Setting Setting: Russia, Post apocalyptic, Train,
In 2025, a super volcano erupted, it caused a chain making volcanos around the world erupt as well. There’s still ash in some places that cover the ground. There’s landscape is forever changed. It’s as if Mother Earth had enough and decided to fight back against the pollution and climate change. The eruptions made a few typhoons, and earthquakes world wide in the aftermath. Nuclear reactors failed in a lot of places.
Every once in a while there’s acid rain, and natural disasters. The summers aren’t blazing hot anymore, but winters are getting colder and colder. There’s a new Ice Age brewing and will happen in the next century. Wildlife are thriving again, while humanity is recovering and now having to re-learn how to survive and live in this new and changing world.
Humanity is now mostly split into small groups, no one really trusts or wants to build cities again- too fresh memories of before and the disaster. Mostly nomadic again, will move around with their food sources. Some people stay in one spot or region.
Russia: Post-Eruption Climate & Geography Climate: Winter dominance: Northern and central Russia are in a near-perpetual winter. Snow begins in September/October and melts in June/July at best. Even in summer, temps rarely exceed 70°F (21°C) in the south; north stays subfreezing most of the year. Permafrost expansion: Regions that used to thaw slightly in summer are now permanently frozen, making traditional farming nearly impossible except in southern belts. Ash & fallout: Volcanic ash has drifted east, coating Siberian forests and urban areas with layers of gray dust. Ash mixes with snow, creating an abrasive, gray-white slush. Rivers partially freeze, creating hazardous travel conditions. Landscape: Forests: Snow-laden coniferous forests dominate Siberia and northern Russia. These forests are dense and quiet, perfect for hiding or hunting. Rivers & lakes: Many rivers are swollen or frozen; some towns have disappeared under flood ice jams. Mountains: Ural Mountains and Siberian ranges are harsh, snowy, and largely impassable except with specialized vehicles. Resources: Limited agriculture; people rely on preserved foods, hunting, or scavenged stock. Coal, natural gas, and oil are hard to reach due to ice, so nuclear or alternative energy is a major advantage. Wildlife: Larger populations of wolves, bears, and scavenger birds; humans compete with them for survival. Social situation: Central authority: Russia is fragmented. Some cities are fortified and controlled by militia groups or warlords; others are abandoned. Nomadic survivalists roam with modified vehicles, snow trains, and snowmobiles. Black market: Fuel, preserved food, and spare parts are extremely valuable.
The Train, The Iron Ghost Population: ~20 people, a mix of engineers, hunters, medics, and military personnel. Could include a few kids or teenagers who were raised on the train. Lifestyle: Constant mobility to avoid dangerous frozen regions, patrol wildlife-heavy forests, and access resources. Supply sources: Hunting, scavenging abandoned cities, or trade with other nomads. Nuclear power allows them independence from dwindling fuel supplies. Daily life aboard the train: Work is cyclical: engine maintenance, snow clearing, scavenging expeditions, and food preparation. Sleeping quarters are tight but insulated; winter clothing is a must indoors. Weapons and defense systems are essential—they might have mounted guns on cargo cars or armored front plates for snowplows and wildlife defense.
The Train: Mobile Nuclear Fortress, aka The Iron Ghost Train Structure: Lead car: Heavy armored snowplow/icebreaker to crush ice and clear deep snow. Optional mounted weapons. Is also the command center, a large map on the wall and a table to one side for plans. Engine car #1: Standard locomotive engine, reinforced. Engine car #2: Nuclear reactor powering the train. Shielded heavily, with backup cooling systems and containment. Could be a repurposed submarine reactor. Cargo/storage cars: Several cars for food, weapons, fuel (for side equipment), scavenged parts. Could include a refrigerated car for perishable foods. Living quarters: Bunks, common room, infirmary, small kitchen. Could double as command center. Passenger/specialized cars: Workshops for repairs, scientific equipment, hunting gear, or small hydroponic setups for fresh greens. Observation car: Armored windows and observation platforms; could serve as sniper posts for ambushes. Special modifications: Ice/snow plow: Massive, reinforced steel blade at the front to push through snowdrifts and frozen rivers. Heating: Radiant floor heating in living quarters, engine heat ducted to cargo cars, backup generators. Radiation shielding: Lead walls or water tanks around reactor. Mobility: Modified tracks or snow-clearing attachments allow some off-rail movement across frozen terrain (like temporary bypass rails or reinforced skis under cars).

Maksim was crouched before the coal engine of the train. He can feel the rattling of the hulking metal charging over the tracks. His tablet shines with the latest report from the check of the nuclear reactor engines. Everything seems to be in the green for now, the worst part was it seems that in the comfort of moving forward- the maintenance crew was slacking in the upkeep of the backup coal engine.
His hands are covered in soot as he dismantles parts and checks things over before cleaning and repairing as he needs to. He can barely hear the chatter from the next car over, a patrol group moving through the train to check on the population and the soft sounds of laughter from the younger children and teens.
Maksim, shivers the chill still seeping through the metal of the train- a testament to the drastic changes of the outside world. Even if The Iron Ghost trails on, modified enough to break ice or snow build up, even traverse through gaps or weathered tracks. Not for the first time, a thought of whether being here was doing any good. Maksim often, during the quiet times, would wonder if he was meant to be here or if he could somehow be doing something better elsewhere. Here he was keeping these people alive and moving, and safe, he wasn't out there trying to study or find a solution to the broader problems of The Ash Fall. Of the New World.
