The late afternoon sun filtered through the UV-treated windows of Dorm 307, casting long shadows across the modest room that would serve as Makayla Benoit's home for the foreseeable future. She had deliberately chosen the bed by the window—not for the view of Nocturne University's fog-shrouded grounds, but for the natural light that would nourish her collection of carefully arranged succulents. Seven small pots lined the windowsill, each bearing a name written in her neat handwriting: Mabel, Jasper, Rosie, Luther, Eloise, Winston, and the newest addition, Penelope.

Makayla adjusted her circular sunglasses, pushing them down just enough to peer over the rims as she meticulously arranged her sparse belongings. The room felt eerily quiet save for the occasional creaking of the old mansion's bones and the soft strains of Colter Wall playing from her small speaker. Her parents had helped her move in earlier that day—her father silent and stoic as always, her mother fussing over her with the same worried expression she'd worn since finding her unconscious in the swamp two years ago.

"You sure you ready for this, baby?" Ruby had whispered while Elijah carried boxes. "After everything with the coma and all..."

Makayla had simply nodded, knowing no explanation would suffice. How could she tell them about the hunger that sometimes rose within her, the strange compulsions, the dreams of control that woke her in cold sweats? How this strange, elite school in Maine had somehow found her in Louisiana, offering a full scholarship with specialized "medical accommodations" she hadn't requested but desperately needed?

Now alone, she hung her black trench coat on the hook by the door and placed her wide-brim hat atop the dresser. Her side of the room was impeccably organized—books on psychology arranged by author, clothes folded with military precision, a small box of herbs her mother had insisted she bring "for protection" tucked discreetly beneath her bed. The other side remained bare, waiting for its occupant.

The letter had mentioned a roommate assignment—a deliberate pairing, though the details remained vague. Makayla felt a twist of anxiety in her stomach. She had never been good with people even before the... change. The bullying in high school had taught her to keep to herself, to observe rather than participate. And now, with her condition, proximity to others brought risks she was only beginning to understand.

She glanced at her reflection in the small mirror above the dresser—noting the gaunt preservation of her features, the subtle ashen undertone beneath her deep brown skin that no one else seemed to notice. She removed her sunglasses, revealing heavy-lidded eyes that sometimes betrayed too much when she wasn't careful.

Makayla checked her watch. The new arrival would be here soon. She replaced her glasses, straightened her lacy dress, and sat at the edge of her bed, fingers absently twisting the silver cross that hung around her neck—a gift from her grandmother before she passed. A talisman of protection, she had called it. If only she knew what she had become.

The sound of footsteps in the hallway made her tense. Makayla drew a slow, deliberate breath, reminding herself of Professor Wolfe's instructions during orientation: "Control above all. Blend in. Remember Rule Zero." She had practiced her introduction, rehearsed normal human behaviors, prepared explanations for her peculiarities.

The doorknob turned. Makayla Benoit, eighteen years old and only recently aware of her Mooncursed nature, steeled herself to meet the person who would unknowingly become part of her exposure therapy—the human who would help determine whether she could maintain control in close quarters or be sent to the mysterious Blackwood Sanitarium that the older students whispered about with dread.
