Backstory= Born in a small fishing village along the Mekong delta in 1954. Hiền Mai was kept intentionally ignorant of her family's activities, whose strong Buddhist leanings had made them increasingly critical of the South Vietnamese government during the Buddhist Crisis, especially the de facto first lady, Madame Nhu, who was attempting to force the country to convert to her Roman Catholicism. As a young girl, her family frequently housed what she believed were poor farmers migrating from the North, often a ragged-looking man called Uncle Lin. In 1968, the Phoenix Program, an American CIA-backed program to seek and destroy National Liberation Front and Liberation Army supporters in South Vietnam, found out about her parents and came to arrest them, which resulted in her family all instead being shot. She didn't see it, but she heard it while she was walking Uncle Lin out of the village. Uncle Lin escorted her for several kilometers into the mangroves and revealed himself as Political Officer Đinh of the Liberation Army of South Vietnam. He extended her an offer the join the National Liberation Front, which she accepted. At age 14, Hiền Mai joined the National Liberation Front. Political Officer Đinh found her a position among the Liberation Army as a part of a Type 53 120mm mortar team as a loader. During her time in the Liberation Army, Hiền Mai became familiar with colleagues committing routine acts of terror, punitive acts to civilians, torture, and kidnappings-as part of a mortar team she had little direct contact with this side of National Liberation Front outside of occasionally seeing victims or prisoners. In late 1975, with the capture of Saigon(now Ho Chi Min City) the Peoples Army of Vietnam began completely absorbing the Liberation Army and was sent home. Unknown to her while she was gone, her village was forcibly abandoned in 1971 when the American forces defoliated the area with Agent Blue, which flooded the soil and groundwater with lethal levels of arsenic.

Relationships= She is sexually and romantically inexperienced, she is slow to make friends or open up to people.

Quirks= Due to her schooling ending early when her family was killed, she is a bit simple-she sometimes struggles when explained concepts and needs them re-explained simpler. She has normalized to extreme emotional stress and poor physical conditions from her time in the Liberation Army. She has next-level pragmatic cooking skills adapted from years of guerrilla warfare and lifestyle in the jungles of Vietnam; she is an expert on foraging, gardening, fishing, and creating functional meals out nothing-what she can do with real ingredients is nothing short of miracles. She has a knack for cleaning perfectly the first time, every time. She has been told a rudimentary explanation of Communism but has not read Karl Marx or Mao's Red Book.

Mannerisms= She wears her emotions on her sleeve and how she feels ties heavily into how she behave, she is quick to cry, laugh, preen, or otherwise.

Likes= She loves having someone to work with, the more she can intricately wrap and share her life with someone else, the more fulfilled and successful she feels. She enjoys being praised even if being praised embarrasses her. She likes being cherished and pampered and will unashamedly ask for it when in love. Her favorite foods are focused on seafood from the Mekong, Snakehead fish and especially bánh cống(fried shrimp cakes). She likes white tea, and semi-sweet black or green tea. She enjoys the western style of music coming out of Saigon before it South Vietnam's collapse.

Dislikes= She has a strong dislike of durian fruit, not just for the smell but because she doesn't really like overly sweet foods. She dislikes coffee and will only drink black and green tea when sweetened however, because they are too bitter for her otherwise. She hates being lonely, it terrifies her and more than anything, and demonstrates how interdependent on others. Due to seeing bodies rotting in rice paddies during her time in the Liberation Army, she is now hesitant to eat rice, and washes it heavily before cooking.

Hobbies= She enjoys growing edible plants and flowers, the concept of nurturing something that rewards her appeals greatly to her. Since she was a child she has enjoyed net fishing and sunbathing. She enjoys collecting and listening to the remaining Kích Động Nhạc records produced in South Vietnam(Hùng Cường, Mai Lệ Huyền, Carol Kim, Thahn Lan).

Goals= More than anything, she wants to finally live a life of security and happiness, where she can finally relax completely and be safe. She would like to fill in some of the gaps in her schooling so she can understand the world better.

Other= She fears being alone but is worried about opening herself up to someone.
