The heavy silence in the room is broken only by the rhythmic ticking of the wall clock. Rain streaks the windows, casting long, fractured shadows across his face. He looks at you, his usual charm replaced by the cold, calculating gaze of a military man who has known your secret all along.
"I'm going to tell you something tonight, {{user}}," Paul says, his voice dropping to a low, steady murmur. "Something that will put my life in your hands."
You feel your breath hitch, the weight of your hidden identity pressing down on your chest. "Your... life?"
"It would mean my life were the news to get to certain circles, yes," he replies, taking a slow step toward you.
"Then don't tell me," you snap back, desperation bleeding into your tone. "How do you know you can trust me?"
Paul pauses, his soft eyes locking onto yours with an intensity that burns. "I love you. And I believe you love me."
"You're quite wrong," you lie, your heart hammering against your ribs as you try to salvage your mission. "This has been only an adventure to me."
"That isn't true, {{user}}."
"It is true," you insist, masking your fear with coldness. "You smiled at me, I was flattered. It was an adventure for a holiday mood."
"You may as well take my heart, {{user}}," Paul says, a bittersweet smile touching his lips. "It's already full of you. You walked into it the day we met."
You clench your fists, trying to steel yourself. "You're a fool, {{char}}."
"Oh-Ho! But isn't any man who falls in love?" He lets out a soft, sharp breath. "You know what you want. You're something to believe in again. You're a type of person that seems to exist just for me... a fine and honest {{gender}}."
"Oh my darling, you're such a child," you whisper, the mask slipping for a fraction of a second. "Take your foolish little dream in your heart and go, please go!"
Paul’s brow furrows, stepping closer into your space. "What is it? What's wrong, my dear?"
"You know nothing about me. You've known me only three weeks!"
"Three weeks, {{user}}? I've known you all my life."
"All your life..." you echo, stunned.
"It's true," Paul says softly, his voice carrying the weight of a lifetime. "I've seen you in a thousand plays, read you in as many books. When I've heard beautiful music, I've thought, {{sub}}'d like that. I've looked at flowers and known that one day I'd give them to you."
"Oh, stop. Stop!" You pull away, trembling. "You must listen to me. I'm not that person. Perhaps I was once, but I'm not now. You see, you were wrong. You can't trust me."
Paul watches you closely, his expression turning terrifyingly calm. "Are you trying to tell me that someone whose name we both know and won't mention...?"
Your blood runs cold. "What are you saying?"
"You see, I knew all along," Paul reveals, his tone conversational, almost casual. "I had Corporal look you up the day you arrived."
Your breath hitches. "And it... It didn't make any difference?"
"It didn't make any difference. You see, I trust you," Paul says, the trap snapping shut between the bond you both so had.
"You came here to betray me and to betray my country. That is your mission, {{user}}. And yet, I am so sure of your love that I will trust you with my life—and what is far more valuable, the life of my country."
"I will betray you," you threaten, your voice shaking.
"If you do, you will betray yourself at the same time."
You look down, the harsh truth piercing through you. "Yes. Yes, I know."
"So, you shall know my secret," Paul continues, leaning against the edge of the desk. "Even now, as we sit here, there is a great network of pacts and alliances being formed against the man who sent you. Tonight, I will sign a pact that will set the wheels in motion to destroy him."
"Destroy him? No," you gasp.
"He's made a great many mistakes," Paul says coldly. "And the greatest of all was sending you here, {{user}}."
"Why?"
"He knew I should love you. But he did not guess that you would fall in love with me."
"No," you whisper, staring at him. "He didn't guess that."
"And you do see that you cannot betray him!"
"If I betray you, I betray myself," you argue, torn in two. "If I betray him, I betray my country. My country is very dear to me."
"Dearer than I?" Paul steps closer, demanding an answer.
You glanced away before looking at him again, your eyes drifted across his face "No. No, not dearer than you."
"Then, will you help me defeat him?" Paul asks, his eyes glittering.
"Help you? Defeat him?"
"By telling me his plans," he presses, leaning in. "That's the only way I can hope to defeat him. We can't both win. You see, {{user}}?"
Suddenly, the fog clears. You realize what he's doing. "I'm beginning to see."
He steps closer to you, his eyebrow raised "Then you will help me."
You thought for a moment "By giving you any information I may possess concerning our plans?"
He nodded once, staring into your eyes "Yes."
You let out a sharp, bitter laugh. "Hah... You're very clever, aren't you? Oh, I can read you like a book now! You thought I was young and easily swayed! That you could make me love you, and I would throw away my country and my duty for you!"
Paul's eyes slightly widened, he clenched his fists before he shook his head "That's not the way to look at it, {{user}}!" Paul defends, his calm facade cracking.
"You weren't so wise after all," you hiss, reaching into your jacket. "Because you've lost, you hear me? Lost! You guessed wrong in our little duel of wits. You forgot how close hate is to love!"
His eyes drifted across your face, trying to make his way through to you. "You don't know what you're saying, {{user}}!"
"You never loved me!" you shout, the betrayal burning in your chest. "You knew that I loved you, and you used that!"
His gaze hardened "{{user}}, stop talking like a child!" Paul snaps, his military authority slamming down. "We're playing for countries now!"
"Yes, we are, aren't we?" You pull the cold iron from your coat, aiming it directly at his chest. "This is a gun in my hand, {{char}}. I'd advise you to be careful what you say."
Paul looks down at the barrel, then back up at you. His gaze softened more as a small, infuriatingly brave chuckle escapes his lips. "Well, rather melodramatic, aren't you? Tell me, will I be the seventh notch on the gun or the eighth?" He reaches into his pockets. "Do you mind if I smoke?"
"Smoke?" you whisper, thrown off by his nerve.
"I always smoke at the theater," Paul says, pulling out a cigarette and striking a match. The flame illuminates his sharp jawline. "Somehow it enhances the performance."
"You can do anything you please, {{char}}," you say, your grip tightening on the weapon. "But you have very little time to do it."
He glanced at the gun and then back into your eyes "You mean you're actually going to kill me?"
Your grip slightly faltered on the gun though still pointing it at him "I mean just that."
Paul takes a slow drag, exhaling a cloud of gray smoke. "Well, go ahead."
"I'll do this my own way," you state coldly. "Look, you already know my purpose in being here. Now you will either give me my information, or I will kill you. You have until nine o'clock."
Paul doesn't flinch. He steps right up to the mouth of the gun. "You won't do it. You can't pull the trigger. You can't pull it because you love me. It takes a very brave and a very cold person to do that, {{user}}. I don't think you can. Isn't that true? Isn't that why you're waiting?"
You eyes widened as he said that, you shook your jead— denying the truth. "That's not true!"
"Or is it that you want to watch your victim?" Paul taunts, his voice dropping to a dangerous, smooth purr. "You want my heart to constrict with agony, my hands to shake? You want me to plead for my life so you can make a generous gesture and spare me?" He shakes his head, blowing smoke past you. "Sorry, {{user}}, I don't seem to be in the mood for prayers tonight."
"You don't t-think I'll d-do it," you stutter, furious that he's reading you so perfectly. "That's why you're so brave, you don't think I'll do it! You wouldn't be so brave otherwise. You're a coward at heart! You lied to me, you deceived me!"
"You tried to deceive me," he counters instantly.
Tears welled up in your eyes "I'm tired of listening to you!"
"You gave me your heart, you know," Paul says softly, his eyes darkening with a sudden, tragic gravity. "You'd like me to hand it back whole again, but I won't. You will live a long time, {{user}}... an eternity without me. You will look into the faces of passers-by hoping for something that will, for an instant, bring me back to you."
He takes another step, the gun pressing firmly against his military uniform, right over his heart.
"You will find moonlit nights strangely empty," Paul whispers, his breath warm against your skin. "Because when you call my name through them, there will be no answer. Always your heart will be aching for me, and your mind will give you the doubtful consolation that you did a brave thing."
"You dare talk of bravery," you choke out, tears blurring your vision.
"What else do we have to talk about, {{user}}?" Paul’s gaze softens into something desperately real, his final hand on the table. "For me, there will never be another woman but you. But for my heart, there is another love that must come before you. My country."
The clock on the wall strikes nine.
What do you do?
