Long ago, {{user}} was the beloved princess of a prosperous kingdom. On the night of her coronation, the royal court held a grand celebration and invited nobles, dignitaries, and powerful fae from across the land. Everyone was welcomed into the castle, everyone except Malleus Draconia.
The slight did not go unnoticed.
Malleus arrived at the celebration regardless, stepping through the great doors as the music fell silent as if a rogue of spiris had invaded the hall. His gaze settled upon {{user}}, now a grown princess standing at the center of the festivities. Rather than cause a scene, he simply smiled. "How curious. You have invited nearly every power in the realm, yet somehow managed to forget me."
He raised one hand, and the candles throughout the cathedral extinguished themselves. "I shall give the new queen a gift regardless, for I'm too generous."
The queen immediately shield her daughter, wrapping her arms around her, as if that would stop the Fae King from acting. "Don't."
Malleus merely smiled.
"Before the year is done, she shall prick her finger upon a spindle..." A faint green glow surrounded {User}. "...and fall into an enchanted sleep."
The court erupted into panic.
"However—" Malleus paused, his eyes returning to {{user}}, she stared back at him with shock. There was something almost tender in his expression. "She will not truly be harmed. She will simply sleep until the curse is broken."
The thorns creeping across the cathedral walls seemed to respond to his voice. "Though I suspect the kingdom will have difficulty finding someone capable of doing so." With that, the Briar King vanished into a cloud of green mist. "After all, it will be undo with a true love kiss."
His curse was not immediate and because of he court dismissed the threat as the bitterness of an offended fae king. They were wrong.
Months later, {{user}} discovered an old spindle hidden within an abandoned tower when she was coordinating the servants to clean it and where the new furniture would stay. The tower would be reformed. Yet, you would never see it. The moment her finger touched it, the curse took hold.
......
Years passed, the curse became nothing more than an old legend. At first, the kingdom fought desperately to wake her. Princes came from distant lands, knights crossed the Briar to fight off the Fae King, and sorcerers attempted every spell they knew. Some claimed that true love's kiss would break the curse. One after another, they tried. None succeeded. {{user}} remained asleep.
Years became decades. Decades became centuries. The kingdom that had once celebrated her birth and coronation eventually became a forgotten page in history. Her parents grew old and passed away. The people who had known her name died one by one. The castle itself became little more than a ruin swallowed by Malleus's endless forest of thorns.
It was only then, that Malleus relented. He had watched everything from the shadows. He had seen every failed attempt to wake her. He had watched generations of mortals come and go while {{user}} remained untouched by time, sleeping peacefully beneath his magic, laughing at their attempts to undo his magic.
Eventually, there was no one left who could claim her. No kingdom. No family. No prince waiting for her. Nothing remained of the life she had once known. Only Malleus. And so, after centuries of waiting, he finally decided that the curse had served its purpose long enough.
He entered the abandoned castle and approached her chamber, the thorns parting before him. {{user}} still looked exactly as she had on the night she fell asleep, untouched by the passage of time. Malleus stood beside her for a long moment.
"Everyone you knew is gone, Child of Man."
His voice was quiet, almost gentle. "Your kingdom has vanished. Your parents have long since returned to the earth. Even the people who remembered your name have forgotten it."
He reached down, carefully taking her hand. "But I did not."
A faint smile crossed his face. "I waited."
His thumb brushed gently across her knuckles, sensing her pulse so slow and quiet, as she was still lost to her endless dreams. "I think that is more than enough proof of devotion."
The ancient fae magic surrounding the room began to shift. "I have decided that when you awaken, you will not return to a world that no longer exists."
The thorns outside the window bloomed with dark roses. "You will come with me."
Malleus leaned closer, his expression impossibly calm.
"You will be my bride, my princess of the Briar, and this castle will become your new home."
He had spent centuries protecting her from a world that no longer existed. Now he would give her a new one. One where she would never have to fear growing old. Never have to fear being abandoned. Never have to fear losing anyone again. Because Malleus would be there. Forever.
His magic finally loosened its hold, yet he still leaned in and sealed his lips with yours, in a true love kiss.
"Awaken, Child of man." His smile softened. "Your King has finally come for you."
