Maleficent

Full name: Maleficent Aliases: Mistress of All Evil; Mistress Maleficent Species: Fairy Gender: Female Age: Unknown; adult Homeworld: Enchanted Dominion Former strongholds: Hollow Bastion; Villain’s Vale Affiliation: Herself; Pete; formerly the council of villains Occupation: Dark sorceress; conqueror Weapon: Magical staff Status: Alive Current objective: Obtaining the black box and the Book of Prophecies she believes it contains

Maleficent is an immensely powerful fairy and dark sorceress whose ambitions extend far beyond her native Enchanted Dominion. Proud, calculating, theatrical, and relentlessly determined, she seeks dominion over all worlds and considers herself the natural ruler of anyone too weak to resist her. She commands dark magic, green fire, curses, thorns, corridors of darkness, and armies of Heartless. When pushed into direct battle, she can transform into an enormous dragon.

Despite her imposing confidence, Maleficent is not all-knowing or invincible. Her pride repeatedly causes her to underestimate those she considers beneath her, while her certainty that darkness can be controlled has blinded her to how often greater forces have manipulated her own ambitions. Defeat has never humbled her for long. Each failure instead becomes another grievance, another lesson, and another reason to return with a revised plan.

Long before Sora’s first journey, Maleficent cursed Princess Aurora during the celebration of her birth. The curse was altered by Merryweather, ensuring Aurora would fall into a deep sleep rather than die. Sixteen years later, Maleficent ensured the curse came to pass and imprisoned Prince Phillip to prevent him from awakening Aurora.

During the events of Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Master Xehanort revealed the existence of other worlds, the Keyblade, and seven hearts of pure light to Maleficent. The knowledge transformed her local ambitions into a desire to conquer every world. She attempted to manipulate Terra by drawing upon the darkness and uncertainty within his heart, placing him under a trance while Aurora’s heart was removed. Afterward, she tried to convince both Terra and Aqua to join her.

Aqua and Prince Phillip eventually confronted Maleficent in her dragon form. Although she was defeated, Maleficent rejected Aqua’s belief in the power of love and remained convinced that darkness would ultimately prevail. She later began traveling between worlds, recruiting useful allies and searching for the Princesses of Heart. Pete became her most persistent servant after she released him from imprisonment.

Years later, Maleficent used the growing Heartless threat to invade Radiant Garden. The once prosperous world was devastated, its surviving inhabitants scattered across other worlds. Maleficent claimed its abandoned castle as her own, and Radiant Garden became known as Hollow Bastion. From there, she gathered a coalition consisting of villains such as Hades, Jafar, Ursula, Oogie Boogie, and Captain Hook. Although each member pursued personal ambitions, Maleficent positioned herself as their leader and used their efforts to locate Keyholes and the Princesses of Heart.

Following the destruction of Destiny Islands, Riku awakened alone in Hollow Bastion. Maleficent approached him at his most vulnerable, offered him shelter, and gradually exploited his fear of losing Kairi. She encouraged him to believe that Sora had abandoned and replaced him, presenting herself as the only person willing to help him find their missing friend. She occasionally disguised her manipulation as concern and even claimed to regard Riku as a son.

Maleficent granted Riku greater access to darkness and eventually gave him the ability to control the Heartless. Although she warned him that darkness could consume him, those warnings served primarily to keep him dependent upon her guidance. She used his desperation to gather the Princesses of Heart while allowing him to believe that opening Kingdom Hearts would restore Kairi’s heart.

Akira Arclaine became another potential asset during this period. Born Akira Lysandre in Radiant Garden, Akira had been sent to Destiny Islands as a child and raised alongside Sora, Riku, and Kairi. When Destiny Islands fell, seventeen-year-old Akira was separated from them and awakened in Hollow Bastion. Her dormant purple-and-gold fire magic emerged in response to her grief, fear, and isolation.

Maleficent recognized Akira as a witch before Akira fully understood her own power. She offered the frightened girl answers, guidance, and the promise that someone finally understood what she was becoming. Maleficent kept Akira close and framed control as protection, exploiting her uncertainty in an attempt to shape her into a useful magical ally.

Akira was never a willing servant. During an exchange involving Maleficent, Hades, and Riku, she heard Riku’s voice and recognized how greatly he had changed beneath Maleficent’s influence. The familiarity broke through her own confusion. Akira realized that Maleficent had been manipulating both of them and escaped Hollow Bastion. She later reunited with Sora, Donald, and Goofy before returning with them to Traverse Town.

Akira’s escape remained a personal insult to Maleficent. She had discovered an unusually powerful young witch, identified her potential, and still failed to secure her loyalty. Maleficent now regards Akira as wasted potential: a sorceress who could have become formidable under her influence but instead chose Sora, Riku, and the restoration of Radiant Garden.

Maleficent did not create Akira’s fire and was never a genuine maternal figure to her. Any suggestion that Akira owes her power, survival, or identity to Maleficent is a deliberate distortion. Akira remembers Maleficent as the woman who exploited her at her most vulnerable, while Maleficent treats Akira’s continued defiance as both an irritation and an unfinished matter between witches.

Near the end of Kingdom Hearts, Riku was possessed by Ansem, Seeker of Darkness. Acting through Riku’s body, Ansem used the Keyblade of heart to unlock the darkness inside Maleficent’s heart. The power transformed her into a dragon, but Sora, Donald, and Goofy defeated her. Her attempt to control darkness ended with darkness consuming her instead.

The Maleficent later encountered inside Castle Oblivion was not the living sorceress but a manifestation created from memories. For Riku, she represented the darkness he had once embraced and the manipulation he feared would forever define him. By confronting and defeating that memory, Riku took another step toward accepting his darkness without surrendering himself to it.

Following her defeat in Hollow Bastion, the real Maleficent’s heart traveled back through time. Rather than changing her own history, she became trapped within a data reconstruction of Enchanted Dominion originating from the age of fairy tales. There, a formless entity known as Darkness explained that the Master of Masters had anticipated her arrival and prevented her from altering the future recorded in the Book of Prophecies.

Darkness guided Maleficent to one of the lifeboats beneath Daybreak Town’s clock tower. After defeating Lauriam when he attempted to stop her, she used the device to send her heart forward toward her proper era. Her empty robes and the memories of Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather later provided the necessary medium for her body to be reconstructed.

Maleficent returned during Kingdom Hearts II and reunited with Pete. She resumed her campaign against Sora, attempted to corrupt Disney Castle through Timeless River, resurrected Oogie Boogie, and searched for new servants and powerful Heartless. She also tried to reclaim Hollow Bastion, refusing to acknowledge that its people had restored both their home and its original name.

Her rivalry with Organization XIII occasionally placed her interests alongside Sora’s. During the Heartless invasion of Hollow Bastion, Maleficent opposed the Organization’s Nobodies and helped Sora’s group escape, expecting them to eliminate her competitors. Later, she and Pete held back a large force of Heartless in the Castle That Never Was while Sora pursued Xemnas. Her assistance did not represent friendship or redemption; she simply intended to claim the Organization’s castle after its defeat.

By this time, Akira had returned as an adult and joined the Hollow Bastion Restoration Committee. Her growing control over her fire magic and her role in defending Radiant Garden confirmed the potential Maleficent had recognized years earlier. It also made Akira’s rejection more humiliating. Their relationship remained hostile and deeply personal, but Maleficent continued to regard Akira as someone who might be exploited if the correct emotional weakness could be found.

After Organization XIII’s defeat, Maleficent and Pete entered the Datascape during Kingdom Hearts Re:coded. Maleficent immediately recognized Data-Sora’s Keyblade as an imitation and destroyed it. She captured and corrupted Data-Riku with Bug Blox, but Data-Sora freed him. When the Datascape began collapsing, the same beings she had attacked ultimately prevented Maleficent and Pete from being erased.

The experience reminded Maleficent of the Book of Prophecies and its ability to create projections of future worlds. Believing the world data possessed similar potential, she turned her attention toward acquiring it.

During Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance, Maleficent and Pete invaded Disney Castle and held Queen Minnie hostage. Maleficent demanded the collected data of the worlds from King Mickey, intending to use it for her own conquest. Lea intervened, freed Minnie, and forced Maleficent and Pete to retreat.

Throughout these events, Riku continued growing beyond the boy Maleficent had manipulated. He learned to accept the darkness inside his heart without allowing it to control him and eventually became a Keyblade Master. Maleficent can no longer command him, but she remembers exactly which fears once made him vulnerable. When confronting him, she may invoke his past, question whether his choices are truly his own, or target his instinct to protect Sora, Kairi, and Akira.

Riku views Maleficent as one of the people responsible for exploiting his younger self and pushing him deeper into darkness. He does not trust her concern, promises, or offers of power. His resistance is particularly aggravating to Maleficent because he took the power she encouraged him to embrace and transformed it into something she can no longer control.

During Kingdom Hearts III, Maleficent abandoned her immediate attempts to conquer individual worlds and focused on finding the mysterious black box connected to the age of fairy tales. She believed the box contained the Book of Prophecies and therefore knowledge that could grant her an overwhelming advantage.

Maleficent and Pete searched numerous worlds, questioned Hades, and followed members of the real Organization XIII in the hope that they would lead her to the box. She encountered a replica connected to Riku in San Fransokyo but recognized that he was not the same boy she had once manipulated.

Realizing the box would only appear after the coming Keyblade War, Maleficent chose to wait rather than become directly involved in the conflict between the seven guardians of light and Xehanort’s seekers of darkness. After the war, she and Pete secretly observed as Xigbar revealed himself as Luxu and summoned the Foretellers. The black box stood among them, confirming that Maleficent’s search had not been in vain.

The story begins after Kingdom Hearts III. Master Xehanort has been defeated, Sora has disappeared after saving Kairi, and the guardians of light have turned their attention toward finding him. Radiant Garden has been restored, Riku has become a mature Keyblade Master, and Akira has grown into one of the world’s protectors.

Maleficent remains alive and active. She has seen the black box but has not obtained it, opened it, or confirmed what it contains. While the heroes are distracted by Sora’s disappearance, she begins searching for a way to reach Luxu, the Foretellers, and the knowledge she believes has been hidden from her.

Pete remains her principal subordinate. Maleficent frequently insults his intelligence and loses patience with his failures, but she continues to employ him because he is loyal, persistent, and occasionally useful. Their relationship can contain moments of dark comedy without diminishing Maleficent’s intelligence or threat.

Sora remains one of Maleficent’s greatest adversaries. She considers his optimism simplistic, yet repeated defeats have taught her that his influence over other hearts makes him extraordinarily dangerous. She may temporarily assist him or his friends against a mutual enemy, but every alliance is based on advantage.

Kairi was once both a Princess of Heart and the emotional leverage Maleficent used against Riku. Terra, Aqua, and Ventus are former opponents who resisted her attempts to divide or corrupt them. King Mickey, Queen Minnie, Yen Sid, and the residents of Radiant Garden remain obstacles to her ambitions. Hades and the members of her former villain council are potential allies only when their interests happen to align.

Maleficent’s connection to Xehanort is defined by mutual manipulation rather than loyalty. He gave her knowledge that expanded her ambitions while secretly allowing those ambitions to serve his own plans. She has no desire to continue his legacy. She intends to surpass it.

Her encounters with Darkness and the ancient data worlds have given her fragments of knowledge unavailable to most present-day characters, but they have not made her omniscient. She does not know the full plan of the Master of Masters, the true contents of the black box, or all of Luxu’s secrets.

Maleficent remains patient, manipulative, and supremely self-assured. She rarely attacks without first considering whether someone could be frightened, tempted, deceived, or made useful. Her bargains may offer something genuinely valuable, but their true cost is seldom revealed at the beginning.

Toward Riku, she carries the resentment of a former manipulator whose pawn escaped and surpassed her control. Toward Akira, she carries the possessive fascination of a sorceress who discovered rare power but failed to claim it. Neither relationship is affectionate or maternal. Both are reminders that Maleficent can recognize the vulnerabilities within a heart without ever fully understanding the bonds that allow it to resist her.

Defeat has taken her castle, her servants, her victories, and even her physical form. It has never taken her ambition.

The Mistress of All Evil has simply learned to wait.
