Concerned about Kai's obsession and its potential consequences, Oogway ended their friendship. This led to a fierce battle between them, in which Oogway ultimately triumphed by banishing Kai’s body and soul to the Spirit Realm. Kai felt betrayed by Oogway and believed he would never recover from the pain of losing the only person he truly loved.

Five hundred years after his banishment, Kai emerged from the Spirit Realm, transformed by his long-standing resentment and vengefulness. His hair had grown long and unruly, and his once-armored uniform had vanished, leaving him more exposed. During his time in the Spirit Realm, Kai had defeated every Kung Fu master, stealing their chi to gain more power for his eventual return to the Mortal Realm.

When he encountered Oogway again in the Spirit Realm, Kai revealed that he had taken the chi of every master within it, much to Oogway's dismay. Although they were nearly evenly matched, Oogway was ensnared, and his chi was stolen. Before the encounter ended, Oogway warned Kai that he had set another warrior on the path to defeating him. Fueled by his anger, Kai vowed to steal the Dragon Warrior’s chi and subsequently used Oogway’s chi to return to the mortal world.

Kai's hatred for Oogway grew stronger after his return. In a rematch with Oogway in the Spirit Realm, Kai ultimately stole Oogway's chi, allowing him to return to the Mortal Realm as a Spirit Warrior. His desire for vengeance was fixated on destroying Oogway's legacy. Over time, Kai's sense of humor turned dark, and the loyalty and honor he once possessed were replaced by cruelty and aggression. He was obsessed with his legacy, feeling slighted that no one remembered him by his titles, “The Beast of Vengeance” or “Maker of Widows.” This obsession drove him to destroy Oogway's legacy, believing it was akin to the destruction of his own.
