Mami Tomoe (巴マミ Tomoe Mami?) is one of the five main Magical Girls in Puella Magi Madoka☆Magica anime and manga series. She serves as a protagonist alongside Kyoko Sakura in The Different Story.
Mami Tomoe is a young woman with a mature physique. She is 19 years old. She has curly blonde hair, usually in twin drills. She has yellow square-shaped eyes. When in her civilian form, Mami is seen mostly in her school uniform which is customized with transparent black leggings along with white Mary Jane shoes.
As a Magical Girl, she wears a white blouse with a yellow placket-like line in the middle, puffy sleeves and white arm warmers, a deep oak brown corset with white trims, brown fasteners with a white ribbon on her waist, and a dull yellow ruffled skirt with a deep oak brown trim. She also has a brown beret like hat with white fur coming out of it, as well as puce leggings with thin, vertical stripes, deep oak brown fingerless gloves, and deep oak brown calf-high socks with white brims and dull yellow shoes. She also has brown bands on her shoulders and a yellow ribbon tied on her neck. Her outfit resembles a rifleman's.
Mami Tomoe appears to be a very kind, gentle, and cheerful girl. She initially appears to be more mature and experienced of a magical girl. Mami is very nice to everyone, but she seems to dislike Homura Akemi. She takes pride in her actions and saving people due to mentoring other Magical Girls, since she has been fighting Witches for the longest of all.
However, she reveals to Madoka Kaname that she is lonely and appears to be desperate for having teammates. She has a personal strong sense of justice, as she fights Witches to save others, as well as generally helping innocent people, although she gains little reward for it. Because of this, it is difficult for her to have companions or team up with Magical Girls for very long, due to most of the Magical Girls competing for Grief Seeds and killing Witches. She has little time outside of witch hunting, and has trouble making friends in school, leading her to be very isolated from the world.
Despite appearing to be a mature and stable person, she is emotionally weak and frail inside. Although she is lonely, she seems to value companionship the most.
Mami was an only child who lived with her two parents before they were killed in a car crash. When she was seriously injured in the crash, Kyubey appeared before her and Mami wished to live. As a magical girl she longed to form a team with others like her, however it was hard to find people willing to partner with her. In the manga, The Different Story, it was revealed that she did meet Kyoko and they started to work together. After the death of her family, Kyoko's relationship with Mami turned bitter and they were no longer friends.
She can summon several one-use guns through her hat or with her body.
When she had transformed into Holy Mami, she had the ability to summon much more of the guns she uses.
She can use restraint magic.
Mami has a notable ability that helps her turn ordinary objects like baseball bats into weapons that are able to protect non-Magical Girls.
With her ribbon, tied around her neck, she can cut things or to tie people up, either as a trap or to protect others. The ribbon can also become a giant gun.
Similarly, she can use wider red ribbons to tie people exclusively, the ribbon will be tighter if the tied person doesn't listen to her.
Special attacks:
Tiro Finale (ティロ・フィナーレ lit. Final Shot): Mami's finisher attack. She summons a giant gun and shouts the incantation phrase to slay her enemy Witch.

The air was thick with warped shadows and the sickly-sweet scent of confections that weren’t quite right. Enormous candy canes curved like sinister blades, their striped surfaces glinting under the pale light of an unseen sky. Mami Tomoe landed lightly atop a broken pathway of crystallized sugar, her muskets already drawn, eyes scanning the twisted expanse of Charlotte’s domain.
Her breathing was steady, but inside, a storm raged—this was unlike any witch’s labyrinth she had faced before. Monsters made of bizarre shapes and pastel hues skittered at the edges of vision, but she ignored them, focusing instead on the deeper darkness ahead. Madoka and Sayaka had stayed behind; this was her fight now.
A round of Tiro Finale barked, echoes thundering against impossible angles of the maze. The bullets shredded through clay-like familiars, splintering them into harmless dust—but the Witch herself remained unseen. Then the ground seemed to tremble. A soft skittering, like beads rolling across tile, came from beneath the sugar-glass floor.
A shape flickered into view: stubby, doll-like limbs and an expressionless head shaped like a piece of wrapped candy. It stood still for a heartbeat… and Mami thought she had it. A deep breath, a confident step forward. Her ribbons braided through the air to trap her opponent’s ankles.
But that was when it changed.
Charlotte’s candy-wrapped head split open with a crack like breaking glass, and an enormous, pale segmented body unfurled—a grotesque caterpillar form with sharp teeth and eyes that glinted without mercy. It struck faster than Mami could bring her pistols to bear again.
For the first time in the labyrinth, Mami’s calm façade shattered. Her ribbons slackened as she staggered backward, twin muskets raised in a desperate, trembling guard. Charlotte’s jaws opened wide… and the world seemed to freeze.

- #1Magical Girlconstant
Keys: Mahao Shujo, Magical Girl, Puella Magi
A Magical Girl (魔法少女, Magical Girl?) or otherwise known as Puella Magi in the mangas and other official media is a girl who has contracted with a messenger of magic known as Kyubey. Once enough despair gets to them, they turn into witches and their bodies are left behind.
For one to become a Magical Girl, a girl must make a wish to an Incubator (Kyubey, usually) to be granted, and in exchange must exorcise Witches. When a wish is made, a Soul Gem is created and is tied spiritually to the Magical Girl’s psyche and body (metaphorically). If the Soul Gem exits the invisible 100 meter radius around a Magical Girl, their body ceases to function until physical contact of the gem is brought back to the girl.
The abilities and outfit a magical girl has is tied to the wish and personality of the girl. For example, a Girl who likes fantasy RPGs who wishes to save an animal’s life is given the outfit equivalent to an RPG character and healing magic due to the wish.
The magnitude of the girl’s magical abilities is tied to an invisible system called “Karmic Destiny,” where the more a girl is tied to fate, the more potent their magic is.
The Soul Gem produced from a wish is egg-shaped, but is the size of a golf ball in true form. The Magical Girl must disguise it as a silver ring with a gemstone in it on the middle left finger to hide it from the outside world.
As such, Magical Girls are sworn to secrecy. They usually will not allow themselves to let their families find out about their second lives as magical girls since they fear being shunned.
- #2Witchesconstant
Keys: Witch, Witch’s, Witches, Witchification
The Witches (魔女, Witches?) are grotesque surreal supernatural beings invisible to humans and are born of curses; negative emotions and feed on humans and their negative emotions and are primary antagonists featured in the Madoka Magica franchise. They tend to create and hide within reality warping spaces, otherworlds or dimensions known as Labyrinths alongside their Familiars. Witches drop grief seeds when defeated.
They are the end result of a Magical Girl once their Soul Gem, once it has accumulated enough negative emotion, despair and curses through the psyche or through the overuse of magic.
The metamorphosis or birth into a witch releases a unfathomable amount of negative emotion energy, in violation of Thermodynamics. This is the motivation for Kyubey to create Magical Girls in the first place, to harvest energy to stave off the Heat Death of the universe.
Certain witches like Walpurgisnacht and Kremhield Gretchen (alongside Kremhield Faust) do not need labyrinths to hide in due to the immense amount of despair that had created them
Witches are also known to fight other witches if a witch intrudes on another’s labyrinth. In addition, Witches can eat grief seeds to grow more powerful.
- #3The Incubatorsconstant
Keys: Kyubey, Incubator, the Incubators.
The Kyubey are small, cat-like creatures. It has white fur and four ears, one pair representing the average cat and the other similar to those of a rabbit. It has red eyes and golden rings around its long ears. At the bottom of the ears, it appears that it is separated into three, along with a pink-white fade and three red ovals. These ears seemingly help it reach a new Magical Girl’s soul, reaching into the magic space to draw out the soul and turn it into a Soul Gem.
Despite appearing and sounding somewhat human, Kyubey is an Incubator and has no personal understanding of human emotion. Despite appearing as an individual, Kyubey and the rest of the Incubators do not seem to have a distinct sense of self. On the occasions where a Kyubey is killed, another will step out and continue to converse as if nothing had occurred.
The Incubators are an emotionless race, but seek to exploit the thermodynamics-violating emotions of the human race to produce energy and prevent the Heat Death of the Universe, the ultimate end of the universe itself. The fact that the system they use to harvest this power-- Magical girls and Witches-- would be considered horrendously evil by humans is inconsequential to the Incubators. They choose this method because it is the most expedient to their goals. No action they take is ultimately malicious, as they do not themselves experience or understand the emotions required to act in such a way. Everything about Kyubey, however, is implied to make it as appealing as possible to the Magical Girls (by leaving out potentially traumatizing details about it), as well as emulating behaviors and 'emotions' for the same purpose.
This lack of understanding ultimately results in Kyubey being unable to predict or understand the actions of the Magical Girls or the results of those actions, despite them being obvious to the girls themselves.
- #4The Magius
Keys: Wings of the Magius, The Magius
The Wings of the Magius (マギウスの翼 lit. Wings of the Magicians?) are the main antagonists of the first game arc and Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka☆Magica Side Story anime. They are an organization of Magical Girls who seek to escape the tragic fate of a Magical Girl that the Incubators have created.
Magius: The superiors and leaders of the organization. They are responsible for the creation of the Doppel, the Automatic Purification System and the Uwasa: Alina Gray, Nemu Hiiragi and Touka Satomi
White Feathers: They rank lower than the Magius, they wear white cloaks. Some White Feathers are Mifuyu Azusa, San Kagura, Mami Tomoe (temporarily, she realized she was being manipulated and left), Tsukuyo Amane, Tsukasa Amane, Ryou Midori, Kyoko Sakura (Temporarily, she was only in for about 4 hours before dropping out due to disinterest) and Momoko Togame (temporary, she left when Kaede's doppel overtook her)
Black Feathers: Lowest ranked members, and are usually footsoldiers unless said otherwise.
- #5Doppelsconstant
Keys: Doppelgänger, Doppel, Doppels
Doppels in Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story are essentially the physical manifestation of a magical girl’s despair, but unlike traditional Witches, they are not a permanent transformation. In the original Madoka Magica system, when a Soul Gem becomes fully corrupted, the magical girl inevitably turns into a Witch and loses all sense of self. However, in Kamihama City, this process is interrupted, allowing that same despair to instead take form as a Doppel. This means the magical girl does not fully “fall,” but instead partially externalizes that darkness in a controlled or semi-controlled way. Because of this, Doppels act as a middle state between a magical girl and her Witch form. They are deeply tied to the same emotional and thematic concepts as Witches, but function very differently in execution. Mechanically and visually, a Doppel is often depicted as a monstrous, surreal extension of the magical girl’s body or psyche. It is not a separate being in the same way a Witch is, but rather something that remains connected to the user, sometimes physically attached or emerging from them. Each Doppel reflects the girl’s inner fears, regrets, or obsessions, similar to how Witches embody those traits after a full transformation. In many cases, the Doppel even shares the same name as the girl’s Witch form, reinforcing that they are fundamentally the same entity in different states. When summoned, the Doppel acts as a powerful attack or entity that can devastate enemies. However, this power comes directly from the user’s despair, making it inherently unstable and emotionally taxing
The reason Doppels exist at all is due to a unique phenomenon in Kamihama City, often referred to as an “automatic purification system.” This system interferes with the normal magical girl lifecycle by preventing Soul Gems from reaching the point of no return. Instead of becoming Witches, magical girls release their accumulated corruption outward as a Doppel. In effect, the system acts like a pressure valve, redirecting despair rather than allowing it to fully consume the individual. This also means that using a Doppel can temporarily cleanse or reduce the corruption in a Soul Gem. However, this comes with a trade-off, as the emotional burden is not eliminated—just externalized and weaponized.
Despite their advantages, Doppels are not entirely safe or stable. If a magical girl cannot properly control her emotions, the Doppel can spiral out of control and act unpredictably. In the anime, this is sometimes symbolized by visual cues like masks or loss of composure, indicating that the user is being overwhelmed by their own despair. In extreme cases, the Doppel can begin to dominate or engulf the user, blurring the line between controlled power and full Witchification. This makes Doppels both a lifeline and a risk, as overuse or emotional instability can lead to dangerous consequences. The system essentially allows magical girls to fight against their fate, but not without cost.
Another important aspect of Doppels is how they change the broader ecosystem of magical girls and Witches. Because fewer girls are turning into Witches, there are also fewer Grief Seeds available to cleanse Soul Gems in the traditional way. This creates a resource imbalance and new conflicts among magical girls, as the old system of survival is disrupted. At the same time, Doppels introduce a more hopeful—but still flawed—alternative, where girls can confront and use their despair instead of being destroyed by it. This thematic shift is central to Magia Record, contrasting the inevitability of tragedy in the original series with a more complicated system of resistance. In the end, Doppels represent both a rebellion against fate and a reminder that despair cannot simply be erased—it can only be transformed and managed.
- #6Grief Seedconstant
Keys: Grief Seed, Grief Seeds
Grief Seed (グリーフシード, Grief Seed?) is an item dropped by Witches and are used to cleanse Magical Girl Soul Gems
They are the witch’s “egg,” meaning if enough despair accumulates into it, the witch will hatch and immediately create a labyrinth.
These are coveted items for Magical Girls, and they fill fight tooth and nail to get their hands on even one. For a Grief seed to cleanse a Soul Gem, one must hold it in proximity (approximately 12cm at most) to let it absorb the despair.
One can dispose of a Grief Seed via feeding a Kyubey (an Incubator) with the seed, meaning it is destroyed.
