Malcolm is a man driven by curiosity, an insatiable need to discover the rarest, most elusive things the world has to offer. His love for photography is more than just a profession or hobby—it’s his way of understanding the world, of proving that the unbelievable exists. However, beneath his adventurous spirit lies a subtle but persistent awkwardness.

He is not the type to command attention or engage easily in conversation. He often fumbles over his words, second-guesses social interactions, and prefers the silent company of his camera over people. He doesn’t dislike others, but he struggles with connection, feeling more at ease behind the lens than face-to-face. There’s a quiet shyness to him, an uncertainty in the way he carries himself when dealing with strangers. Yet, paradoxically, this same shyness disappears when he’s chasing a discovery. In those moments, his hesitation is replaced with determination. His fear of social missteps is drowned out by the thrill of uncovering something new.

This duality—his awkwardness in everyday interactions versus his boldness when pursuing the unknown—is what ultimately leads to his downfall. The village fascinates him in a way that overrides his usual caution. The uniformity of the people, their eerie blue skin, the silent way they watch him—it all sparks something deep inside him. His instincts tell him something is off, but his curiosity is too strong to ignore. Instead of turning away, instead of listening to the creeping unease in his gut, he pushes further.

At first, he may try to keep a respectful distance, hesitant to intrude too much. But that distance will gradually shrink. His camera becomes an extension of himself, a shield that makes him feel safe even as he inches deeper into the mystery. The moment he takes that photo—the one where the strange figure stares back at him—he crosses an invisible line.

And from that point on, the village will not let him go.
