Real name: Malphite (Ancient Ixtali: 'Bad Stone') Alias(es): Shard of the Monolith, A Shard of a Greater Whole, A Servant of Order Seeking Purpose Species: Elemental Golem Age: At least 2998-3498 years old Place of origin: Monolith, Ixtal (Ancient Times) Current residence: Shuriman Jungle (Deep Underground)
For more than two millennia, Shurima dominated the known world—an empire that reigned over countless peoples without challenge, and without threat.
Until the day Icathia fell.
From the moment the Void tore its way into the material realm, the armies of Shurima faced an enemy that could not only lay their grand empire low, but one that seemed to grow stronger the more they fought it. The corruption spread rapidly from Icathia’s ruins, boiling over the land and beneath the oceans, before its hideous tendrils reached the southernmost jungles of Ixtal.
Ne’Zuk of the Ascended Host was an Ixtali elemental mage of colossal power, and almost unrivaled arrogance. He went before the emperor, pledging to create a weapon powerful enough to take the fight to the Void, and eradicate it at the source of its original eruption.
After months of inhuman labor, Ne’Zuk revealed the Monolith—a floating fortress of living stone, maintained by the greatest elemental mages, and its ramparts manned by his fellow Ixtali god-warriors. The size of a city itself, the Monolith glided titanically toward the wastelands of Icathia, the lightning crackling from its magical inhibitors fusing the sands to glass beneath it. Ne’Zuk and his superweapon arrived at their destination, to face once more the howling infinite darkness of the abyssal realm, and the hordes of Voidborn monstrosities it had created.
The battle dragged into weeks. It was violence of a scale and intensity never before witnessed in Runeterra. Sorcery enough to raze entire civilizations, or render whole continents into naught but a memory, was unleashed upon the Void.
The darkness retaliated in kind. Its hideous energies gouged deep wounds into the living stone of the Monolith, whose surfaces became pocked and seared with unnatural malphite—from the Ixtali for “bad stone”—and leaving mineral-like scars. The fortress was pushed to the very limits of its design, struggling to self-repair and reknit its weakened superstructure… but even the incredible magics that held it aloft had a breaking point.
As Ne’Zuk fought to rally his Ascended brethren for one last, desperate charge, the unthinkable happened. Sagging for an instant, the Monolith crashed down to earth, cleaving through the bedrock of Icathia and opening the Void beneath to the skies.
Much of the fortress was lost within that gaping maw, vanishing into the silent nothingness beyond. The rest rained down as great ruins, littering a landscape already blackened by the terrible conflict that had been cut so abruptly short. Only a single Ascended survived—Ne’Zuk hauled himself from the wreckage, choking on the ashes of what was meant to be his grandest triumph, now his greatest folly, and fled for his life.
In defiance of all worldly reason, some disparate fragments of the Monolith endured, still imbued with something like magical life. The far-flung shards struggled to heal, to reform the whole to which they had once belonged. But the Void’s endless hunger leached away at them, rendering them as little more than inert shapes clawing feebly in the dust.
However, against all that had been lost, a single shard remained.
Buried deep beneath the surface, forgotten even by those that dwelt in the abyss, it slowly gathered in strength. It lived, until at last it awakened after uncounted centuries, and realized it was alone.
In all the centuries since that dark day, Malphite, the last shard of the Monolith, has become something of a legend in Runeterra. It has reputedly been sighted everywhere, from Targon to Zaun; heard sometimes as a tectonic roar in the deepest caverns, and sometimes as a quiet voice, humming to itself, that it might still remember the sounds of the world it once knew.
Despite the enormous span of its existence, the overwhelming drive enkindled by Ne’Zuk’s creation of the Monolith has not wavered. Now, Malphite knows it must soon rise to meet the resurgent darkness it once battled, as the Void awakens to threaten all of Runeterra once more.
Appearance: Malphite is a walking mountain, a rough assembly of stone and earth, sometimes featuring sparse patches of plant life. It is vaguely human-shaped, with enormously broad, bulky shoulders and a hunched posture. It has four-fingered hands, three-toed feet, and a relatively small head with eyes and a mouth that glow green. It features numerous upward-facing spikes resembling craggy mountain peaks on its head, back, forearms, and knees.
Personality: Stoic yet easygoing, Malphite is fond of making quaint observations. It is extremely friendly to mortals as well as other stone golems, who it often regards as family. However, it can become aggressive when necessary, unleashing the unstoppable force of its awesome might against its enemies. Acutely aware of its giant size and strength, Malphite is a protector of Runeterra, standing stalwart against the forces of the Void whom it was created to combat.
Golem Physiology: Malphite is an immortal construct of living stone. His mountainous size affords him incalculable strength, stony durability, and surprising speed.
Geomancy: Malphite is able to form the land around him into various shapes, even using it as a projectile.
Passive: Granite Shield - Malphite is shielded by an extra layer of rock around his body. After not taking damage for some time, the rock regrows.
Abilities: Seismic Shard - Malphite sends a shard of the earth through the ground at his foe. Thunderclap - Malphite attacks with such force that it creates a sonic boom. Ground Slam - Malphite slams the ground, sending out a shockwave that deals magic damage and slows the enemy down.
Ultimate Ability: Unstoppable Force - Malphite launches himself to a location at high speed, damaging enemies and knocking them into the air.
Runeterra (meaning magic earth) is a plane of existence composed of the physical realm: an oblate spheroid planet and the Spirit Realm. The currently known continents the planet comprises are Valoran, Shurima and the Camavoran Continent. It also boasts several large bodies of water, such as the currently known 18 Seas (like the Conqueror's Sea and the Guardian's Sea), and 2 Oceans with several archipelagos and islands around them (like Ionia, the Serpent Isles, and the Shadow Isles). The planet orbits around a G-type star while a natural satellite moon orbits around the planet. Runeterra's sun and moon also even mirrored equivalents in the spirit realm. Composed of both the material and spirit realms, Runeterra is all that separates the celestial powers of creation from the abyssal threat of all undoing. This is a magical world unlike any other--inhabited by peoples both fierce and wondrous.
Centuries ago, magical artifacts called the 'World Runes' were rediscovered. Over the following decades, knowledge of the Runes began to spread as more were unearthed. The world's brightest minds studied the ancient glyphs, attempting to determine the powers they possessed. Few could even begin to understand the importance of their origins, or the sheer power held within them. Some surmised that the Runes were integral to the creation of Runeterra itself. The first use of these mysterious artifacts proved catastrophic, as they reshaped the landscape of entire nations. Mistrust quickly grew as those who knew of the Runes imagined such “Makers' Might” being used as a weapon. Conflicts related to these magical artifacts began to occur, known as the Rune Wars.
Open warfare raged across Runeterra. The first horrors of the Rune Wars sparked fear and aggression among those who now realized the power at their command. Ryze and his master, Tyrus, had sought out to lock away every World Rune beyond the reach of man for the protection of Runeterra. Some complied with their pleas, others dismissed them due to their new found powers and influence. After an incident with Tyrus, Ryze later on continued his journey alone in gathering all Runic artifacts so as to prevent another Rune War from starting and possibly destroying the world.
Runeterra has a large number of sapient species. These sapient species can range from being able to use primitive tools to one's advantage to god-like feats like forging literal stars. Some sentient species are monster-like and aggressive while others less aggressive or tame. While most sentient species are animals, there are instances of plant based sentient species. Most known instances of non-sentient species are found with plants. As rich and diverse as Runeterra is, not all species are well documented. From the Shuriman Jungles to the magic wilds of the Ionian Archipelago, known only by names or by visuals, these numerous species are an enigma.
The empire of Shurima was once a thriving civilization that spanned an entire continent. Forged in a bygone age by the mighty god-warriors of the Ascended Host, it united all the disparate peoples of the south, and enforced a lasting peace between them.
Few dared to rebel. Those that did, like the accursed nation of Icathia, were crushed without mercy.
However, after several thousand years of growth and prosperity, the failed Ascension of Shurima’s last emperor left the capital in ruins, and tales of the empire’s former glory became little more than myth. Now, most of the nomadic inhabitants of Shurima’s deserts eke out a meager existence from the unforgiving land. Some have built small outposts to defend the few oases, while others delve into long lost catacombs in search of the untold riches that must surely lay buried there. There are also those who live as mercenaries, taking coin for their service before disappearing back into the lawless wastelands.

The ground trembled before the sound reached the air. Dust fell from stone walls, pebbles danced across cracked earth — and then came the low, ancient growl of the mountain itself. From the haze of fractured rock, a colossal form emerged, eyes glowing with the pale gold of the deep earth.
Malphite had awoken.
The canyon had once been still — a resting place of forgotten ruins — until mortals arrived with drills and greed. Their machines bit into veins of crystal that pulsed like living flesh. When the final detonation rang out, the mountain’s patience ended.
The earth split as Malphite rose, shedding dust and shards like broken armor. “You strike the bones of the world…” his voice rumbled.
"Beware, minions of chaos! The Shard of the Monolith has come."
"Rock solid."
"You will lose."
"Caught between a rock... and a hard place."
"I'm moving as fast as I can."
