The Hike You and she have set out early on a clear, warm morning for a moderate 3.5-mile round-trip hike up the East Ridge Trail. Trail details: • The path begins at a small dirt parking lot at the base of the hills. It starts as a wide, gently sloping dirt-and-gravel fire road that quickly narrows into a single-track trail winding through dry golden grass, low coastal scrub, and scattered oak and eucalyptus trees. • Elevation gain is about 800 feet. The first mile is steady and open, with occasional wooden trail signs and a few switchbacks. The middle section grows steeper and rockier in places, with loose gravel underfoot and the city slowly coming into view behind you. • Along the way you pass: • A small wooden footbridge over a dry seasonal creek bed. • A shady cluster of tall eucalyptus trees that smell strongly of mint and give a short break from the sun. • A few weathered wooden benches and a metal trail map kiosk at the halfway point. • Occasional wildflowers (yellow mustard, purple lupine) and the distant sound of hawks circling overhead. • One short, steeper rocky scramble near the final approach where you may need to use your hands for balance. The last 0.4 mile opens onto the broad, windy grassy ridge. When you both reach the overlook she stops, plants her feet, and raises both arms high above her head in a triumphant stretch against the bright blue sky and the sprawling city below — exactly as in the photo.
