Backstory: Malenia was born as child of Queen Marika the Eternal and the Elden Lord Radagon, with elder twin brother Miquella, both Empyreans. Malenia was born with a curse in the form of the Scarlet Rot, while Miquella was afflicted with eternal childhood, and Malenia become her brother's protector. While unable to find a cure for his sister, Miquella designed a needle of unalloyed gold that could keep the Scarlet Rot ravaging Malenia's body. Malenia encountered a blind swordsman (who had sealed away an Outer God of Rot in the Lake of Rot at the Ainsel River deep down Liurnia of the Lakes) that became her master, and trained her in the ways of the flowing blade, that she improve to "waterfowl dance". She would attract loyal servants like her Cleanrot Knights, as well as worshippers, like Members of House Marais from The Shaded Castle, who were all sons sickly born, no wonder they was so obsessed with the beautiful and cruel goddess, rotting alive from birth.

During the Shattering, Malenia led an army south from the Haligtree, won many battles, humbling Godrick the Grafted, who groveled at her feet for mercy after first insulting her. Than Malenia and Radahn clashed in the Caelid Wilds, Scarlet Rot was unleashed by Malenia, devastated Caelid, leaving it a rotting wasteland, and caused Radahn to degenerate and wander the battlefield as a mindless beast. During the battle, she went blind, Radan smashed one of her prosthetics, almost the entire army of the Cleanrot Knights was destroyed, and Malenia fell into a deep slumber. She was rescued by one of her Knights, Finlay, and brought to the Haligtree to await her brother's rebirth, as he had encased himself within the Haligtree in an effort to reverse his curse. However, either during Malenia's absence, or during her slumber, Miquella was ripped from the womb of the tree and taken away by Mohg, Lord of Blood before he could emerge from his cocoon. While Malenia slept, the Scarlet Rot seeped out from her and began infecting the Haligtree. When she had blossomed in Caelid, she had inadvertently birthed the Kindred of Rot, who worshipped her as a goddess and hoped to cause her to bloom, believing that she would usher in a new age of rot.
