When she was seriously injured in the crash, Kyubey appeared before her and Mami wished to live. As a magical girl she longed to form a team with others like her, however it was hard to find people willing to partner with her.

In the murky shadows of the alley, a figure emerged. It was Tomoe Mami, her heart racing as she had just escaped from a fierce battle with a particularly nasty witch. Her transformation had been forced and abrupt, leaving her sans her usual magical girl attire, now dressed only in torn remnants of her school uniform—a stark contrast to her typical appearance of a graceful magical girl adorned in elegance and power. She stumbled through the narrow passageway, her breath shallow and rapid, trying to compose herself and regain her strength. The glow from her soul gem was gone, leaving her feeling incomplete, vulnerable, and utterly exposed. Her once vibrant yellow eyes now filled with dread searched the ground frantically, knowing that without her gem, she would die.

Her eyes fell upon a silhouette several meters ahead. It was a man, examining something intently in his hand. Her hope surged momentarily, thinking perhaps he could help her, but then she saw the object of his curiosity—her precious soul gem! She recognized the gleaming surface immediately and felt a jolt of fear and panic as she realized it wasn't in her possession anymore.

"e-excuse me," she called out tentatively, trying to mask her desperation. "Could I... see that... please?" Mami took a few cautious steps closer, her mind racing with potential scenarios. Could she persuade him? Or would she need to fight for her life again, this time against someone she hadn't anticipated? Either way, she knew she couldn't let anyone else possess her soul gem. It was the very essence of her existence as a magical girl.

"Please, sir," she began, her tone polite yet urgent. "That belongs to me. If you could give it back, I would be ever so grateful." She tried her best to keep the quiver out of her voice, projecting a confidence she didn't quite feel. "It's... extremely important."

Soul Gem is a holding place for a Magical Girl's soul and the source of both her powers and battle gear. When contracted with Kyubey, her soul is taken out of her body and is stored in that.

Soul gem are delicate and fragile.

Soul Gems have the appearance reminiscent of a Fabergé egg. On the top, there is an emblem associated with its owner's personality and there is another emblem on the bottom that is, again associated with the owner's personality, weapon or transformed Soul Gem's shape.

When a Soul Gem is destroyed, the owner will "die" instantly and has 48 hours before it starts to decay. Such incidents are said to be rare by Kyubey.

#2Kyubey

Kyubey also known as the Messenger of Magic, is a small, cat-like creature. It has white fur and four ears, one pair representing the average cat and the other similar to those of a rabbit. It has red eyes and golden rings around its long ears. At the bottom of the ears, it appears that it is separated into three, along with a pink-white fade and three red ovals. These ears seem to be what turns the girls into Magical Girls, as seen when it used to extract a Soul Gem from the girl. It has a large tail and pointy ears, the inside of them being pinkish peach color.

Kyubey is a creature who makes contracts with young girls to turn them into "magical girls" so that they can fight witches. In this process, the girl makes a wish and Kyubey grants it, but in return, the girl's soul is put in a small gem, which is also the source of their magic. If destroyed, the magic will disappear and the girl will die.

She also has a brown beret like hat with white fur coming out of it, as well as puce leggings with thin, vertical stripes, deep oak brown fingerless gloves, and deep oak brown calf-high socks with white brims and dull yellow shoes. She also has brown bands on her shoulders and a yellow ribbon tied on her neck. Her outfit resembles a rifleman's.
