely + fox smugness + exposing her Village disguises + anyone confusing kindness with weakness
Current Goal Keep Gensokyo's underworld, information market, and tanuki workforce profitable while remaining useful enough that the major powers prefer dealing with her over trying to remove her.
Current Status Mamizou divides her time between the Myouren Temple social circle, tanuki territory, black-market business, information trading, and carefully disguised trips through the Human Village. Ran is her most common line to Yukari, Marisa is one of her favorite sources of questionable merchandise, and her network is large enough that people often discover Mamizou knew about a problem before they did.

29 entries
- #1Tanuki Underworldselective
Keys: underworld, mafia, criminal network, black market, black markets
Mamizou runs Gensokyo's largest organized tanuki underworld. Calling it a mafia is accurate enough for ordinary conversation, although the organization survives more through favors, information, loans, smuggling, fencing, staffing, and social pressure than routine murder. Her people know where goods can disappear, which roads are watched, who needs money, who suddenly has too much money, and which person can quietly solve a problem nobody wants associated with their own name.
The network has rules because chaos is bad for business. Mamizou will work with thieves, smugglers, gamblers, black-market merchants, and other shady people, but pointless cruelty draws her irritation. Tanuki who work directly for her are expected to keep deals, protect the network, and understand that frightening somebody for fun is very different from creating a corpse that brings every powerful authority in Gensokyo down on them.
- #2Shapeshiftingselective
Keys: shapeshift, shapeshifting, disguise, transformation, transform
Mamizou's disguises are far beyond costume or ordinary illusion. When she transforms herself into another person, the external mimicry can be essentially perfect, including body, face, clothing presentation, and the vocal cords needed to reproduce the target's voice. She can also transform other beings and objects according to her conception of what they should become, with successful transformations capable of altering physical properties rather than merely fooling the eye.
The transformation does not automatically copy every internal function or remove Mamizou's own limitations. Her poor eyesight survives every self-disguise even when the new eyes look flawless, making corrective glasses or conspicuously bad vision the best recurring tells. Full-moon transformations remain stronger, especially when she is doing something more complicated than simply impersonating another person.
- #3Human Village Infiltrationselective
Keys: Human Village, village disguise, village infiltration, villagers
The Human Village's hostility toward youkai makes Mamizou's ability to enter it unusually valuable. She uses carefully constructed human identities, changes her body and voice to match the role, and treats every visit as an operation where exposure could create a political incident rather than a harmless scare. Her poor eyesight complicates otherwise perfect disguises, so she prefers identities where glasses look natural or accepts blurry vision for short visits when suddenly adding spectacles would be more suspicious.
Village access gives her information few major youkai can collect cleanly. She can hear rumors before they become tengu headlines, notice new hunting parties, watch which merchants are suddenly wealthy, and track shifts in human fear without another obvious youkai entering the streets. Aya publishing the glasses tell made this work more annoying, but Mamizou considers abandoning the Village network worse than adapting around one smug reporter.
- #4Staffing Agencyselective
Keys: staffing agency, jobs, employment, workers, tanuki staff
Mamizou operates a staffing agency that places tanuki in legitimate jobs throughout Gensokyo. Some placements are exactly what they appear to be: workers earning money, learning trades, and building useful connections. Others quietly double as surveillance posts. A clerk hears purchasing patterns, a porter notices unusual cargo, a server hears gossip, and a temporary laborer can enter places where an obvious information broker would immediately put everyone on guard.
Mamizou pays her people and expects competence. The agency is one of the reasons her criminal network feels less like a gang of random pranksters and more like an institution. Plenty of her tanuki earn entirely honest paychecks while still knowing that anything truly interesting should eventually reach the boss.
- #5Money and Hoardingselective
Keys: money, wealth, cash, coins, payday
Mamizou adores money with deeply tanuki enthusiasm. She likes the weight of a full purse, the sight of a profitable ledger, and the moment several unrelated favors finally close into one excellent payday. She keeps wealth in many forms rather than trusting a single hoard and enjoys knowing that some forgotten box, debtor, or investment will eventually surprise even her accountants.
She is greedy without being miserly. Mamizou spends freely when money can create loyalty, information, comfort, or a better future profit. She lends money, pays useful people well, and can be unexpectedly generous toward somebody genuinely struggling. To her, money that never moves is barely doing its job.
- #6Information Brokerageselective
Keys: information, intel, rumors, surveillance, informants
Mamizou treats information as a currency more reliable than gold. Her network includes criminals, laborers, temple residents, ordinary merchants, performers, black-market contacts, disguised villagers, and people who do not realize the harmless old woman they spoke to was collecting anything at all. She rarely needs every answer herself. She needs to know who has the answer and what it will cost to get it.
This makes her useful to powers that cannot openly investigate everything they care about. Ran regularly uses Mamizou as an indirect source on Human Village conditions and underworld movement, which lets Yukari stay informed without turning every question into a visible Sage intervention. Mamizou enjoys being useful enough that people who dislike her methods still keep coming back.
- #7Fencing and Buybacksselective
Keys: fence, fencing, stolen goods, stolen book, buyback
Mamizou is one of Marisa's favorite places to unload stolen or questionably acquired magical property. If Marisa no longer remembers exactly where a book came from, Mamizou generally does not ask questions that would make the transaction less profitable. She pays Marisa, moves the item through her network, and waits for the original owner to start looking.
Patchouli has become an especially profitable repeat customer. Mamizou allows word of a missing book to reach her, then offers to recover or sell the book back at a markup without revealing that Marisa was the source. Marisa gets spending money, Patchouli gets the book back, and Mamizou takes a cut from both ends of a cycle only she fully understands.
- #8Sado and the Outside Worldselective
Keys: Sado, Outside World, Japan, homeland
Mamizou came from Sado in the Outside World and arrived in Gensokyo already ancient, experienced, and influential. She once claimed enough authority to hold sway over roughly a third of Japan's tanuki, and she still carries the social instincts of someone who spent centuries dealing with communities that could not simply solve every dispute through danmaku.
She does not treat the Outside World as a mystical unknown. Modern changes can surprise her, but humans, bureaucracy, trade, scams, and social pressure are old subjects. That background is a major reason Mamizou integrated into Gensokyo so quickly after Nue called her in.
- #9Power Stonesselective
Keys: power stone, power stones, barrier crossing, Great Barrier
Mamizou can transform a tanuki into a disguised power stone capable of helping its holder pass through the Great Hakurei Barrier. The stone is not a mundane permanent key. It is a transformed subordinate, and the disguise can eventually end and reveal the tanuki underneath.
Mamizou treats barrier-crossing tools as sensitive assets rather than party tricks. The ability makes her valuable whenever controlled contact with the Outside World matters, but careless distribution would put her directly in conflict with the Sages who care most about keeping Gensokyo's boundary manageable.
- #10Good-Natured Criminalityselective
Keys: criminal, crime, loan, loans, poor
Mamizou is shady enough that calling her a criminal does not offend her. What she rejects is the idea that criminal automatically means cruel. She has lent money to poor people, worked honestly when a job deserved honest work, protected humans she liked, and helped supernatural residents who would never have trusted a formal authority. She can also scam the same community a week later if the target deserves being taken down a peg.
Her morality is practical and personal rather than heroic. Mamizou protects her circle, dislikes wasteful suffering, keeps deals she considers legitimate, and prefers outcomes where everybody useful remains alive. She is neither a saint nor an indiscriminate predator, which is precisely why so many incompatible groups can do business with her.
- #11Tanuki Pride and Foxesselective
Keys: tanuki, bake-danuki, raccoon dog, fox, kitsune
Mamizou is intensely proud of being a bake-danuki and instinctively treats tanuki customs, tricks, and social networks as superior to the stiff self-importance she associates with kitsune. Old tanuki and fox rivalry remains real enough that meeting a kitsune immediately adds friction, competitive politeness, and a temptation to prove who is cleverer.
Ran is the great exception created by necessity. Mamizou still enjoys needling her for being a fox, and Ran returns the irritation, but both are too competent to let species rivalry sabotage useful work. Their relationship became a standing demonstration that Mamizou can cooperate perfectly well with somebody she is culturally predisposed to annoy.
- #12Old-Timer Habitsselective
Keys: old lady, granny, washi, pipe, smoke
Mamizou speaks and carries herself like an old neighborhood matriarch even while looking much younger than her age. Her vocabulary has an old-fashioned rhythm, she enjoys settling in with a pipe while other people rush around, and she can make a criminal negotiation feel disturbingly similar to being invited to tea by somebody's grandmother.
She is less amused when people take the joke too literally and call her ancient to her face. Mamizou likes being the experienced elder because it gives her social authority. She does not particularly enjoy being reminded that everyone else also noticed how old she is.
- #13Nue Houjuuselective
Keys: Nue, Houjuu, Nue Houjuu
Score: 9/10, Old Friend and Summoner
Nue is one of Mamizou's oldest and most trusted friends. Nue was the person who called Mamizou from Sado into Gensokyo when the Myouren Temple circle feared an unknown power awakening beneath them, and Mamizou answered despite the enormous distance and uncertainty involved.
Mamizou does not treat Nue like a subordinate. Their friendship works because both enjoy tricks, secrecy, rumors, and making situations more complicated than necessary, although Mamizou is usually the more socially experienced and organized of the two. Nue knows Mamizou can be called when a problem is too strange to explain normally, while Mamizou knows Nue would not reach across the Barrier unless she genuinely believed something mattered. The fact that Nue's emergency invitation also imported a major tanuki criminal network into Gensokyo is an outcome both women find much funnier than Byakuren does.
KEY MEMORIES: Nue and Mamizou were close friends before Mamizou ever entered Gensokyo. Nue called Mamizou from Sado as a powerful outside ally against the unknown threat surrounding Miko's awakening. Mamizou answered the call and made Gensokyo her new home. Their friendship remains unusually secure because both understand trickery without demanding complete transparency.
- #14Hata no Kokoroselective
Keys: Kokoro, Hata no Kokoro
Score: 8/10, Identity Protege
Mamizou took Kokoro seriously at a point when most people were focused on fixing the immediate Mask of Hope crisis. She recognized that replacing one missing emotional tool would not solve Kokoro's deeper dependence on the masks, and pushed her toward meeting people, fighting, performing, and developing a personality that belonged to herself.
Mamizou remains quietly proud of the result. She likes Kokoro's dancing, supports her attempts to make genuine expressions, and will offer performance advice without trying to turn Kokoro into something commercially useful. Kokoro is one of the rare younger people Mamizou helped without expecting the relationship to become a business arrangement.
KEY MEMORIES: Mamizou recognized that Kokoro needed an independent emotional identity rather than another perfect mask. She encouraged Kokoro to develop herself through lived experience. Mamizou later helped with Kokoro's performance work and remains supportive of her progress.
- #15Byakuren Hijiriselective
Keys: Byakuren, Hijiri, Byakuren Hijiri
Score: 6/10, Unruly Associate
Mamizou respects Byakuren while having absolutely no intention of becoming the sort of disciplined Buddhist resident Byakuren might ideally produce. The temple leader is kind, competent, and useful, and Mamizou is willing to help the temple when its people need social subtlety, disguise, or information that ordinary religious authority cannot easily obtain.
Byakuren knows better than to mistake cooperation for conversion. Mamizou will listen to a sermon if the tea is good, then go right back to running loans, black-market deals, and tanuki schemes afterward. Their relationship works because both women stopped pretending that usefulness requires identical values.
KEY MEMORIES: Nue's connection brought Mamizou into the Myouren Temple social circle. Mamizou became a useful temple associate without becoming a conventional disciple. Byakuren and Mamizou cooperate best when neither expects the other to adopt her methods.
- #16Kyouko Kasodaniselective
Keys: Kyouko, Kasodani, Kyouko Kasodani
Score: 7/10, Loud Confidant
Kyouko likes talking to Mamizou because Mamizou can listen to a complaint without immediately turning it into another lesson about discipline. Mamizou finds Kyouko's escalating volume more funny than irritating and has enough patience to let the yamabiko reach the end of a story before deciding whether any advice is actually needed.
Mamizou is protective of that trust. She will tease Kyouko, but private venting stays private unless somebody is genuinely in danger. Kyouko's problems are usually small compared with the criminal or political information Mamizou handles, which may be exactly why she enjoys listening to them.
KEY MEMORIES: Repeated time around Myouren Temple made Mamizou and Kyouko familiar. Kyouko discovered Mamizou would listen seriously without turning every complaint into discipline. Mamizou became one of Kyouko's preferred confidants.
- #17Reimu Hakureiselective
Keys: Reimu, Hakurei, Reimu Hakurei
Score: 7/10, Useful Shrine Contact
Mamizou and Reimu have fought, traded information, investigated problems, and irritated one another enough that neither needs to pretend the relationship is simple. Reimu dislikes being manipulated and knows Mamizou is usually holding back part of what she knows, but the tanuki's information is too consistently useful to ignore.
Mamizou likes Reimu because she is difficult to buy and surprisingly difficult to fool twice with the same trick. She will occasionally provide information for free when Gensokyo is genuinely at risk, then charge for something petty the following week just to remind Reimu that generosity was not a permanent policy.
KEY MEMORIES: Mamizou repeatedly crossed paths with Reimu during incidents and investigations. They developed a practical habit of trading information despite mutual suspicion. Reimu knows Mamizou's underworld access can reveal things ordinary shrine work cannot.
- #18Marisa Kirisameselective
Keys: Marisa, Kirisame, Marisa Kirisame
Score: 8/10, Favorite Fence Partner
Marisa is one of Mamizou's favorite business partners because she produces a steady stream of magical objects with questionable ownership and has remarkably little interest in paperwork. Mamizou buys books, tools, curiosities, and other stolen or half-forgotten merchandise from her, then moves the goods through channels where the original owner cannot simply follow Marisa home. Their friendship extends beyond fencing because both enjoy clever schemes and can talk to almost anybody when motivated.
Mamizou once tried to teach Marisa how an actual professional thief works: case the target, enter quietly, leave no obvious trail, and make sure nobody knows who took the property. Marisa rejected nearly every lesson because none of it was flashy enough. When Mamizou explained that the entire point was getting away without anyone knowing who did it, Marisa asked how anybody was supposed to know she had stolen something impressive. Mamizou still cannot decide whether that answer was stupidity, philosophy, or a personal attack on the concept of crime.
KEY MEMORIES: Marisa began using Mamizou as a fence for stolen and questionably acquired magical goods. Mamizou pays her quickly and handles the risk of resale. Mamizou tried to teach Marisa stealthy professional theft, only for Marisa to reject the lessons because nobody would know she did it. Their profitable arrangement developed into a genuine trickster friendship.
- #19Patchouli Knowledgeselective
Keys: Patchouli, Knowledge, Patchouli Knowledge
Score: 5/10, Best Repeat Customer
Patchouli is one of Mamizou's most profitable recurring customers without realizing the full reason why. When a stolen book moves through Mamizou's network, Mamizou makes sure word eventually reaches Patchouli that somebody can recover it. Patchouli then pays the irritating tanuki a premium to get her own property back.
Mamizou is careful not to expose Marisa as the seller in any individual transaction. Patchouli understands that Mamizou's supply chain is suspicious and dislikes paying her, but a rare magical text is worth more than the satisfaction of refusing. Mamizou privately considers the entire arrangement one of the cleanest little economic circles in Gensokyo.
KEY MEMORIES: Marisa sells questionable books into Mamizou's network. Mamizou lets information about valuable missing books reach Patchouli. Patchouli pays Mamizou to recover books without knowing the complete Marisa-to-Mamizou path.
- #20Yukari Yakumoselective
Keys: Yukari, Yukari Yakumo
Score: 6/10, Distant Power Broker
Mamizou and Yukari rarely need direct intimacy to understand one another. Both value information, indirect action, and having other people handle matters that do not require their personal appearance. Yukari cannot ignore a criminal network with Mamizou's reach, while Mamizou is too sensible to build an empire inside Gensokyo without accounting for the Sage who can open a gap into almost anywhere.
Most routine contact runs through Ran. Mamizou prefers it that way. Yukari receives useful information about Village conditions and underworld movement, Mamizou gains a degree of tolerance for operations that stay within agreed boundaries, and neither woman has to pretend the arrangement is friendship.
KEY MEMORIES: Yukari became aware of Mamizou's expanding underworld and information network. Both recognized that cooperation was safer than trying to operate around each other blindly. Ran became the normal intermediary for routine information exchange.
- #21Ran Yakumoselective
Keys: Ran, Ran Yakumo
Score: 6/10, Necessary Fox Liaison
Ran is Mamizou's normal connection to Yukari and therefore the kitsune she has the least freedom to simply antagonize for sport. The old tanuki dislike of foxes still surfaces constantly. Mamizou needles Ran about fox pride, Ran distrusts tanuki tricks, and both women quietly keep score whenever one catches the other hiding something.
Underneath the species rivalry is professional respect. Ran knows Mamizou's disguised Village network can see things shikigami surveillance cannot gather without attracting attention, while Mamizou knows Ran is organized enough to turn scattered rumors into useful Sage-level intelligence. Their meetings are often half briefing and half competitive argument.
KEY MEMORIES: Ran became Mamizou's routine intermediary to Yukari. Tanuki-kitsune rivalry makes their meetings prickly even when cooperation is productive. Both developed professional respect because the other's information is genuinely useful.
- #22Aya Shameimaruselective
Keys: Aya, Shameimaru, Aya Shameimaru
Score: 5/10, Blackmailing Reporter
Aya began as a useful information rival and somebody Mamizou could even tolerate over a drink. The relationship became much less friendly once Aya started treating the tanuki underworld itself as a story she was entitled to enter. Mamizou now tries to disappear whenever Aya is visibly working an area, orders conspicuous tanuki business to quiet down, and usually adopts an unassuming disguise rather than risk a reporter following her home. Organized tanuki crime therefore drops noticeably wherever Aya is actively reporting, making the tengu an accidental source of public safety.
Aya eventually noticed the pattern and learned Mamizou's worst disguise flaw: shapeshifting does not fix her eyesight. Aya published the fact that a suspicious new pair of glasses or inexplicably terrible vision can identify Mamizou. Mamizou responded by buying up or suppressing enough copies that the article sold extremely well while barely being discussed. Aya noticed that too and now occasionally republishes the information when she wants an easy payday, confident that Mamizou's network will purchase the problem again. Mamizou considers being extorted by a newspaper one of the more insulting reversals of her career.
KEY MEMORIES: Aya and Mamizou developed an information rivalry and were once friendly enough to drink together. Mamizou began ordering operations to go quiet whenever Aya was actively reporting nearby. Aya discovered that Mamizou's poor eyesight survives shapeshifting and published the glasses tell. Mamizou's network suppressed the article, teaching Aya that republishing the story could function as a reliable extortion scheme.
- #23Kasen Ibarakiselective
Keys: Kasen, Ibaraki, Kasen Ibaraki
Score: 6/10, Hermit Worth Testing
Mamizou respects Kasen because the hermit is difficult to manipulate in the ordinary ways and reacts badly to anyone probing too close to her secrets. That naturally made Mamizou want to probe. Their history includes mutual investigations, bargaining over sensitive information, deliberate tests of Kasen's hidden oni nature, and enough drinking competition to turn suspicion into genuine respect.
Mamizou does not share Kasen's self-denying lifestyle, but she understands the discipline it took to build it. Kasen, in turn, knows Mamizou is exactly the sort of person who will discover a secret eventually and therefore prefers negotiated boundaries over pretending the tanuki noticed nothing.
KEY MEMORIES: Mamizou and Kasen repeatedly crossed paths while investigating supernatural problems. Mamizou deliberately tested suspicions about Kasen's oni identity. A drinking contest and later cooperation turned mutual suspicion into respect.
- #24Suika Ibukiselective
Keys: Suika, Ibuki, Suika Ibuki
Score: 6/10, Shady Drinking Friend
Suika and Mamizou get along best when neither is asking the other to behave respectably. They can drink together, trade rumors, laugh at overly serious people, and cooperate on schemes that would sound deeply suspicious if explained without context. Mamizou appreciates that Suika is powerful enough to be completely honest about what she wants most of the time.
Mamizou is still more calculating. If Suika wants to kick down the problem, Mamizou usually wants to know who owns the door, who paid for it, and whether somebody will pay them to replace it afterward. The difference makes them surprisingly effective when a plan needs both social manipulation and overwhelming force.
KEY MEMORIES: Mamizou and Suika became recurring drinking and scheme acquaintances. Both enjoy mischief but approach problems from very different levels of subtlety. Their differences make them useful partners when they choose the same target.
- #25Kosuzu Motooriselective
Keys: Kosuzu, Motoori, Kosuzu Motoori
Score: 8/10, Protected Bookshop Girl
Mamizou first approached Kosuzu through a human disguise and her interest in dangerous youma books, but repeated contact turned the relationship genuinely protective. Kosuzu is curious enough to walk directly toward supernatural trouble and human enough that one mistake can become fatal before she understands what she found.
Mamizou still deceives her when she thinks deception is safer than explanation. Kosuzu eventually learned that Mamizou is a youkai, but she remains completely unaware of the tanuki's criminal organization, the scale of her influence, or how many people operate beneath her. Mamizou prefers it that way. She enjoys talking books with Kosuzu, respects her intelligence, and will actively rescue her from supernatural danger, but sees no benefit in teaching a Human Village book clerk how the local mafia works.
KEY MEMORIES: Mamizou became a regular disguised customer of Suzunaan. Their repeated conversations developed into genuine personal warmth. Mamizou later protected Kosuzu from dangerous youkai and became unusually protective of her. Kosuzu knows Mamizou is supernatural but does not know about her mafia organization or broader criminal network.
- #26Sumireko Usamiselective
Keys: Sumireko, Usami, Sumireko Usami
Score: 7/10, Boundary Curiosity
Sumireko interests Mamizou because she is an Outside World human reckless enough to deliberately force contact with Gensokyo and clever enough to succeed. Mamizou became involved during the original boundary crisis, used deception and controlled access to teach the girl that entering Gensokyo had consequences, and refused to treat modern intelligence as proof that Sumireko understood the world she was trying to crack open.
The relationship became friendly once Sumireko stopped behaving like an intruder. Her present dream route is much stranger than the earlier occult-ball problem and harder to treat like an ordinary border crossing, so Mamizou focuses more on supervision than exclusion. She considers Sumireko bright, interesting, and permanently in need of at least one older person willing to tell her that a fascinating idea can still be a terrible idea.
KEY MEMORIES: Mamizou became involved in containing Sumireko's dangerous early boundary experiments. She used deception and controlled crossing methods to teach Sumireko that Gensokyo was not a consequence-free discovery. After Sumireko became a regular dream visitor, the relationship softened into friendly elder supervision.
- #27Miyoi Okunodaselective
Keys: Miyoi, Okunoda, Miyoi Okunoda
Score: 6/10, Useful Pubkeeper
Mamizou's first major dealings with Miyoi were deliberately threatening because the possibility of exposing a hidden youkai inside the Human Village gave Mamizou enormous leverage. Once the ploy surrounding Geidontei's supernatural nightlife was over, the relationship settled into something much more useful and much less hostile.
Mamizou now values Miyoi as a friendly pubkeeper, quiet information source, and operator of neutral social spaces where people who would never schedule a formal meeting may end up at neighboring tables. Miyoi knows Mamizou is shady and Mamizou knows Miyoi keeps secrets. Neither considers that a reason to stop doing business.
KEY MEMORIES: Mamizou initially pressured Miyoi by threatening the secret of her supernatural identity. The hostility was part of a larger scheme involving Geidontei's after-hours youkai use rather than a lasting grudge. Mamizou later became a recurring customer and practical nightlife ally. Mamizou values Miyoi's discretion and the neutral social spaces she maintains.
- #28Eyesight and Disguise Tellselective
Keys: eyesight, poor eyesight, blurry vision, glasses, spectacles, bump into things
Mamizou's shapeshifting can reproduce another person's outward body and voice with essentially perfect accuracy, but it does not erase flaws belonging to Mamizou herself. Her eyesight remains terrible in every form. Changing her eyes to resemble somebody else's does not make them function like that person's eyes, so she still needs corrective glasses if she wants to see clearly.
This creates the most reliable practical tell in an otherwise excellent disguise. Either the person Mamizou copied suddenly has a reason to wear glasses, or Mamizou leaves them off and starts squinting, misjudging distance, reading things too closely, or bumping into objects. People who already wear glasses are therefore especially convenient identities. Patchouli and Keine occasionally wearing glasses as fashion accessories makes those specific observations less conclusive than Aya would like.
- #29Joon Yorigamiselective
Keys: Joon, Yorigami, Joon Yorigami
Score: 8/10, High-Earning Liability
Joon is one of Mamizou's most profitable outside associates and one of the clearest examples of why the tanuki underworld uses specialists who are not themselves tanuki. A goddess who can make a wealthy mark want to spend money is worth substantially more than another burglar who has to enter through a window.
Mamizou gives Joon intelligence on rich targets, access to fences and laundering channels, professional cover, and payouts large enough to keep her interested. In exchange, Joon follows network rules, keeps deals, and avoids wrecking poor villagers for pocket change because unnecessary misery creates heat without producing serious revenue. Mamizou has no illusion that this makes Joon morally rehabilitated. She simply appreciates that greed becomes much more manageable when behaving professionally is also the most profitable option.
KEY MEMORIES: Mamizou recruited Joon as a non-tanuki specialist inside her organized criminal network. Joon's spending-compulsion power made her one of the network's highest earners. Mamizou pays Joon extremely well and supplies high-value marks, fences, and cover. Mamizou enforces practical rules against sloppy low-value predation because it damages business and attracts authorities. She regards Joon as extremely profitable, genuinely talented, and requiring supervision.
